Dear Doss:

All you say (below) is correct and a statement of fact.

All the dust is being shaken out of the old carpets. It will do good to let
things become open and known.

It is important to know that THEOSOPHY is not the THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY and
that the philosophy and science enshrined in THEOSOPHY has the broadest
possible airing.

May I send you (you may already know this) what I passed on to others?

Best wishes as always,

Dallas

I would like you to review this and see if it is helpful .

=============================
I write this as a long-time associate of U L T, so please excuse me if it
seems repetitive.

In my opinion each Lodge [T S, U L T, etc...] ought to employ the
freedom within the rules they have accepted, to study as they please.

The presentation of THEOSOPHY was not designed to restrict, but to give
freedom. But freedom ought not to infringe on the "freedom" of others. It
has to be appropriate and truly fraternal.

Yet, no one ought to impose an opinionated view on others, or invade and
detract from some period of time already set up for some definite line of
study.

Consider these ideas and see if they are of use:

I offer this lengthy survey as an example of the approach developed in one
of the study centers. I am of the opinion that it can be applied anywhere.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

derived from the U L T DECLARATION

======================

ULT Declaration: What does it say ?

Curriculum:	To spread broadcast the Teachings of
Theosophy as recorded in the writings of
H. P. Blavatsky and Wm. Q. Judge.

U. L. T. : DECLARATION -- Principles & Policies

[ Sole basis for all ULT activities ]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------

UNITED LODGE OF THEOSOPHISTS

DECLARATION:

The policy of this Lodge is independent devotion to the cause of Theosophy,
without professing attachment to any Theosophical organization. It is loyal
to the great Founders of the Theosophical Movement, but does not concern
itself with dissensions or differences of individual opinion.

The work it has on hand and the end it keeps in view are too absorbing and
too lofty to leave it the time or inclination to take part in side issues.
That work and that end is the dissemination of the Fundamental Principles of
the Philosophy of Theosophy, and the exemplification in practice of those
principles, through a truer realization of the SELF; a profounder conviction
of Universal Brotherhood.

It holds that the unassailable basis for union among Theosophists, wherever
and however situated, is "similarity of aim, purpose and teaching," and
therefore has neither Constitution, By-Laws nor Officers, the sole bond
between its Associates being that basis. And it aims to disseminate this
idea among Theosophists in the furtherance of Unity.

It regards as Theosophists all who are engaged in the true service of
Humanity, without distinction of race, creed, sex, condition or
organization, and

It welcomes to its Association all those who are in accord with its declared
purposes and who desire to fit themselves, by study and otherwise, to be the
better able to help and teach others.

"The true Theosophist belongs to no cult or sect, yet belongs to each and
all."

-----------------------------------------------

The following is the form signed by Associates of the United Lodge of
Theosophists:

Being in sympathy with the purposes of this Lodge, as set forth in its
"Declaration," I hereby record my desire to be enrolled as an Associate, it
being understood that such association calls for no obligation on my part,
other than that which 1, myself, determine.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------

The United Lodge of Theosophists holds the position that Theosophy is not "a
religion."

It is a method of looking at the composition of the living Universe, and of
describing the Laws seen to be working in it.

The word theosophy has been traced back to Pythagoras. It signifies in
Greek: "the wisdom of the gods."

As a system it originated in antiquity. The oldest evidence of its presence
can be traced to pre-Vedic India. It is the oldest system of recording
knowledge and history, independent of any language, culture or person. [ see
S D Vol. I, pp 272-3 ]

Mme. H. P. Blavatsky was the latest exponent of Theosophy. Mr. W. Q. Judge
was her trusted colleague. Both contributed to the original literature of
modern Theosophy through their writings. HPB propounded the principles;
Mr. Judge explained their practice.

Theosophy groups knowledge, under philosophy, science and religion--as
facts. It offers a coherent synthesis, uniting these into one because it
offers no shelter to opinions.

The United Lodge of Theosophists is an association of students of Theosophy.
It has no "leaders," "members," nor any of the trappings of an
"organization." It was started in 1909 by a pupil of both Mme. Blavatsky
and Mr. Judge.

Its "Declaration" is framed from phrases they used in their writings, and is
designed to eliminate any form of personal authority, or "politics."

It places each associate or student on his own responsibility, as a free,
independent and self-determining entity; and invites him to formulate his
own program of study. It makes no demands on anyone. It establishes no
common rules of personal conduct.

It invites each associate to collaborate with the rest. This "Declaration"
is the uniting document for all ULTers.

It is the inner attitude that counts, and the effort. The external body or
group one might join gives the advantage of consultation. It would appear
to be wise to affiliate oneself to such a body as gives the most clear and
correct insight on Theosophy and the purposes of the Masters for humanity
through the Theosophical Movement.

U L T ITS WORK AND METHODS

ULT offers exact and clear texts, copied or reproduced photographically from
the originals. Its work and discussions are based on those alone. It
avoids "side-issues" and organizational procedures. It is solely devoted to
the study and application of Theosophy.

Many of those in the old "Adyar" T.S. have not had the benefit of many years
of reading and studying the work of Wm. Q. Judge. They were "cut off" from
him by the decisions (made for them !) by the early "officers" of that group
about 100 years ago. The work of Mr. Judge for the Theosophical Movement
should be judged by what he wrote.

VALUE OF STUDYING HPB AND WQJ THEOSOPHY

Mr. Judge's book LETTERS THAT HAVE HELPED ME does contain some valuable
advice. His EPITOME OF THEOSOPHY is invaluable as a guide to "leading the
higher life." ECHOES FROM THE ORIENT and THE OCEAN OF THEOSOPHY present the
Theosophy of the SECRET DOCTRINE in simple, everyman's language. They are
written with him in mind and offer Theosophical philosophy and doctrine in
brevity, without losing any of their depth.

"No one was ever converted to Theosophy. Each one who really comes into it
does so because it is only "an extension of previous beliefs."...we are all
different, and some similar...through Brotherhood we receive the knowledge
of others, which we consider until (if it fits us) it is ours..."
WQJ LETTERS, p. 20

Each one of us makes by his use of Theosophy a powerful tool for
self-reform.

Each Human and Each Being is an Immortal Monad

At the core of each of us is a portion of the Divine Universal SPIRIT. It
is called by HPB the Monad. It is a triad consisting of Spirit (Atma),
Wisdom (Buddhi) and Mind (Manas). This triad is undying, eternal and is
called "the eternal Pilgrim. This is why "Brotherhood" has been so
powerfully emphasized. HPB called it "The One esoteric Truth." [ See
MAHATMA LETTERS THAT HAVE HELPED ME - Judge, (Barker) p. 32 on our duty to
"orphan Humanity"]

Our work, as "embodied spirits," is the raising of our vesture of matter and
our personality, up to the level of Universal Spiritual self-consciousness
which the Monad [ATMA-BUDDHI] represents.

In so doing we recognize the co-existence of all beings around us. They are
seen to be embodiments of an identical Spark of Spiritual nature, each
working on its own line of advancement, all, assisting each other. Those
elements (jivas-"life-atoms") that presently constitute our personality, are
those which we have the closest magnetic ties with. They have been placed
by Nature in our charge, and they constitute the "army" of our many "younger
brothers."

Each of these is a potential man of the distant future. We are all
voluntary "teachers," this is the mission which our "Monad" has assumed
aeons ago [see SD II 79-80, 109-110, I 570-5, 170-1fn, 207-210]. It
"renounced Nirvana" for this purpose. But, now from time to time, as in the
distant past, manvantaras ago, we (our present embodied mind), accesses from
time to time a vision, a view, so to say, of the Monadic state, vision and
condition. This is why we intuit the existence of a subtle relationship
with that BEING, which at that time, served as the Teacher, and now
continues to serve us as an example of what can be done through self-effort.
HPB offers a suggestive passage in the pages of Vol. 1 of THE SECRET
DOCTRINE: 207- 210 and 570-575.

WORKING THEOSOPHICALLY

Anyone who is doing good and independent work for Theosophy as best as they
are able, should be respected. This is one of the signs that Theosophy is
being applied. It is an effort to help humanity progress.

It is not the "label" that matters, but the motive and the effort made for
the benefit of others who are coming along the paths that have been found to
be valuable. In the line of true esotericism it is always the ethics, the
morality of the motive and the effort that counts for our rise or fall.

SELF-MADE PROGRESS AND INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY

We are always the builders or the destroyers of our own "fate." Each man
makes himself. And in so doing he helps or hinders humanity. We are always
safer, if we are not sure of our motive, if we devote our time and energies
to assisting mankind.

We must assume that we are all immortals on a long journey together, some
times closer to each other in space, than at others, and thus we rejoice at
each others' successes, and are always ready to hold out a hand in
friendship and recognition to anyone who asks or responds.

THEOSOPHY AND MODERN SCIENCE AND THINKING

Everyone drawn to the circle of work for Theosophy has "found" it for
himself.

Following, without resolute and independent study or thinking, is as
dangerous in such a case, as blindly following any "religion," or, accepting
the theories of Science as though they were facts.

Anyone who reads and studies Theosophy should be able to do away with most
of the nonsense that passes for "religion," and substitute a logical and
ethical basis for life's decisions. If the ideas given above are true then
we have a great program spread before us of joyful and soul-satisfying work.

Considering the "Theosophical field" of these days, one finds diverging
exponents who have adopted some Theosophical doctrines and minimized or
rejected others. It is fruitless to try, without great personal exertion
and study, to chose among those who make claims to "theosophical authority"
and "progressiveness" -- which on careful analysis, does not hold up to the
ideals that HPB's Theosophy embodies, and to common sense.

In the ULT Declaration these are termed "side-issues." Since they do not
relate to the learning of theosophical doctrines or their direct
application, they are avoided. To determine what is valuable, one has to
acquire the necessary measuring devices.

Theosophy offers those which have been tested over aeons of time and
universally proven to be accurate. It is our task to verify these ideas and
doctrines again, for ourselves [see SD I 272-276]. We are not asked to
"accept on faith," any proposition advanced. Theosophy can be termed the
ecology of the ages, as it deals with all aspects of Nature and learning.

There are many friends, companions and co-students, who have had the
opportunity to study Theosophy, but who, for whatever personal reasons, did
not find that it suited them, or their temperament in this life. They have
chosen to follow other ways. Who can blame them?

We can only hope that in due course, they will find out the value of this
philosophy and start to use it in the future (assuming that they need to do
so, and are not already doing it well in their own way, and at a level which
is suitable to their progress towards our common goal).

Theosophy is an expression of the facts of Nature and of Universal Truth,
whatever it is called, it will eventually be used as the basis for progress
by all. The only advantage that our Karma has given us this life, is that
we have come into contact with it early. It is not an advantage that should
be lost.

STUDYING THEOSOPHY OR ANY SYSTEM

If we are going to trust any system, or any one else, it is well to go into
such matters with all one's awareness. The universal and impersonal logic,
principles and ideals that Theosophy exposes are the main points of
attraction. Its practical application is always obvious.

If one naturally enjoys the dynamism of philosophy, and seeks for that
knowledge which unites all aspects of living, and makes, over-all, great
sense; which, does not demand unfair or unusual restrictions of our mind,
then Theosophy should be considered. At all times one should maintain the
attitude of being a "tester." One should take the various facets of its
doctrines, and pit them against all others, and, use our own common-sense
and reason. This is the best way to grow.

VALUE OF IMPERSONALITY

For a true student, it is always better to be associated with a group that
is focused on principles, and not on personalities who fill "positions" or
"posts," whether elective or otherwise. And above all, personally not to
expect or exact any "authority" of any kind.

The most that anyone of us can do is to pass on, unaltered, the great
teachings we have received the use of. The idea of being "independently
united" should have strong appeal. Principles are superior to "people."

T S ORIGINS AND THEOSOPHY

While Col. Olcott stood for the "T S" as it was originally organized, if you
study HPB's one-pointed attitude, she was always for THEOSOPHY. HPB, who
represented the Masters -- the true Founders of the T.S., went on record as
to her own position of independence in 1888, 13 years after the T S was
started.

In a memorable letter: "A Puzzle from Adyar" [ Lucifer, Aug. 1889; p. 217]
she makes clear her position. Also, in a letter written in April 1890: "Why
I do not Return to India" - published in Theosophist, January 1922, this is
reinforced.

THEOSOPHICAL ORGANIZATIONS

There is an enormous difference between Theosophy, and any Theosophical
organization.

