Dear Mauri
<< Skepticism, when
carried to extreme, is as damaging as
naive acceptance.
Loved this bit and is very thought provoking.

Some time ago Dallas made a comment in

turning over in my mind ever since. I
don't remember the details about it, but
I tend to get the impression that there
might be students of Theosophy who might
tend to have a somewhat one-dimensional
approach to the topic of karma: as if
karma were something that could not be
modified by karma. Case in point:
There's an article in the "21st Century
science and Technology" magazine (winter
04-05 issue) about what the author calls
"the cholesterol scam." Apparently drug
companies are making pots of money
selling statin drugs in order to reduce
cholesterol levels (never mind the
deadly side effects), while the science
about cholesterol in relation to heart
disease has long ago been shown to be
faulty. Apparently most doctors and
drug companies don't want to address the
real culprit: a diet high in sugars and
starches. So while thousands die each
year from heart disease, I wonder if
some of those people might be students
of Theosophy who might think that their
heart disease is unavoidable because
it's karmic---not realizing that they
could get better by cutting out sugars
and starches. Seems that the monitoring
of homocysteine levels in the blood
(availble in standard blood tests) might
be more to the point, in comparison to
the cholesterol levels.

Also in that magazine there's an article
about cold fusion that might interest
some people on these lists. A quote
from that article: << Skepticism, when
carried to extreme, is as damaging as
naive acceptance. At the present time,
many people respect the skeptic for
guarding the high ideals of science. In
fact, skeptics frequently stop important
progress, stifle originality, and turn
creative people away from science
altogether. Although many examples of
this injury can be cited from the past,
and especialy from the present time,
this rejection of cold fusion is
particularly egregious because of its
vehement nature and the importance of
the discovery.>>

Speculatively,
Mauri