No organization rises above the common denominator of its membership. The
only value of such a group to the individual student, therefore, is the
facility of placing one's results and conclusions before other minds, which
may or may not agree, or may even help to readjust our personal conclusions.
The freer and the least bound by outward regulations these things are, the
better.

"POLITICS"

Someone, (Tom Paine ?) said that the best government was "No government."
This can be seen that this would work in a society where idealism was made
uniformly practical. To spend much time and paper on elections, and such,
is time lost from theosophical work. It has no permanent or continuing
value. There is always work for those who want to work. A title or a
certificate has no value except to one's personal vanity. As actual
immortals, we have no use for that.

If we are, in this life-time to apprehend Theosophy to a wider and deeper
extent, then, the more time we devote to serious study and practical work,
in and around our area of life, where Karmic attraction locates us, the
better.

That is the kind of encouragement one may get from studying the Theosophy
that HPB and WQJ gave their lives to spread. It is not that one places
their sayings on some pedestal, but each student has to analyze them to see
if they embody more clearly those morals and ideals that THEOSOPHY
represents as a living and continuous system -- which has been in existence
since man first became a thinking, self-conscious being.

NO AUTHORITIES, LEADERS, OR POLITICS

The structure of the ULT was intended to remove any "authority" pressures
that might gather around an "organization," or any individual or
individuals.

Consulting the writings of HPB and Mr. Judge it was found that there were
phrases that could be used to define an "association" of volunteer students
who would collaborate independently for joint work in study, promulgation,
and the maintaining in-print of the original teachings.

In addition, the effort to promulgate Theosophy in its original form would
be sustained and continued. This is a practical brotherhood.

In ULT each associate is encouraged to give such brotherly help to others,
as they may see is needed. No one is deemed competent to criticize or
direct another in his study or work. However the spirit of consultation is
that which has been adopted as a basis for adjusting mutual duties and
common responsibilities. Consensus on principles is always striven for, to
achieve harmonious growth and action. Association implies equality of
responsibility. Membership would imply subordination to "officers,"
"rules," and "bye-laws." These are all carefully avoided in ULT. This is a
strong, not a fragile or brittle bond of unity.

Currently, 8 Lodges in the USA, and 17 abroad, together with 32 "Study
Groups" are known to be working. There are also hundreds of associates who
are "at-large," so to say, living in remote areas where there is no near-by
Lodge or Study Group.

THEOSOPHY AND NEO-THEOSOPHY

If one compares "HPB Theosophy" with the writings of later students one may
find important differences. These can be confusing.

For this reason ULT, as a matter of policy limited itself, in its educative
work, to the careful and diligent study of the writings of HPB, and Mr.
Judge, to the extent that his writings are in agreement with Hers. A
diligent student will soon notice that her writings are consistent and
coherent from first to last.

U L T ASSOCIATION AND ASSOCIATES

The only formality in associating oneself with the ULT is the signing of the
"Yellow Associate Card" -- which in effect, enfranchises the signer, making
him solely responsible to himself for his own work and decisions, but also
assuring him that there are others in the world who are of like mind and
purpose.

Such signing does not sever him from earlier or other affiliations in any
way, but serves to stimulate in him a sense of that duty of which he is the
sole monitor and recorder. It is the duty of diligent study and
verification of Theosophy, and then, the passing on of the enthusiasm and
the knowledge which has enlightened his life, to others.

THEOSOPHICAL LODGES AND STUDY GROUPS

The formation of any "Theosophical study group" should proceed with what is
constructive.

It is always well to seek to draw in others, rather than exclude, compete or
distance ones' self from others doing similar work --unless the
incompatibility is insurmountable. There is to be found in LIGHT ON THE
PATH, p. 4, a remarkable sentence, which in a way could epitomize the best
attitude for any of us student/disciples: "And that power the disciple
shall covet which shall make appear as nothing in the eyes of men."

POSITION OF H. P. BLAVATSKY

In 1991 there was the publication of a definitive biography of HPB by Sylvia
Cranston - Tarcher/Putnam, New York ? If one reads it, it will be found to
answer all the slanders and innuendoes against her with actual quotations
and references to facts and to written evidence.

There is no question that all students of modern-day Theosophy derive their
knowledge from Mme. Blavatsky's writings. In the course of time several
writers, claiming knowledge, position or authority have written their
versions of what they think she meant. Those writings may reflect their
opinions and need to be compared with original Theosophy.

For the independent student it is always better to go direct to Mme.
Blavatsky without letting anyone intervene or discourage such a move. The
student can then read for himself and form his own opinion concerning the
nature of Theosophy, as she presented from the Masters.

FOCUSING THEOSOPHY AN INDIVIDUAL MATTER

All these are ideas that tend to encourage the individual student to join
with others of similar interest. Mr. Judge in one place suggests that each
should constitute himself into a "Center," a "whirling center of light and
energy" which will shed the power of theosophical living on others.

PURPOSE OF THE U L T

ULT in Los Angeles has issued several papers to assist in making study and
organization easier. To this end, the magazine THEOSOPHY is regularly
issued and verbatim or photographic copies of the original textual
presentations made by HPB and WQJ are kept in print. The focus is the study
of original and pure Theosophy. It promotes as the most useful texts the
original writings of Mme. H.P.Blavatsky, and those of her friend and
collaborator Mr. Wm. Q. Judge.

TO SPREAD BROADCAST THE TEACHINGS OF H P B AND W Q J

The ULT is dedicated: "To spread broadcast the teachings of Theosophy as
recorded in the writings of H. P. Blavatsky and William Q. Judge." Students
are thus put into a direct relationship with those two through their
unadulterated original writings. The first edition of their books has
usually been reproduced photographically for students . Their articles are
carefully transcribed from the original magazine printings.

U. L. T. -- ITS BASIS AND WORK

The United Lodge of Theosophists is not a religious body. It advocates no
creed or dogma. It was established in 1909 by a group of students in Los
Angeles.

It suggests no individual discipline other than that of each dealing with
all men as brothers, and studying his own nature and potentials. [ The
"Golden Rule." ]

It advocates the study of Theosophy. Theosophy is a philosophy, a method of
understanding and using the faculties of the mind in grasping the scientific
aspect, and the facts of Life already present in Nature.

It recommends the practice of universal brotherhood as the only fair basis
for living with all other beings in living, vibrant Nature, which it
conceives to be already united (religiere) into a harmonious, intelligent
and cooperative whole. Nothing in Nature is considered to be unimportant.
It is the adjusting of each individual, through his own understanding, to
the responsibilities and duties that are naturally his own.

It recommends the impartial study of all religions, philosophies and
sciences, and of their history. But promotes none of those.

It promotes the most eclectic approach to the study and application of the
truths to be found basic in education, the condition of Man in Nature, in
literature, history, and in the philosophies and sciences.

It seeks for excellence in describing these facts so that they can be better
understood.

No restrictions are placed on any one who desires to become an "associate"
of ULT. Volunteerism lies at the heart of its nature.

It has no dogmas, and requires no beliefs, disciplines or accounting for
their views or way of living from its associates.

No "membership drives" are launched or entertained.

The promulgation of the fundamental principles of Theosophy and their use in
individual life is recommended to all.

There are universal truths and facts, and they are not limited to, or by,
Theosophy. ULT is one of the several institutions in the world that
advocates and seeks to exemplify these principles. If one reads the SECRET
DOCTRINE, Vol. I, pp. 272-3, one will secure a view of the scope and
antiquity of Theosophy.

DECLARATION OF U. L. T. POLICY

The "Declaration of the ULT" recognizes as Theosophists all those who are in
accord with and practice brotherhood. Therefore all ULT Lodges and meetings
are open to the public and no questions are asked. Freedom to come and go,
is practiced there.

The "Declaration of the ULT" is the sole document to which an associate
gives consideration. If anyone desires to become associated with the ULT he
is asked to read and think about its implications, and then sign an
"Associate Card." On this Card is the following freedom clause: "Being in
sympathy with the purposes of this Lodge, as set forth in its "Declaration,"
I hereby record my desire to be enrolled as an Associate, it being
understood that such association calls for no obligation on my part other
than that which I myself determine."

ULT Lodges and ULT Study Groups are dedicated to mutual assistance in the
study of Theosophy.

WORK FOR PROMULGATION

Information concerning Theosophical philosophy and methods of application,
are the responsibility of associates.

No one method of study or of promulgation is deemed to be superior to
another.

Each Lodge, and every associate may share their experience and conclusions
with others or seek assistance from those with more experience. But no one
may impose their opinions on any one else.

The ULT Lodges and Study Classes are groups of students, whether
"associates," or not, (as they are open to the public and all are welcome)
who desire to study the original teachings of Theosophy together.

IN RECAPITULATION,

U.L.T. is set up so that there is:

1.	Leader (s)	None.

All associates have an equal say in matters of practical operation. The
Declaration defines the sole basis for association. The "conference method"
is invariably employed in decision making. The study and the application in
practice of the Declaration, and the Fundamental Principles of Theosophy are
regarded as most valuable work of the ULT, since those are considered the
natural unfoldment of the knowledge and wisdom which are innate to the
Higher Ego (the Higher Manas) in each one; but, it is always understood
that these are developed individually as virtues, to various levels by each
student for himself. No one in ULT is considered as a "Teacher." We are
all "pupil-teachers."

2.	Governing Bodies	None. (see above)

3.	Membership Qualifications	None.

All individual responsibility is self-assumed and individual cooperation is
offered to ULT Lodges or Study Groups, or to other associates. No
excommunication is possible. No authoritarianism is accepted.

No "Organizational Trappings, Rules, or Regulations"

It was determined that no restrictions ought to be attached to this effort.
No restrictive, formal or authoritarian structures, no organizational
framework, was to be established other than such as might be required for
the handling of legal matters, and that, if necessary would be a separate
organism with no authority over the work of the ULT or any of its
associates. The ULT has "associates," not "members."

The "associates" have the responsibility of forwarding the work of the ULT
under the program outlined by the Declaration. Since they are volunteers,
they have to ask to take part in the work, and offer such expertise as is
theirs. They cannot be asked or coerced into certain tasks.

CONFERENCE AND CONSULTATION

In all cases, associates have to determine for themselves, by consultation
and consensus, what they will do individually, or jointly contribute in
sustaining this effort. The independence and autonomy of the individual was
to be assured as the prime factor that would avoid any "authority" in this
work. The criteria for the evaluation of any proposal was to be sought in
such original writings as might be available, or in the record of analogous
precedents used by HPB or WQJ, and in the collaboration of such others as
might endorse any proposal for work that was made.

The collaboration and devotion thus evoked has enabled this particular
aspect of the great Theosophical Movement to continue vigorously and in a
sustained manner. It has gradually been adopted in other centers, each
autonomous, but fraternally affiliated with each other on the basis of the
"Declaration."

THE UNIVERSE IS AN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION

The potential of perfecting one's knowledge, powers and abilities is sensed
universally by every human. The Universe may be likened to a vast "school"
where those who have "graduated" now serve us, and we in turn, who are
learning as instructors, pass on the knowledge as pure as possible, to those
who follow us in time.

The concept of there being individuals who have graduated, so to say, from
this School of Life, those we designate: Masters of Wisdom, Elder Brothers,
Sages and Adepts is common to all ages and cultures. Theosophy points to
this as testimony that this is an actual fact in Nature, and that we, may
also aspire to that elevated status after due study and apprenticeship in
the art of living--to which, Theosophy is the key.

INDIVIDUAL DUTIES AND WORK

Duties:	Under the spirit of conduct which the "Declaration," advocates, all
duties are self-defined and self-applied by individual associates.
Independence and cooperation are the principles applied in practice. The
work that is done for the Lodge is done by those who volunteers and who
determine in conference what, how and who will assume the necessary
responsibilities for all aspects of Lodge work.

An associate of the U.L.T. could be said to endeavor to pursue the three
objects of the age-old Theosophical Movement to the extent that he is able
or that he chooses.

Believing that he is an immortal SELF within his own being, brotherhood and
tolerance is the obvious way of living.

Seeing that the laws of Nature operate everywhere, and are fair, just and
impartial, he seeks to balance his past karma and to avoid creating adverse
karma to afflict his brothers' future and his own.

He therefore keeps a keen watch over his personality, striving to guide in
patience, calm and harmony his thoughts, feelings, words and deeds to the
extent that it is possible for him to do this.

He seeks to embody the wisdom he has acquired, practically as a condition of
his life.

He perceives that onward progress and growth is a growing capacity to unite
with as many of the scattered fragments of the One SELF as he may
consciously do, and without in any way abridging their free will or rights,
or interfering with their particular duties.

He gives his first attention to learning what Theosophy is, through study,
and in providing the same opportunity to as many of his companions as he may
contact. This implies keeping available the teachings of the Messengers of
Theosophy, and distributing them by word of mouth or in printed form.

He exemplifies in daily life and in his relations with others an increasing
attempt to embody in practice the doctrines he studies and verifies on his
own.

To deepen his understanding and to widen his knowledge of Theosophy he makes
a point of attending such meetings of the ULT as are available to him to
attend, thus providing the classes with the benefit of his preparation and
study, his presence and thought at the meeting, and the providing of such
constructive critique of the work being done as may benefit the whole group.
This serves to enhance the magnetic force of those meetings, and also to
draw to them the Influence from Those who are our Teachers.

THEOSOPHICAL MAGAZINES AND PERIODICALS

Since magazines are published he would endeavor from time to time to
see that their circulation is increased, that contributions in articles and
questions or answers are made, and that the text books of Theosophy are kept
in print.

1.	"Theosophy Magazine"

It is a monthly, published since 1912. It is designed to provide associates,
wherever located, with reprints of articles of HPB and WQJ from out-of-print
sources, study material, news and views, and information on ULT activities,
and events of theosophical significance. A coverage of many of the
questions and work currently being done relating to discoveries which are
"in the news," and which have some relation to Theosophical doctrines and
studies are handled in the departments : "On The Lookout," and "Letters -
Questions - Comments."

2.	"The Theosophical Movement"

Is a monthly magazine published since November 1929 from Bombay,
India It follows the same policies that were set down for Theosophy
Magazine. The monthly "department" is called In The Light of Theosophy.

Library Books

A Public library or libraries may be kept supplied with copies of books and
magazines of original Theosophy.

Many an inquirer has come the ULT after finding a copy of THE SECRET
DOCTRINE, ISIS UNVEILED, THE KEY TO THEOSOPHY, or THE OCEAN OF THEOSOPHY on
the shelves of a public library.

A ULT may keep some time open for the public to come and read those books
that present "the Original Teachings of Theosophy." While other books may
be had, if available for reference, their selection is usually made by the
oldest and most responsible of the Associates. In general it may be said
that controversial literature may be had in other places than a ULT Library.

Individual Commitments and Responsibility

All commitments made by associates are made to their HIGHER SELF (Atma).
The "Associate Card" is specific on this. This follows the law of evolution
in Nature. We rise or fall according to the efforts we put into our
progress in all things; so too, in Theosophy. This is the root of real
moral strength, since it is not dependent on an external code, credo, or any
person, rule or ritual. It arises from each one's Soul determination.
Each associate, as a personality, faces his own "HIGHER SELF" ( the ATMA
within ). HPB defines IT in the KEY TO THEOSOPHY, p. 174-5.

Each student is set upon his own feet, but is also assured of the friendly
interest and companionship of those brothers who have determined to follow a
similar course of work and discovery --of themselves. Through the writings
of the messengers, they are placed into direct contact with the Adepts, and
the Lodge of "Elder Brothers" who keep these verities before the world;
and, who caused this message to be recorded through the sacrifice of HPB and
WQJ. We owe them the greatest of gratitude.

The first principle is that any work done in and for ULT is not for ones'
self but for the public. More specifically, it is for anyone who desires to
contact the living power that THEOSOPHY represents. Ours is the
responsibility and duty to pass it on.

Impersonality

Impersonality and diligence are the prime assets of any person who lends his
personal self to Theosophical work in the ULT. He has to make a mental
determination to devote all the time and energy he can to such work. If his
karma has given him ease in the understanding of Theosophical principles,
then that same karma would require of him all the energy that he can give to
assist in others needs, and in passing on the knowledge he has acquired of
Theosophy, other than that which family duties and responsibilities may
demand as duty from him. Family duties are not to be shirked.

Impersonality implies avoiding thrusting oneself forward, and of according
to others all the credit they deserve. The less one's own "personality" is
involved, the better. The conference method is that which is adopted by the
ULT in its work. The DECLARATION is the final criterion for all. This
implies the brotherly giving and receiving of advice, admonition, and
praise. But even these ought not to be expected, but only welcomed when
received as evidence of the caring of others and the regard in which our
contribution to the primary objective: the serving of others with the
"sacrifice of such knowledge as we can offer, is held.

If we consider this work to be a continuation of our eternal work, as
immortals, for a universal purpose: the perfection through universalizing
of our consciousness, then the purely personal objections as to energy loss,
pressures, health, and other transitory matters assume a more reasonable
place in the balance to be established by himself, for himself, in
cooperation with such others as may also make such decisions, and assist, in
brotherhood, in such an effort. And yet, there can be no coercion of
others. We can only shoulder the responsibilities we have given ourselves.

THEOSOPHY -- Its Antiquity and Diffusion

Theosophy is an ancient, and continues to be a modern, method of scientific
investigation of Nature and a recording of the findings therein. It is not
a "religion" as it does not divide man from man, as most formal "religions"
now seem to do. But, perhaps. in the true sense of religion (re-ligiare) it
binds all humanity into a single brotherhood. This is the claim of
THEOSOPHY.

At once it is all three: scientific, philosophical and religious, as an
integrated whole. One might call it the original and most comprehensive
ecological system, to use a modern concept that draws in all factors
affecting the World and any group or species on it. [ see S D I pp 272-3
]

Theosophy has been called a way of looking at the phenomena of the World (or
Nature), and that does not involve "belief" or "blind faith" in any way. It
is a method of describing what can be observed in the many departments of
Nature, both visible and invisible.

Any statement or doctrine is always subject to independent investigation,
logic and analysis. Students of the writings of Mme. Blavatsky who compare
them to the statements made by the Masters of Wisdom, for whom she served as
agent, or messenger, have found that they are in agreement as to meaning and
context, if not as to exact phrasing. Her last book THE SECRET DOCTRINE
(1888) was written so as to unify and bind together all the material that
had been discussed and studied since the publication of ISIS UNVEILED
(1877), and the many magazine articles in between by herself, Judge,
Sinnett, and many others. HPB's last article: MY BOOKS makes this clear.

"Theosophy," as a Greek term is traced back to the time of Pythagoras. Its
equivalent in antique Hindu systems of philosophy (the Shad Darshanas) is:
"Gupta Vidya," or "Ghuya Vidya" (secret, or esoteric wisdom). Equivalent
terms are to be traced in all antique systems of philosophy and religion,
regardless of location or age. The Mysteries of ancient Egypt and later of
Greece. would seem to indicate the presence of Theosophy there.

It is possible to trace back in time a primary system of philosophy which
became sacerdotal, and perverted a search for Truth, It was developed by
those who desired "authority" into an exclusive "religion," generally
antagonistic to others. The "primary system" can be traced. It has existed
from so far back in time that its actual beginning cannot be discerned
accurately. First the root, then the trunk of this "Tree of Wisdom" can be
traced through many aeons of time, changes of language, times and customs.
It is also for this reason that Theosophy has been called a Science, a
Philosophy and a Religion.

Theosophy is truly a universal, a world-wide record of scientific
observation conducted over many ages by a vast body of students guided in
their study and research by the Sages and Wise Men of the world. It is not
of "Eastern" origin, although the availability of its earliest expositions
has been better preserved in the "East" than in the "West" for this cycle.
The World is round and Lodges or Schools where the ancient Wisdom-Religion
has been preserved, studied and taught are to be found in many places around
the world and in many languages and traditions. Isis Unveiled and The
Secret Doctrine adduce a range of documents which show this antiquity and
universality.

Distortion and missapplication have from time to time overlaid the original
growth. Every religion carries the tradition of this wonderful tree. To
its preservation and cultivation are said to be devoted the wise fathers of
our Races. We have never been "alone," or abandoned by them. Our freedom to
advance at our own rate of speed, to make errors and mistakes, from which we
learn, as Nature, the great mother, gently educates each one of us by
presenting us with experience and circumstances that are, as results, the
return of our choices. This is Karma in action, and evolution as an ongoing
process.

THEOSOPHY AND "THEOSOPHISTS"

As a philosophy, as a science, and as a "religion" are distinctions which
are said to be unified and correlated under the theosophical system, since
they are in real life interblend, and influence each other at all points.
In addition, Theosophy has always encouraged free and vigorous discussion
and reinvestigation of its principles and practices, so as to maintain the
highest degree of impersonality and the greatest degree of accuracy in the
practice of cooperation and understanding.

Historically, it could be considered that early "theosophists" were to be
found among those individuals and groups, who, both in our modern days, and
in the pages of known history, and pre-history were known to be "Seekers for
Truth." Actual and true "Theosophists" are to be found everywhere sketched
in the pages of history, and in our modern times, around the world.

"Theosophist" is a nonrestrictive designation, and is not intended to serve
as the designation of a separate cult, but rather of an attitude towards
living. The designation therefore may include those who are, or were
related to various groups, sometimes called "Theosophical."

The vocabulary and methods of work in Theosophy are those of a well
developed ecological group, the members of which are students of Nature as a
whole, and whose findings and records mirror this eclectic attitude. This
is the basis for stating that cooperation is the key-note of existence among
all the varied components of the Universe in all its many departments. The
simplest and yet most telling of designations that can be employed to draw
attention to this fact is "Brotherhood."

United Lodge of Theosophists: its Nature and Work

The "Declaration of the U.L.T." is the sole document that unites all
associates, and is the basis upon which all work is done. It is
non-exclusive.

An "associate" of the ULT is an associate of all ULTs.

U.L.T. has only one function: to keep in print, and before the world, the
"Teachings of Theosophy as recorded in the writings of H.P.Blavatsky and
W.Q.Judge."

This activity, falls into two spheres of interactive work: publications, and
lectures and study classes. Those who feel it part of their responsibility
to keep the ideas Theosophy offers alive and available to others, sustain
the ULT.

Conventions and Meetings.

The current Program of Activities of the ULT sets these out. Every ULT
Lodge, and many ULT Study Groups issue their own Programs in a local format.
Most Lodges follow the same general pattern of work.

Observations:

An associate of any ULT is an associate of all ULTs.

No fees or dues are asked for or required from anyone

Financial assistance is welcome if anonymous and unrestricted.

All work done is by volunteers.

It has grown in strength because of its non-authoritarian and single pointed
objective: "To spread broadcast the teachings of Theosophy as recorded in
the writings of H.P.Blavatsky and William Q. Judge."

Lodges in a number of foreign countries conduct their own translating and
publishing programs to ensure the availability and dissemination of original
Theosophical texts for study in the local language of their country.

An accurate and documentary survey of recent Theosophical history can be had
from THE THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT (1875 - 1950), issued by the Cunningham
Press, Los Angeles in 1951.

A pamphlet titled: THE UNITED LODGE OF THEOSOPHISTS -- ITS MISSION AND ITS
FUTURE gives expression of the views, current work and the hopes of the
associates of the ULT.

Theosophical Study and Work

Like a scientist-researcher studying as his specialty any of the numerous
departments of Nature, so the practicing Theosophist studies some one or
several aspects of that same Nature, and in addition is a careful student of
his own psychology and personal nature. He is specially aware of the rest
of the environment, and records observations inclusive of correlations,
analogies and other sympathies he sees there.

ULT affords through its study-classes a forum where such individual findings
can be discussed with others, so that the accuracy which several minds can
lend to understanding a subject may be taken advantage of.

ULT claims no "true believers." ULT does claim, as true Theosophists, many
students of Nature, Scientists, Philosophers, Artists, Ecologists, Sages,
Statesmen, Wise Personages of all times and of all climes, and avers that
they appear to have formed a part of this ancient society, or body of
searchers into the secrets which Nature holds for the investigator.

Underlying the horrors of an age of chaotic anarchy lie the immutable
principles and rules of Nature, of sane living, and of the quiet search for
the life that leads to the summit of man's intellectual quest, and heart
striving. This may be termed: "the service of Humanity."

It is only reasonable to conclude that there has always existed a band of
wise individuals, of sages, professors, teachers and practitioners of
benevolence to mankind; and this group has existed down the ages.

They have passed on the records of their study, findings and research from
age to age, and from open or from secret locations, to those only who have
proved that they were trustworthy in guarding humanity from such facts and
knowledge, which through its abuse, could bring infinite disaster upon the
whole world. This band of the Wise designate themselves: "The Servants of
Humanity."

One might say that the records of Theosophy are essentially historical, that
they invite critical review from anyone, specialists as well as students, so
that their accuracy is constantly refined. The trends of rise and fall in
civilizations, the power of great ideas, the conflicts of politics and the
cultural biases and prejudices of nations, religions and races are all
viewed in Theosophy, as transitory. Yet each influences the future, as the
great law of Karma demands that exact effect follow its cause. Always, the
trends are towards the improvement of life for the mass of mankind, and
their gradual self-enlightenment.

A "Theosophist" is one who makes use of these ideas in directing his way of
living and his attitude towards others which whom he lives. He looks on all
beings and humans as his brothers, and seeks to treat them with the courtesy
and respect which they deserve.

A "Theosophist" is not necessarily a member of any formal organized group of
individuals who use the word "Theosophy," or "Theosophical" to designate
their "association" or "society." To be a true theosophist would be to
adopt and practice a disciplined attitude of responsible living, such as
outlined above. Outward, worldly affiliations would count for nothing,
except for those who need labels and make distinctions.

The true Theosophist unites, he does not divide or segregate. He seeks to
share his knowledge and his hand is always extended in help to those who
make inquiry.

In Mme. Blavatsky's books and articles will be found many important
statements defining these two questions, and a culling of those makes for
very interesting reading, as she maintains that the facts of evolutionary
progress demand a firm basis for moral, ethical and community life. She
posits the idea that morals and ethics are as much a necessary aspect of
true science as any other area of research and exploration. And yet she
says, modestly, that her way and path of work is not that which others ought
to follow, nor are her expositions of doctrine to be treated as definitive.
At no point is any orthodoxy or doctrine made mandatory so as to enable one
to become a member of the Theosophical Society.

In Theosophy, the whole of nature is deemed to be our "community." Every
man, woman and child in the world is similarly deemed to be one of our
brothers or sisters. The ancient "golden Rule," is perhaps the simplest way
of defining a sure guide for living with others. From another view-point
one might see our Universe as a vast school and every intelligent and
conscious unit therein as potentially a divine immortal being (just as the
atom is immutable and indestructible, so the Spirit-Soul in man is held to
be immortal and perfectible--this being the ultimate goal for each of us ).

If greater emphasis is found to be placed on the writings of Mme. Blavatsky
rather than any others by the ULT, it is because she was accredited by the
Wise Men of the "ancient and secret brotherhood of Sages" as their
"messenger;" and, because one may detect a wisdom innate in those
expressions, which in the 85 years of existence of the ULT, its students
have yet to prove inaccurate, immoral, or delusive.

In simple terms, true Theosophy is cosmopolitan and eclectic, Any attempt
to restrict it is futile. It is the inheritance of the Race. Its
philosophical and scientific system is found to be coherent from first to
last. No statement can be taken as "authoritative" unless it is found to
agree with all others and fit into the Unity of Nature. Hence BROTHERHOOD
is the noblest as well as the simplest expression of its nature, and of the
reason for the establishment of the Theosophical Society in 1875.

SOME QUOTATIONS on THEOSOPHY and THEOSOPHISTS

"Theosophia (Greek). Wisdom-religion, or "Divine Wisdom." The
substratum and basis of all the world-religions and philosophies, taught and
practiced by a few elect ever since man became a thinking being. In its
practical bearing, Theosophy is purely divine ethics..."
THEOSOPHICAL GLOSSARY, p.328

"Theosophists. A name by which many mystics at various periods of
history have called themselves. The Neo-Platonists of Alexandria were
Theosophists; the Alchemists and Kabalists during the medieval ages were
likewise so called, also the Martinists, the Quietists and
others...independently or incorporated in a brotherhood or society. All
real lovers of divine Wisdom and Truth had, and have a right to the name,
rather than those who, appropriating the qualification, live lives or
perform actions opposed to the principles of Theosophy...the Theosophists of
the current century have already visibly impressed themselves on modern
literature, and introduced the desire and craving for some philosophy in
place of the blind dogmatic faith of yore, among the most intelligent
portions of human-kind..."	T. GLOS. p. 328

"Theosophical Society, or "Universal Brotherhood." Founded in 1875
at New York...Its avowed object was at first the scientific investigation of
psychic or so-called "spiritualistic" phenomena, after which its three
objects were declared, namely:--

(1) Brotherhood of man, without distinction of race, color, religion,
or social position;

(2) the serious study of the ancient world-religions for purposes of
comparison and the selection therefrom of universal ethics; [and]

(3) the study and development of the latent divine powers in man..."
THEOSOPHICAL GLOSSARY, p. 328

"...it is perhaps desirable to state unequivocally that the teachings,
however fragmentary and incomplete, contained in those volumes, belong
neither to the Hindu, the Zoroastrian, the Chaldean, nor the Egyptian
religion, neither to Buddhism, Islam, Judaism nor Christianity exclusively.
The Secret Doctrine is the essence of all these. Sprung from it in their
origins, the various religious schemes are now made to merge back into their
original element, out of which every mystery and dogma has grown, developed,
and become materialized." SECRET DOCTRINE I viii

"Wisdom Religion. The one religion which underlies all the now-
existing creeds. That "faith" which being primordial, and revealed directly
to human kind by their progenitors and informing Egos (though the Church
regards them as the "fallen angels"), required no "grace," nor blind faith
to believe, for it was knowledge...It is on this Wisdom Religion that
Theosophy is based." THEOSOPHICAL GLOSSARY, p. 343

"Inquirer: Are we to regard Theosophy in any way as a revelation ?

Theosophist: In no way whatever -- not even in the sense of a new
disclosure from some higher, supernatural, or, at least, superhuman beings;
but only in the sense of an "unveiling" of old, very old, truths to minds
hitherto ignorant of them, ignorant even of the existence and preservation
of any such archaic knowledge." KEY TO THEOSOPHY p. 30

"Theosophist: The WISDOM-RELIGION was ever one, and being the last
word of possible human knowledge, was, therefore, carefully preserved. It
preceded by long ages the Alexandrian Theosophists, reached the modern, and
will survive every other religion and philosophy.

Inquirer: Where and by whom was it so preserved ?

Theosophist: Among Initiates of every country; among profound
seekers after truth -- their disciples; and in those parts of the world
where such topics have always been most valued and pursued: In India,
Central Asia, and Persia."
KEY TO THEOSOPHY p. 7

"We can assert, with entire plausibility, that there is not one of
all these sects--Kabalism, Judaism, and our present Christianity
included--but sprang from the two main branches of that one mother-trunk,
the one universal religion, which antedated the Vedic ages--we speak of that
prehistoric Buddhism which merged later into Brahmanism."
ISIS UNVEILED II p.123

"By Buddhism...we mean that religion signifying literally the
doctrine of wisdom, and which, by many ages, antedates the metaphysical
philosophy of Siddartha Sakyamuni." ISIS II p.143

"Theosophy is the most serious movement of this age (Key, 271)... is
synonymous with EVERLASTING TRUTH (Key, 304)...It is Divine Knowledge or
Science..."Divine Wisdom," Theosophia or Wisdom of the Gods (Key, 1). The
substratum and basis of all the world-religions and philosophies, taught and
practiced by a few elect ever since man became a thinking being. In its
practical bearing, Theosophy is purely divine ethics."
THEOS. GLOS., p.328

[Theosophy] "Intellectually, an attitude; practically, a method;
ethically a spirit; and religiously, a life...Its creed is loyalty to Truth,
and its ritual "to honor every Truth by use."
THEOS. MOVEMENT, Vol. 2, p. 86

Theosophical Objectives -- Some Quotations

"...the enormous, almost limitless, responsibility assumed by the
teacher for the sake of the pupil...they take upon themselves all the sins
of that pupil, in connection with the Occult Sciences, whether of omission
or commission until the moment when initiation makes the pupil a Master and
responsible in his turn."	HPB ARTICLES II 91

"Theosophy can only find objective expression in an all-embracing code of
life, thoroughly impregnated with the spirit of mutual tolerance, charity,
and brotherly love. Its Society, as a body, has a task before it which,
unless performed with the utmost discretion, will cause the world of the
indifferent and the selfish to rise up in arms against it. Theosophy has to
fight intolerance, prejudice, ignorance, and selfishness, hidden under the
mantle of hypocrisy. It has to throw all the light it can from the torch of
Truth, with which its servants are entrusted. It must do this without fear
or hesitation, dreading neither reproof nor condemnation. Theosophy,
through its mouthpiece, the Society, has to tell the TRUTH to the very face
of LIE; to beard the tiger in its den, without thought or fear of evil
consequences, and to set at defiance calumny and threats...No Theosophist
should blame a brother, whether within or outside of the association;
neither may he throw a slur upon another's actions or denounce him, lest he
himself lose the right to be considered a Theosophist. For, as such, he has
to turn away his gaze from the imperfections of his neighbor, and center
rather his attention upon his own shortcomings, in order to correct them and
become wiser. Let him not show the disparity between claim and action in
another, but, whether in the case of a brother, a neighbor, or simply a
fellow man, let him rather ever help one weaker than himself on the arduous
walk of life.

The problem of true Theosophy and its great mission are, first, the working
out of clear unequivocal conceptions of ethic ideas and duties (243) such as
shall best and most fully satisfy the right and altruistic feelings in men;
and, second, the molding of these conceptions for their adaptation into such
forms of daily life, as shall offer a field where they may be applied with
most equitableness.

Such is the common work placed before all who are willing to act on these
principles...Do not indulge personally in unbrotherly comparison between the
task accomplished by yourself and the work left undone by your neighbor or
brothers. In the fields of Theosophy none is held to weed out a larger plot
of ground than his strength and capacity will permit him. Do not be too
severe on the merits or demerits of one who seeks admission among your
ranks, as the truth about the actual state of the inner man can only be
known to Karma, and can be dealt with justly by that all-seeing LAW alone."
MASTER, THEOSOPHY, Vol. 70, p. 242

"I have labored for more than a quarter of a century night and day to keep
my place within the ranks of that invisible but every busy army which labors
and prepares for a task which can bring no reward but the consciousness we
are doing our duty to humanity; and, meeting you on my way I have tried
to...simply draw your attention, excite your curiosity if not your better
feelings to the one and only truth... If your efforts will teach the world
but one single letter of the alphabet of Truth..."
MASTER, MAHATMA LETTERS, p.242

Theosophical Work

"It is the Master's work to preserve the true philosophy, but the help of
the companions is needed to rediscover and promulgate it. Once more the
elder brothers have indicated where the truth--Theosophy--could be found,
and the companions all over the world are engaged in bringing it forth for
wider currency and propagation."
JUDGE - OCEAN OF THEOSOPHY, p. 6

"We have offered to exhume the primeval strata of man's being, his basic
nature, and lay bare the wonderful complications of his inner Self...and
demonstrate it scientifically...It is our mission to plunge and bring the
pearls of Truth to the surface; theirs [men of science] to clean and set
them into scientific jewels...For countless generations hath the adept
builded a fane of imperishable rocks...to invite the elite of mankind to
cooperate with him and help in his turn enlighten superstitious man...until
that day when the foundations of a new continent of thought are so firmly
built..."	MASTER, MAHATMA LETTERS, p. 51

What Work can Theosophists Do ?

"We seek to bring men to sacrifice their personality--a passing flash--for
the welfare of the whole of humanity."
MASTER, MAHATMA LETTERS, p.231

"The main and underlying effort of the work of the members of the Society
should be to furnish a real and philosophical basis for ethics...Opposition
to dogma is not opposition to truth, and hence the Society a builder up and
not a mere destroyer of old beliefs...the philosophy put forward by
members...gives reasonable explanations of life, of man, and of nature:
tends to remove superstition by showing what psychical phenomena are, and
why they occur...meets all the facts and solves them, and shows how man may,
if he will, reach to the power hinted at by all the great teachers of the
world."	WQJ - THEOS. MVT. Vol. 28, p. 85-86

"...learn that you may teach, acquire spiritual knowledge and
strength that the weak may lean on you...make your home one of the most
important centers of spiritualizing influence in all the world...encouraging
the visits of your fellow members and of inquirers and by holding meetings
of the more congenial for study and instruction...constantly advise with
your associates in the Council how to make the general meetings of the Lodge
interesting. New members should be taken in hand from the first...and
instructed thoroughly in what you have already learnt, so that they may be
capable of participating intelligently in the proceedings...keep in
correspondence with all others [who] need your help...your Branch can, and
should help...to circulate [the Mother Society's] publications and to have
them translated into other languages when worthy of it...Deeds are what we
want and demand...Think you the truth has been shown to you for your sole
advantage? That we have broken the silence of centuries for the profit of a
handful of dreamers only ? The converging lines of your Karma have drawn
each and all of you into this Society as to a common focus that you may each
help to work out the results of your interrupted beginnings in the last
birth." MASTER,
LETTERS from THE MASTERS OF WISDOM, 1st Series, (1919) p. 20-4

Working Together

"A band of the students of the Esoteric Doctrines, who would reap
any profit spiritually must be in perfect harmony and unity of
thought...utterly unselfish, kind and full of goodwill towards each
other...no party spirit...no backbiting, no ill-will or envy or jealousy,
contempt or anger..."	MASTER,
LETTERS from THE MASTERS OF WISDOM, 1st Series'., p. 16-17

"...to work properly in our Great Cause it is necessary to forget
all personal differences of opinion as to how the work is to be carried on.
Let each of us work in his own way and not endeavor to force our ideas of
work upon our neighbor."
H.P.B. FIVE MESSAGES, p. 16

"Masters require only that each shall do his best, and, above all,
that each shall strive in reality to feel himself one with his
fellow-workers...a true hearty devotion to our cause which will lead each to
help his brother to the utmost of his power to work for that cause, whether
or not we agree as to the exact method of carrying out that work. The only
man who is absolutely wrong in his method is the one who does nothing."
H.P.B. FIVE MESSAGES, p. 24

"...he who is desirous to learn how to benefit humanity, and
believes himself able to read the characters of other people, must begin
first of all, to learn to know himself, to appreciate his own character at
its true value."	MASTER, MAHATMA LETTERS, p. 222

"It is he alone who has the love of humanity at heart, who is capable
of grasping thoroughly the idea of a regenerating practical Brotherhood who
is entitled to our secrets."	MASTER, MAHATMA LETTERS, p. 252

Ethics - Personal Discipline - Virtue

"..the ethics of Theosophy are more important than any divulgement
of psychic laws and facts...the Ethics sink into and take hold of the real
man--the reincarnating Ego...Learn well, then, the doctrines of Karma and
Reincarnation, and teach, practice and promulgate that system of life and
through which alone can save the coming races."
--HPB 5 MESSAGES, p. 26

"...the real esoteric system...renunciation of Nirvana for the sake
of mankind is preached...One of its fundamental laws is, that ordinary
morality is insufficient to deliver one from rebirth; one has to practice
the six Paramitas or cardinal virtues...Bodhisattvas...become Nirmanakayas.
learning the truth and thus saving themselves."
HPB ARTICLES, Vol. I, p. 452

Working With Mankind

"At present, the main, fundamental object of the Society is to sow
germs in the hearts of men, which may in time sprout, and under more
propitious circumstances lead to a healthy reform, conducive of more
happiness to the masses than they have hitherto enjoyed."
HPB KEY TO THY., p. 257

"...the theosophist's duty is like that of the husbandman: to turn
his furrows and sow his grains as best he can; the issue is with nature,
and she, the slave of Law."	MASTER,
MAHATMA LETTERS, p. 339-40

"It is the rich who have to be regenerated, if we would do good to
the poor... Work, therefore, to bring about the moral regeneration of the
cultured [classes] before you attempt to do the same for our ignorant
younger Brethren... If asked, what is it that will help, we answer
boldly:--Theosophical literature: hastening to add that under this term,
neither books concerning adepts and phenomena, nor the TS publications are
meant... Theosophy alone can gradually create a mankind as harmonious and as
simple-souled as Kosmos itself; but to effect this, theosophists will have
to act as such."
H.P.B.- TIDAL WAVE -	HPB ARTICLES, Vol. I, p.103-5

"Theosophists are of necessity the friends of all movements...for
the amelioration of the conditions of mankind...who seek to lift a little of
the tremendous weight of misery that is crushing down the poor...The
function of Theosophists is to open men's hearts and understandings to
charity, justice, and generosity, attributes which belong to the human
kingdom and are natural to man when he has developed the qualities of a
human being. Theosophy teaches the animal-man to become a human-man."
H.P.B. FIVE MESSAGES, p. 8-9

"...the voice of the great human Soul proclaims, in no longer timid
tones, the rise and almost the resurrection of the human Spirit in the
masses...A new era has begun in literature...
he who, parting company with his beloved "authority," lifts boldly and
carries on unflinchingly the standard of the Future Man...will have bravely
fought for human rights and man's divine nature, who will become...the
teacher of the masses in the coming century..." HPB - TIDAL WAVE -
HPB ARTICLES, Vol. I, p. 99-101

"On that day when Theosophy will have accomplished its most holy and most
important mission--namely to unite firmly a body of men of all nations in
brotherly love and bent on a pure altruistic work, not on a labor with
selfish motives--on that day only will Theosophy become higher than any
nominal brotherhood of man."	H.P.B. FIVE MESSAGES, p. 5

Future Work and Responsibility

"[ The Theosophical Society ]...its basis was intended to rest on equality,
autonomy and toleration, its prime object being universal brotherhood, of
which it was hoped the germ or nucleus might be formed. All members are on
an equal footing, as is shown by its rule that caste, color, religion,
creed, sex have no bearing on the question of membership in any way. The
founders did not hold the idea that all men are equal in all things, but
they did lay it down that in respect to membership they were and should be
equal. This has even been its law."
Judge - THE T S AND ITS BASIS - THEOSOPHY Vol. 34, p. 5

"...the great need which our successors in the guidance of the
Society will have of unbiased and clear judgment. Every such attempt as the
TS has hitherto ended in failure, because sooner or later, it has
degenerated into a sect, set up hard-and-fast dogmas of its own, and so lost
by imperceptible degrees that vitality which living truth alone can impart."
H.P.B., KEY TO THEOSOPHY, p. 305-6

"...the plan is to keep [the TS] alive as an active, free, unsectarian body
during the time of waiting for the next great messenger, who will be herself
beyond question...And in this time of waiting the Master, that great
Initiate, whose single will upholds the entire movement, "will have his
mighty hand spread wide behind the Society."
W.Q.Judge - WQJ ARTICLES, Vol. II, p. 153

"Let us then press forward together in the great work of the real
Theosophical Movement which is aided by working organizations, but is above
them all. Together we can devise more and better ways for spreading the
light of truth through all the earth. Mutually assisting and encouraging
one another we may learn how to put Theosophy into practice so as to be able
to teach and enforce it by example before others. We will then each and all
be members of that Universal Lodge of Free and Independent Theosophists
which embraces every friend of the human race." ( Italics ours.)
WQJ LETTER TO EUROPEAN CONVENTION July 4th 1895

Future of the Theosophical Movement and its Societies

"Then the Society will live on into and through the 20th century. It
will gradually leaven and permeate the great masses of thinking and
intelligent people with its large-minded and noble ideas of Religion, Duty,
and Philanthropy. Slowly but surely it will burst asunder the iron fetters
of creeds and dogmas, of social and caste prejudices; it will break down
racial and national antipathies and barriers, and will open the way to the
practical realization of the Brotherhood of all men. Through its teaching,
through the philosophy which it has rendered accessible and intelligible to
the modern mind, the West will learn to understand and appreciate the East
at its true value. Further, the development of the psychic powers and
faculties, the premonitory symptoms of which are already visible in America,
will proceed healthily and normally. Mankind will be saved from the
terrible dangers, both mental and bodily, which are inevitable when that
unfolding takes place, as it threatens to do in a hot-bed of selfishness and
all evil passions. Man's mental and psychic growth will proceed in harmony
with his moral improvement, while his material surroundings will reflect the
peace and fraternal good-will which will reign in his mind, instead of the
discord and strife which is everywhere apparent around us to-day."
--HPB	KEY, p. 306-7

" If the present attempt, in the form of our Society, succeeds better
than its predecessors have done, then it will be in existence as an
organized, living and healthy body when the time comes for the effort of the
XXth century. The general condition of men's minds and hearts will have
been improved and purified by the spread of its teachings, and, as I have
said, their prejudices and dogmatic illusions will have been, to some extent
at least, removed. Not only so, but besides a large and accessible
literature ready to men's hands, the next impulse will find a numerous and
united body of people ready to welcome the new torch-bearer of Truth. He
will find the minds of men prepared for his message, a language ready for
him in which to clothe the new truths he brings, an organization awaiting
his arrival, which will remove the merely mechanical, material obstacles and
difficulties from his path. Think how much one, to whom such an opportunity
is given, could accomplish. Measure it by comparison with what the T.S.
actually has achieved in the last 14 years, without any of these advantages
and surrounded by hosts of hindrances which would not hamper the new leader.
Consider all this, and then tell me whether I am too sanguine when I say
that if the T.S. survives and lives true to its mission, to its original
impulses through the next 100 years--tell me, I say, if I go too far in
asserting that earth will be a heaven in the 21st century in comparison with
what it is now !" -- HPB KEY, p. 306-7

"On the day when Theosophy will have accomplished its most holy and
most important mission--namely to unite firmly a body of men of all nations
in brotherly love and bent on a pure altruistic work, not on a labor with
selfish motives--on that day only will Theosophy become higher than any
nominal brotherhood of man. This will be a wonder and a miracle truly, for
the realization of which Humanity has been vainly waiting for the last 18
centuries...According as people are prepared to receive it, so will new
Theosophical teachings be given. But no more will be given than the world,
on its present level of spirituality, can profit by. It depends on the
spread of Theosophy--the assimilation of what has been already given--how
much more will be revealed and how soon...[ The Society ] was intended to
stem the current of materialism, and also that of spiritualistic
phenomenalism and the worship of the Dead. It had to guide the spiritual
awakening that has now begun, and not to pander to psychic cravings which
are but another form of materialism...an anti-philosophical negation of pure
spirit, and, even more, materialism in conduct and action--brutality,
hypocrisy, and, above all, selfishness...The tendency of modern civilization
is a reaction towards animalism, towards a development of those qualities
which conduce to the success in life of man as an animal in the struggle for
animal existence. Theosophy seeks to develop the human nature in man in
addition to the animal, and at the sacrifice of the superfluous animality
which modern life and materialistic teachings have developed to a degree
which is abnormal for the human being at this stage of his progress...the
essence of Theosophy is the perfect harmonizing of the divine with the human
in man, the adjustment of his god-like qualities and aspirations, and their
sway over the terrestrial or animal passions in him. Kindness, absence of
every ill feeling or selfishness, charity, good-will to all beings, and
perfect justice to others as to one's self, are its chief features. He who
teaches Theosophy preaches the gospel of good-will..."
-- HPB FIVE MESSAGES pp. 5-7

"...you in America. Your Karma as a nation has brought Theosophy home
to you. The life of the Soul, the psychic side of nature, is open to many
of you. The life of altruism is not so much a high ideal as a matter of
practice. Naturally, then, Theosophy finds a home in many hearts and minds,
and strikes a resounding harmony as soon as it reaches the ears of those who
are ready to listen. There, then, is part of your work: to lift high the
torch of Liberty of the Soul of Truth that all may see it and benefit by its
light.

Therefore it is that the Ethics of Theosophy are even more necessary to
mankind than the scientific aspects of the psychic facts of nature and
man...What can be done...is for each Fellow of the Society to make Theosophy
a vital factor in their lives--to make it real, to weld its principles
firmly into their lives--...to make it their own and treat the TS as if it
were themselves. Following closely on this is the necessity for Solidarity
among the Fellows of the Society; the acquisition of such a feeling of
identity with each and all of our Brothers that an attack upon one is an
attack upon all."
--HPB FIVE MESSAGES p. 12-13

"Psychism, with all its allurements and all its dangers, is necessarily
developing among you, and you must beware lest the Psychic outruns the
Manasic and Spiritual development. Psychic capacities held perfectly under
control, checked and directed by the Manasic principle, are valuable aids in
development. But these capacities running riot, controlling instead of
being controlled, using instead of being used, lead the Student into the
most dangerous delusions and the certainty of moral destruction. Watch
therefore carefully this development, inevitable in your race and
evolution-period so that it may finally work for good and not for evil..."
-- HPB	FIVE MESSAGES, p. 29

"...the present America is not the actual Continent as it is to be, it
is a portion of it; and certainly is now the nursery for the race that will
in future occupy the sixth Continent, which for the 6th Great Root-Race will
emerge from the waters...it is in the Pacific Ocean that the great mass of
the new one will come up from the long sleep below the sea...the Americans
have become in only 300 years a primary race pro tem., in short, the germs
of the 6th sub-race in all its characteristics. Then after about 25,000
years...a great sidereal cycle...this new race will prepare for the 7th
sub-race. Cataclysms will then fall upon you, lands and nations will be
swept away, first of all being the European, including the British
Isles...then parts of North and South America... It was to the United
States, observe, that the messenger of the Masters came, although Europe was
just as accessible for the enterprise set on foot.

Later, the messenger [HPB] went to India and then to Europe, settling
down in the British Isles. All of this is importance in our
reflections...It was all out of stern necessity, with a wisdom derived from
many older heads, having in view the cycles (133) as they sweep resistlessly
forward. The point where the great energy is started, the center of force,
is the more important, and not the place at which it is ended."
WQJ ARTICLES II 130 - 134

"Striving thus in unison with your Higher Self, your efforts must and
will be fruitful of good to the Society, to yourselves, to Humanity. Coming
years will show a steady, healthy growth, a strong, united organization, a
durable, reliable, and efficient instrument ready to the Masters' hands.
Once united in real solidarity, in the true spirit of Universal Brotherhood,
no power can overthrow you, no obstacle bar your progress, no barrier check
the advance of Theosophy in the coming century....Let the encouragement we
draw from a survey of the results accomplished in the year that has fled
serve to spur us on to greater efforts and more strenuous exertions. Let it
make all feel that there is a power behind the Society which will give us
the strength we need, which will enable us to move the world, if we will but
UNITE and WORK as on mind, one heart. The Masters require only that each
shall do his best, and, above all, that each shall strive in reality to feel
himself one with his fellow-workers."	--HPB	FIVE MESSAGES p. 23-4

"[ 1891 ] The period which we have now reached in the cycle that will
close between 1897-98 is, and will continue to be, one of great conflict and
continued strain. If the T.S. can hold through it, good; if not, while
Theosophy will remain unscathed, the Society will perish--perchance most
ingloriously--and the World will suffer...The critical nature of the stage
on which we have entered is as well known to the forces that fight against
us as to those that fight on our side.

No opportunity will be lost of sowing dissension, of taking
advantage of mistaken and false moves, of instilling doubt, of augmenting
difficulties, of breathing suspicions, so that by any and every means the
unity of the Society may be broken and the ranks of our Fellows thinned and
thrown into disarray...divided, they will inevitably be broken, one by one;
united, there is no force on earth able to destroy our Brotherhood. Now I
have marked with pain a tendency among you...to quarrel over trifles, and to
allow your very devotion to the cause of Theosophy to lead you into
disunion.

Believe me...advantage is taken by our ever-watchful enemies of your
noblest qualities to betray and to mislead you. Skeptics will laugh at this
statement, and even to some of you may put small faith in the actual
existence of the terrible forces of these mental, hence subjective and
invisible, yet withal living and potent influences around all of us... those
who place their personal pride higher than their duty to the T.S., higher
even than their pledge to their divine SELF, the effect is generally
disastrous.

Self-watchfulness is never more necessary than when a personal wish
to lead, and wounded vanity, dress themselves in the peacock's feathers of
devotion and altruistic work;...If every Fellow in the Society were content
to be an impersonal force for good, careless of praise of blame so long as
he subserved the purposes of the Brotherhood, the progress would astonish
the World..." --HPB	FIVE MESSAGES, p. 27-9

"It is not necessary to be conscious of the progress one has made. Nor
is the date [ 1897/98 ] in any sense an extinguisher...We make a good deal
of progress in our inner, hidden life of which we are not at all conscious.
We may not know of it until some later life...It is best to go on with duty,
and to refrain from this trying to take stock and measuring of progress. All
of our progress is in our inner nature, and not in the physical where lives
the brain, and from which the present question comes. The apparent physical
progress is evanescent. It is ended when the body dies, at which time, if
the inner man has not been allowed to guide us, the natural record against
us will be a cipher, or "failure,"

Now, as the great Adepts live in the plane of our inner nature, it
must follow that this might be actively helping every one of us after the
date referred to, and we, as physical brain men, not be conscious of it on
this plane."
WQJ ARTICLES, II 505-6

"Here, as with you, attempts are being successfully made to bring to
bear the influence of Hindu on English thought...As it is one of the tasks
of the T S to draw together the East and the West, so that each may supply
the qualities lacking in the other and develop more fraternal feelings among
nations so various, this literary intercourse will, I hope, prove to be the
utmost service in Aryanising Western thought...After all, every wish and
thought I can utter are summed up in this one sentence, the never-dormant
wish of my heart, "Be Theosophists, work for Theosophy !" Theosophy first,
and Theosophy last; for its practical realization alone can save the
Western world from that selfish and unbrotherly feeling that now divides
race from race, one nation from the other; and from that hatred of class
and social considerations that are the curse and disgrace of so-called
Christian peoples...In your hands, brothers, is placed the trust and welfare
of the coming century; and great as is the trust, so great is also the
responsibility...I ask you, in return, to strengthen the Cause by the
triumph of which that True Light, made still brighter and more glorious
through your individual and collective efforts, will lighten the World..."
-- HPB	FIVE MESSAGES, p. 30-1

"[ H P Blavatsky ]...Her aim was to elevate the race. Her method was
to deal with the mind of the century as she found it, by trying to lead it
on step by step; to seek our and educate a few who, appreciating the
majesty of the Secret Science and devoted to "the great orphan Humanity,"
could carry on her work with zeal and wisdom; to found a Society whose
efforts--however small itself might be--would inject into the thought of the
day the ideas, the doctrines, the nomenclature of the Wisdom Religion, so
that when the next century shall have seen its 75th year the new messenger
coming again into the world would find the Society still at work, the ideas
sown broadcast, the nomenclature ready to give expression and body to the
immutable truth, and thus to make easy the task which for her since 1875 was
so difficult and so encompassed with obstacles in the very paucity of the
language,--obstacles harder than all else to work against."
WQJ ARTICLES II p. 8

"[ H P B ]...passing on to the next page [SD I INTRO, xxxviii] to touch
upon the subject of the Messenger from the great Fraternity--she herself
being the one for this Century--she observes significantly: that "In Century
the 20th some disciple more informed, and far better fitted, may be sent by
the Masters of Wisdom to give final and irrefutable proofs that there exists
a science called Gupta-Vidya; and that, like the once-mysterious sources of
the Nile, the source of all religions and philosophies now known to the
world has been for many ages forgotten and lost to men, but is at last
found."

"Herein are two prophetical intimations. The first, that in the
Century just at hand the Masters may send another Messenger with power,
learning, strength, and credentials to carry on the work she began and in
which we have been so fortunate as to be companions; the second, that this
Messenger will make clear the sources we have sought. The first will be
glorious, the second satisfying; and both will help humanity. It is not
long to wait, eight years ! And cannot indiscreet Theosophists put off
attempts at the making of dogmas they might have trouble to give up?

To close these words on the future she says ( S D INTRO. I xliv ),"And
then the last prophecy contained in that book (the first volume of the
prophetic record for the Black Age) will be accomplished. We have not long
to wait, and many of us will witness the Dawn of the New Cycle, at the end
of which not a few accounts will be settled and squared between the races."

This new cycle begins in the next century, and when the end of it is
reached much that is now unknown will have been revealed; the earth itself
will give up the secrets of the past, in ignorance of which our day has
laughed at the ancients; the Fraternity will have caused "accidental
discoveries" of manuscripts and objects, the finding of which will make many
a theologian quake and bring to the barbarian followers of the ancients
great joy that they did not bow down and worship the Golden Calf of today.
And even it that great day should be some centuries away, we know that we
shall all be present in better bodies with better minds, if only we have
patience, fidelity, and courage now." WQJ ARTICLES II 82-3

"Nothing is more plain than that H.P.Blavatsky said, on the direct
authority of the Masters, that in the last 25 years of each century an
effort is made by the Lodge and its agents in the West, and that it ceases
in its direct and public form and influence with the 25th year...[ 1897
would witness the shutting of a door...]

She explained...that were the public effort to go on any longer than
that, a reaction would set in very similar to indigestion. Time must be
given for assimilation, or the "dark shadow which follows all innovations"
would crush the soul of man...the Masters have told me that They helped her
write the SECRET DOCTRINE so that the future 75 and more years should have
some material to work on, and that in the coming years that book and its
theories would be widely studied. The material given has then to be worked
over, to be assimilated for the welfare of all. No "extinguisher" will fall
therefore on us. The T S as a whole will not have the incessant care of the
Masters in every part, but must grow up to maturity on what it has with the
help to come from those few who are "chosen."

HPB has clearly pointed out in her KEY, in her conclusion, that the
plan is to keep the T S alive as an active, free, unsectarian body during
all the time of waiting for the next great messenger, WHO WILL BE HERSELF
BEYOND QUESTION [ Italics and capitals ours.] Thereby will be furnished the
well-made tool with which to work again in grander scale, and without the
fearful opposition she had without and within when she began this time. And
in all this time of waiting the Master, "that great Initiate, whose single
will upholds the entire movement," will have his mighty hand spread out wide
behind the Society.

Up to 1897 the door is open to anyone who has the courage, the force,
and the virtue to TRY, so that he can go in and make a communication with
the Lodge which shall not be broken at all when the cycle ends. But at the
striking of the hour the door will shut, and not all your pleadings and
cryings will open it to you. Those who have made the connection will have
their own doors open, but the public general door will be closed. That is
the true relation of the "extinguisher" as given by H P B and the Master.
WQJ ARTICLES II 152 - 53

"Remember that the greatest known Adept was a Western woman [HPB], a
Russian, and that the energy of the lodge of Masters was first expended here
in the West in this age. If so, is it not reasonable to suppose that the
West has its occultists even though hidden?...HPB received in her house in
New York before witnesses Western men of occult science who worked wonders
there at times. Perhaps it is as has been hinted many a time, that the true
thing is to be found in a union of the East and the West."
WQJ ARTICLES II 240

Era of Western Occultism

"Not the cultured but the ignorant masses have kept alive the belief in
the occult and the psychic now fanned into flame once more. Had we trusted
to the cultured the small ember would long ago have been extinguished ... We
have entered on the dim beginning of a new era already. It is the era of
Western Occultism and of special and definite treatment and exposition of
theories hitherto generally considered. We have to do as Buddha told his
disciples: preach, promulgate, expound, illustrate, and make clear in
detail all the great things we have learned. That is our work, and not the
bringing out of surprising things about clairvoyance and other astral
matters, not the blinding of the eye of science...The Masters' plan has not
altered. He gave it out long ago. It is to make the world at large better,
to prepare a right soil for (155) the growing out of the powers of the soul,
which are dangerous if they spring up in our present selfish soil. It is
not the Black Lodge that tries to keep back psychic development; it is the
White Lodge. The Black would fain have all the psychic powers full flower
now, because in our wicked, mean, hypocritical, and money-getting people
they would soon wreck the race...." WQJ ARTICLES II 154-5

Centenary Efforts will Continue

"The outlook, the difficulties, the dangers, the necessities are the
same now as then, and as they were in the beginning of this attempt in 1875.
For as she [HPB] has often said, this is not the first nor will in be the
last effort to spread the truths and to undertake the same mission as that
taken up by Ammonias Saccas some centuries ago--to lead men to look for the
one truth that underlies all religions and which alone can guide science in
the direction of ideal progress. In every century such attempts are made,
and many of them have been actually named "theosophical."

...there is a prophecy that those few reliable theosophists, who are
engaged in a struggle with the opposition of the world and that coming from
weak or ambitious members, will prevail, but it has annexed to it a
condition that is of importance. There must be an adherence to the program
of the Masters. [Ital. ours.]..."Let the Society flourish on its moral
worth, and not by phenomena made so often degrading." The need of the west
for such doctrines as Karma and Reincarnation and the actual Unity of the
whole human family is dwelt upon... "

Our destiny is to continue the wide work of the past in affecting
literature and thought throughout the world, while our ranks see many
changing quantities but always holding those who remain true to the program
and refuse to become dogmatic or to give up common-sense in theosophy. Thus
will we wait for the new messenger, striving to keep the organization alive
that he may use it and have the great opportunity H P B outlines when she
says, "Think how much one to whom such an opportunity is given could
accomplish." [Italic. ours.] WQJ ARTICLES II 144-147

"Why not, then, call one of our present cycles the cycle of the
Theosophical Society? It began in 1875, and, aided by other cycles then
beginning to run, it has attained some force. Whether it will revolve for
any greater length of time depends upon its earnest members ...sincere,
earnest, active, unselfish members will keep this cycle always
revolving...the mere fact that we were organized with a definite platform in
that year is strong evidence that the "heroic tribe of heroes"
[Nirmanakayas] had a hand in our formation. Let us, then, not resist the
cycle, nor...sit down to rest. There is no time for rest. The weak, the
despairing, and the doubting may have to wait, but men and women of action
cannot stand still in the face of such an opportunity.

Arise, the, O Atlanteans, and repair the mischief done so long ago !
WQJ ARTICLES I 197-8.

..."If you would really help the noble cause--you must do so now; for
a few years more and your, as well as our efforts, will be in vain." The
world moves in cycles, which proceed under the impetus of two mutually
antagonistic and destroying Forces, the one striving to move Humanity
onward, toward Spirit, the other forcing Mankind to gravitate downward, into
the very abysses of matter....Thus, also, is our present task, as
Theosophists, to help in one or the other direction. We are in the very
midst of the Egyptian darkness of Kali-yuga, the "Black Age," the first
5,000 years of which, its dreary first cycle, is preparing to close on the
world between 1897 and 1898. Unless we succeed in placing the T S before
this date on the safe side of the spiritual current, it will be swept away
irretrievably into the Deep called "Failure," and the cold waves of oblivion
will close over its doomed head. Thus will have perished the only
association whose aims, rules and original purposes answer in every
particular and detail--if strictly carried our--to the innermost,
fundamental thought of every great Adept Reformer, the beautiful dream of a
Universal Brotherhood of Man..."
-- HPB	HPB ART I 285

"If Theosophy prevailing in the struggle, its all-embracing philosophy
strikes deep root into the minds and hearts of men, if its doctrines of
Reincarnation and Karma, in other words of Hope and Responsibility, find a
home in the lives of the new generations, then, indeed, will dawn the day of
joy and gladness for all who now suffer and are outcast. For real Theosophy
is ALTRUISM, and we cannot repeat it too often. It is brotherly love,
mutual help, unswerving devotion to Truth. If once men do but realize that
in these alone can true happiness be found, and never in wealth,
possessions, or any selfish gratification, then the dark clouds will roll
away, and a new humanity will be born upon earth. Then, the GOLDEN AGE will
be there, indeed."	"OUR CYCLE AND THE NEXT" -- HPB ARTICLES I 381

"...a movement which is beginning to exercise an influence,
incalculable in its promise of good, upon the tendency of modern thought.
HPB ARTICLES I 509

"...We are in the 5th race, and we have already passed the turning or
axial point of our "sub-race cycle." Eventually ... (57) this Humanity will
be moving swiftly on the path of pure spirituality, and will reach the apex
(of our Race) at the end of the 7th sub-race...we shall be, at that period,
on the same degree of spirituality that belonged to, and was natural in, the
lst sub-race of the 3rd Root-race of the FOURTH Round: and the 2nd half of
it (or that half in which we now are) will be, owing to the law of
correspondence, on parallel lines with the first half of the THIRD
ROUND...we have to infer the following:--that the later half of our
Round,--as shown to correspond with the 1st half of the 3rd--must have
already begun to be once more overshadowed by renascent "primordial"
spirituality, which, at the end of the 4th Round, will have nearly eclipsed
our actual mentality--in the sense of cold human Reason."
HPB ARTICLES II 57

Survey of the T.S. Work

"Night before last I was shown a bird's eye-view of the present state
of Theosophy and its Societies. I saw a few earnest reliable Theosophists
in a death-struggle with the world in general and with other--nominal but
ambitious--Theosophists. The former are greater in number that you may
thin, and they prevailed, as you in America will prevail if you only remain
staunch to the Master's programme and true to yourselves. (282) ...The
defending forces have to be judiciously--so scanty they are--distributed
over the globe, wherever Theosophy is struggling against the powers of
darkness..." [ HPB in 1888 ] WQJ ARTICLES II p. 3.
WQJ LETTERS II 281-2

WHY THE VAHAN ? "...the duty of keeping all the Fellows in touch
with us, and au courant with Theosophical events--is ours. For, many of
those who being virtually cut off from almost everything that goes on in the
Theosophical centres, lose very soon their interest in the movement and
continue henceforward "Fellows" but in name.

...a true Theosophist must have no personal ends to serve, no favorite
hobby to propagate, no special doctrine to enforce or defend. For, to merit
the honorable title of Theosophist one must be an altruist, above all; one
ever ready to help equally foe or friend; to act, rather than to speak;
and urge others to action, while never losing an opportunity to work
himself...to warn his brother of any danger the latter may fail to see; and
... to share his knowledge--if he has acquired such--with those who have
been less fortunate that himself in opportunities for acquiring it."
HPB ART I 284

T S :-- Universal Brotherhood

"..[ T S ]...a purely unsectarian, unselfish body; the only one which
has no party object in view, which is open to all men, the good and the bad,
the lowly and the high, the foolish and the wise--and which calls them all
"Brothers," regardless of their religion, race, color, or station in life.
... shall not each of you put his shoulder to the wheel of the heavy car of
our Society and help us to land it safely across the abyss of matter, on to
the safe side ? " H P B HPB ARTICLES I 284-286

"Speak to the awakening Spirit of Humanity, to the human Spirit and the
Spirit in man, these three in One and the One in All."
HPB Articles, I, p. 103

"...instead of deriding our doctrines and aspirations the men of the
XXth. if not the XIXth century will see clearer, and judge with knowledge
and according to facts instead of prejudging agreeably to rooted
misconceptions...Theosophy alone can gradually create a mankind as
harmonious and as simple-souled as Kosmos itself; but to effect this
theosophists have to act as such. Having helped to awaken the spirit in
many a man--we say this boldly, challenging contradiction--shall we now stop
instead of swimming with the TIDAL WAVE ?"
HPB ARTICLES I 99 - 105

"The only saving principle dwells in man himself, and has never dwelt
outside of his immortal divine self...the divine inward light which proceeds
from the eternal unmanifesting unknown ALL. And this light can only be made
known by its works--faith in it having to remain ever blind in all, save in
the man himself who feels that light within his soul."
HPB ARTICLES I p. 71

"...practical charity is not one of the declared objects of the
Society...every member...must be practically philanthropic if he be a
theosophist at all... Theosophy creates the charity which afterwards, and of
its own accord, makes itself manifest in works." HPB ARTICLES p. 72-3

"Theosophy teaches the spirit of "non-separateness,"...
hence, inculcates universal love and charity for all mankind without
distinction of race, color, caste or creed....None would slander his
brother, none let a needy man go unhelped, none offer fine talk instead of
practical love and charity."
HPB ARTICLES I p. 73

"Those few who are ever ready to sacrifice their time and labor to work
for the poor, and who do, unrecognized and unthanked for it, good work
wherever they can ...endeavor very quietly to lead the "Christ-life,"...
HPB ARTICLES I p. 74

Misery Enjoyed by Some "Poor" -- Charity and Discrimination

"...practical philanthropists will eventually, after long and bitter
experience, arrive at a conclusion which, to an occultist, is from the first
a working hypothesis. This is that misery is not only endurable, but
agreeable to many who endure it..." HPB ARTICLES I p. 75

"...a law inexorable, by which man lifts himself by degrees from the
state of a beast to the glory of a God. The rapidity with which this is
done is different with every living soul; and the wretches who hug the
primitive taskmaster, misery, choose to go slowly...The Theosophist who
desires to enter upon occultism takes some of Nature's privileges into his
own hands, by that very wish, and soon discovers that experiences come to
him with (77) double-quick rapidity. His business is then to recognize that
he is under a--to him--new and swifter law of development, and to snatch at
the lessons that come to him."
HPB ARTICLES I p. 76-7

"...it takes a very wise man to do good works without danger of doing
incalculable harm. A highly developed adept in life may grasp the nettle,
and by his great intuitive powers, know whom to relieve from pain and whom
to leave in the mire that is their best teacher... Kindness and gentle
treatment will sometimes bring out the worst qualities of a man or woman who
has led a fairly presentable life when kept down by pain and despair....None
of us know the darkness which lurks in the depths of our own natures until
some strange and unfamiliar experience rouses the whole being into action."
HPB ARTICLES I p. 77

"H P B ... is loyal to the Theosophical CAUSE, and those great Teachers
whose philosophy can alone bind the whole of Humanity into one
Brotherhood...Therefore the degree of her sympathies with the "Theosophical
Society and Adyar" depends upon the degree of the loyalty of that Society to
the CAUSE. Let it break away from the original lines and show disloyalty in
its policy to the CAUSE and the original programme of the Society, and H P B
, calling the T S disloyal, will shake it off like dust from her feet...
There is no longer a "Parent Society;" it is abolished and replaced by an
aggregate body of Theosophical Societies, all autonomous, as are the States
of America, and all under one Head President, who, together with
H.P.Blavatsky, will champion the CAUSE against the whole world. Such is the
real state of things." --HPB HPB ARTICLES I p. 219-220

Expulsion for Backbiting and Slander by Members

"For years the wise rule by which any member accused of backbiting or
slander was expelled from the Society after sufficient evidence --has become
obsolete..." HPB ART I p. 226 fn [see also p. 243 top, p.256 ]

Danger of Apathy

"Better unwise activity, than an overdose of too wise inactivity,
apathy or indifference which are always the death of an undertaking."	HPB
ARTICLES I p. 240

Wisdom of the Universal Mind: Altruism

"...he who would profit by the wisdom of the universal mind, has to
reach it through the whole of Humanity without distinction of race,
complexion, religion or social status. It is altruism, not ego-ism even in
its most legal and noble conception, and that can lead the unit to merge its
little Self in the Universal Selves. It is to these needs and to this work
that the true disciple of true Occultism has to devote himself, if he would
obtain theo-sophy, divine Wisdom and Knowledge."	HPB ARTICLES II 107

Renunciation of Nirvana - Why Chelas Live in the World

"The very high Adepts, therefore, do help humanity, but only
spiritually: they are constitutionally incapable of meddling with worldly
affairs. But this applies only to very high Adepts. There are various
degrees of Adeptship, and those of each degree work for humanity on the
planes to which they may have risen. It is only the chelas that can live in
the world until they rise to a certain degree. And it is because the Adepts
do care for the world that they make their chelas live in and work for it,
as many of those who study the subject are aware. Each cycle produces its
own occultists who will be able to work for the humanity of those times on
all the different planes; but when the Adepts foresee that at a particular
period the then humanity will be incapable of producing occultists for work
on particular planes, for such occasions they do provide by either giving up
voluntarily their further progress and waiting in those particular degrees
until humanity reaches that period, or by refusing to enter into Nirvana and
submitting to re-incarnation in time to reach those degrees when humanity
will require their assistance at that stage. And although the world may not
be aware of the fact, yet there are even now certain Adepts who have
preferred to remain statu quo and refuse to take the higher degrees, for the
benefit of the future generations of humanity.
... as the Adepts work harmoniously, since unity is the fundamental law of
their being, they have as it were made a division of labor, according to
which each works on the plane at the time allotted to him, for the spiritual
elevation of us all --and the process of longevity...is only the means to
the end which, far from being selfish, is the most unselfish purpose for
which a human being can labor." HPB ARTICLES II 118

"The day is approaching when the world will receive the proofs that
only ancient religions were in harmony with nature, and ancient science
embraced all that can be known." Once more the prophecy already made in
ISIS UNVEILED [ ISIS I 34 ] 22 years ago is reiterated. "Secrets long
kept may be revealed; books long forgotten and arts long time lost may be
brought out to light again; papyri and parchments of inestimable importance
will turn up in the hands of men who pretend to have unrolled them from
mummies, or stumbled upon them in buried crypts; tables and pillars, whose
sculptured revelations will stagger theologians and confound scientists, may
yet be excavated and interpreted. Who knows the possibilities of the
future? An era of disenchantment and rebuilding will soon begin--nay, has
already begun. The cycle has almost run its course; a new one is about to
begin, and the future pages of history may contain full evidence, and convey
full proof of the above." [ HPB gives, , proofs ]	"THE MIND IN
NATURE" HPB ARTICLES II 219-220

United Lodge of Theosophists

"Let "U L T" flourish on its moral worth alone. The work we have to do,
the knowledge we have to give out, depends on no other names than those of
the true Teachers, H P B and W Q J. Associates must learn to look to
Them, to point to Them and to the Masters whom They served. Nothing else
will restore the Movement. Unity is the key note of our attempt, and living
persons, if made prominent, will detract from that attempt, will be
attacked, to the injury of the Movement. So we will keep their names out of
consideration. Let the curious and (369) and the antagonistic surmise all
they want to--the really earnest will then judge by the fruits, not by
persons. Theosophy does not emanate from any society nor from any living
persons. So far as the world and all Theosophists are concerned, Theosophy
comes from H P B and W Q J, or rather, through them. So to avoid
misconceptions, we get back of living persons to the Message and the
Messengers." F.P. p. 368

"W Q J was not the "successor" of H P B; he was her Colleague and
Co-Worker who retained his body a few years longer than she remained in
hers. He was the "stone that was rejected by the builders," who desired to
pose as successors to H P B --to the confusion of all who depended on them.
The real foundation of the "successor craze" is the itch for more
instructions; this begets the hunt after anyone who will promise fresh
"revelations." What was given out by H P B, and applied by W Q J was not
and is not studied by Theosophists at large, or it would have awakened a
fuller thought and realization by the students. All the theosophical
follies are the result of ignorance, superstition and selfishness, which
knowledge alone can overcome."	F.P., p. 368-9

"Our efforts may seem inadequate, but they are in the right direction,
and "a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump." We will do what we can and
all that we know how to do, enduring the evils of the present while
attempting that which will work for greater good in the future, here a
little and there a little, thus leading the minds of Theosophists of every
degree and in every society to as broad a conception of the Philosophy as
possible. And all these efforts will be educational for us, too, for we
will have to meet all kinds of minds from ignorance to arrogance, and so
speak as to leave an impress that will stick...If anyone desires to be a
Theosophist, let him study Theosophy as it was given by those who enunciated
it. For one to accept as true what any teacher chooses to tell him, (370)
without any means given him by which to verify the statements made, or
without verifying for himself the facts alleged--is simply to believe on
blind faith, as do so many others."
F P p. 369-370

"Our own difficult task is to avoid all semblance of authority of any
kind, while being at the same time sure of our ground and not afraid to say
so...like the Founders, to give every one an opportunity to see for himself
that what we have to say is well founded. At present the initiative is in
our hands as the pioneers. We have to strike the key-note for those who
come after us; once struck, if will be followed by those who take hold.
The other will find it "too absorbing and too lofty" for them, and will not
attempt it. ... we also know we will not be left alone in the doing...we
have to give...the salient points, clear, and definite, as well as concise
in statement, so that thought shall be directed to them; to make the points
so striking that they cannot be passed over, and facts only, before the
mind, verifiable by anyone who cares enough to do so."
F.P. p 368-370

U L T Impersonality of Method :-- No Dogmas

"Theosophy has never been put forth as a Dogma, but as a relation of
facts, which have been gathered through observation and experience, which
anyone can accept or reject without condemnation or praise. One might as
well call the only exact science we use, viz., Mathematics, dogmatic or a
dogma because it is presented as an assemblage of facts which the student
can study, apply and prove for himself. Theosophy stands in exactly the
same position: a presentation of Knowledge gained through aeons of time;
it is not to be confounded with the speculations of any of its students, who
at best are subject to their personal prejudices, predilections and
weaknesses. It should also be clearly understood that all theosophical
writers or leaders--except Those who brought Theosophy to the world--are
students of more or less proficiency in the Science, and are therefore
liable to misconceptions and erroneous applications. The only possibility of
discerning such errors lies in a comparison with the Science as originally
presented." F.P., p. 406

"...As to the "good" in any presentation, it stands for itself, and is
the only reason why error or evil has any possibility of acceptance; it is
the mixture of Truth and Error that confuses and misleads the ignorant and
the unwary. Remove the error and its sequence, evil, and the Truth stands
our all the more clearly; there is no "minimizing the good" in such a
course." R.C. F P, p. 405-6

ADDENDUM

Additional comments from a letter to a friend:

"None of us can afford unverified assumptions. We can only observe that
which is at hand and seen or heard by us. All the rest is second hand. We
cannot use it unless we wish to enter the area of gossip, innuendo, etc. and
open ourselves to the unverified concepts of people influenced by whatever
others say. [ Remember how Iago influenced the thinking of Othello and
drove him mad with unfounded jealousy ?]

1.	No one induced me, or you, or any one of us to "enter ULT."
We volunteered. We pay no dues, we offer our time and attention to
Theosophical matters, expecting no returns or recognition. We are
responsible to no one but ourselves. Any gift of time or money is made
without "strings."

2.	Our continued interest, does not bind us to any ULT
location, building, or structure, we are all free. We come together because
we benefit from companionship, and conferencing, mutual comparison of the
results of our study.

The Buddha called the association of disciples that sprang up around
him 2500 years ago, the Sangha, the company of the righteous. The most
valuable work of the ULT is working to make original and pure Theosophy
available to others. It is not to interpret or divert effort from that
SOURCE to others' opinions. What individuals may do in their spare time is
their affair and has nothing to do with the ULT. Everyone's private life is
the field in which he or she makes progress towards the Goal, and shapes his
own "path." Perhaps the ULT omens the kind of association that will be
common in the 6th "Race" and 6th Round when Buddhi will have eliminated
sectional and personal "kamic" differences.

3.	ULT is, therefore, a name given to certain principles and
ideas. Do we know precisely what these are ?

We need to itemize these "principles and ideas," so that we know what they
are, for ourselves, and for use in dealing with others.

ULT regards as a side-issue anything that relates to us personally.
It takes no interest in that. In other words the ULT "ship" is coated by
the principles of its Declaration, as with a surface repellent to the
barnacles and the "drones" of useless personalities, which otherwise would
slow or divert its "impersonality."

We can all be deeply grateful to those early associates and to R. Crosbie
for framing the ULT Declaration, which divests it of any and all trappings
that relate to "organizational" methods and restrictions, which reflect the
many facets of personal opinions.

In regard to opinions, far and near. ULT can take no cognizance of those,
nor of the persons involved. I believe that it would be folly to try to
"expose" all the frailties and diversions of students, either past or
present. We cannot change those. We ought not to meddle there. It is not
our mission to do that. We have enough problems with our own personality
and its control. We ought to avoid judging any one else. This kind of
external interest divides instead of uniting.

"Authority," has been the destroyer of religions, governments,
civilizations, etc... as far back as records go. How was this done? Trust
was destroyed by gossip and secret "talky-talky."

What permanence is sensed in this rehash of past events ? All this is
"past-tense," and should have been settled directly by the parties involved
at that time. I think, your dwelling on it keeps you attached to a past
that cannot be modified. Lets live for the future, learning, and, lets
learn from past errors. Are we seeking some redress ? Are we asking for
"justice" ? Is someone to be pilloried ? Why not let Karma take care of it
? We are not competent to do that, ever ! Let those who are sinless throw
the first stone.

4.	ULT is made up of volunteers. (as said above).

None of us are competent to ask for anything for ourselves,
investigate anything in ULT, or do anything more than study, participate and
help.

If the ULT does not satisfy these needs and urges, then we can all go
elsewhere. We are free. We have been attracted to ULT and we owe its
dedication to original Theosophy far more than we can ever fully repay. It
has been for many of us a gateway to a deeper understanding and an
appreciation of the sacrifices made by HPB, WQJ and the Masters, and our
predecessors in ULT. What have we sacrificed that is so great ? Any
ambition on our part is proof we are not ready.

5.	ULT affords ample opportunity for study and work on the
teachings and principles of Theosophy.

We decide on the areas of study that appeal to us, and we do that
independently and for ourselves. No one "runs" the ULT. We all try to
support the only body that is at present independent of personal biases as a
body, although the students in their personal lives may have as many
opinions and views as there are numbers involved. Principles are stable,
opinions are not.

Opinions are supposed to be dropped when we enter the doors of the ULT
"work-place." There we work for others. Karma will take care of our faults
and foibles. No one else is competent to decide on the right or wrong of
our motives for speaking and acting. Only principles can be discussed. All
personal applications are void there. We have to be generous to all others,
regardless of how we may personally feel about them. We know that our
feelings constantly change and are unreliable. They are : "Difficult to
control," like the "horses" that drew the chariot of Arjuna and Krishna."

The ULT exists as an impersonal forum for Theosophical study. No more. It
is further limited to the study and promulgation of that Theosophy which
comes directly from HPB and WQJ-- not from anyone else, and those who desire
that, will have to find a place to discuss side-issues elsewhere. It is the
ideas, and not the personalities which are important.

Can we not always say to ourselves: What does HPB, WQJ say on this ? All
dissentions are matters of personal opinion, and in 5, 10, or 100 years from
now no one will know of them, nor care about them. They will look back and
ask who was true and worked to keep it alive ? Can we afford to find our
names missing from the Akasic records then?

All this business of views and feelings vanish when we take the long-term
view of life. We are trying to emphasize in our work impersonal principles.
Ours is the responsibility to see that nothing that we say or do detracts
from those ways of working and acting, as far as we are able. This is a
useful way of holding our personality in check.

6.	Good work, useful work, by any individual comes from
profound study.

A "Theosophical Education" is our first duty and need. Both the "Heart" and
the "Head" Doctrines are available. The "Heart" has to give the "Head"
living in the "world," stability, rooted in the infinite and the immortal.

7.	In ULT, no one tells anyone what to study, or where to
study, or when to study, or how to study.

Its meetings afford an impersonal experience in study that can be shared, by
those who are interested in reviewing their conclusions and making use of
the experience of their brothers and sisters. Acceptance, use, or rejection
of those is again, a matter of individual choice. No rules are made, nor
are "norms" established. The impersonal integrity of ULT is sustained
always.

If there is dissent and grumbling:

1st, it may not be gossiped about. Other students should
refuse to listen. The individual harboring such, ought to be reminded of
his duty to clear his differences direct with those whom he disagrees with.
That is where our responsibility enters. We are obliged to refuse to listen
to opinions and gossip about others.

2nd. it is solely a matter between the dissenter or the
grumbler, and the person with whom he or she has differences. A tendency to
gossip implies a personality seeking support on a personal matter, or it may
denote a desire for retaliation. Neither implies Theosophical practice.

It is polluting to listen to anyone who says ill of another in their
absence. It is cowardly. If we listen, answer, or carry the misinformation
to others we participate in someone else's evil karma.

The fundamental weakness of the case and the personal fear of the
challenger, requires him to, secretly at first, then openly, if he dares,
broadcast facts about supposed "errors" so that a "case" can be "built up."
This is seen all the time in politics, and there even deliberate lies can be
circulated as a "smear campaign." It is to avoid just such a situation that
ULT Declaration precludes all that.

8.	In ULT we have only one right. It is the right to not
participate. We can leave.

The ULT owes us nothing. We have no claims on it. We decide each moment
whether to support it or to leave it. But where else in the world known to
us, is Theosophy discussed, and a sincere attempt by the "few" to carry it
into action ?

9.	In ULT there can be no influencing or coercing of others.
We focus on Theosophy. The "way to reach the Goal will vary with the
pilgrims."

No one but the free individual decides that. It is a right that cannot be
abridged by anyone. There are no committees or officers or "guide-lines"
for work and mutual behavior. No one can be a "leader." No one can
abrogate the freedom of others by disrupting orderly work that lies within
the purview of the declared purposes of ULT.

This is the most wonderful assistance in keeping our personality under
leash. We can only do what others permit us to do in ULT. It teaches us
how to work with others. It also teaches us the value of trust. It is an
exemplification in practice of the principle: "And that power which the
disciple shall covet is that which shall make him appear as nothing in the
eyes of men." [ Light on the Path, p. 4 ] It is, apparently the area of
exercise and practice where the "yogi" in embryo -- you and I -- learns to
truly assist by "performing those acts seen to be desirable in another
yogi's mind." [ LETTERS, WQJ ]

10.	The ULT DECLARATION defines ideal and impersonal
responsibilities. All duties are self-imposed. These two:
responsibilities and duties, are distinctly different.

The ULT is composed of people--and each has their own internal
struggle with their self-formed personalities, its talents and quirks. ULT
is however an area where the personalities are held severely in check.

No "attack" or "exposure" can, as such, destroy or restructure ULT, so long
as the Declaration is used, studied and applied. The individual who makes
accusations, and feeds disruptive gossip soon leaves and disappears and is
forgotten. The ULT continues.

11.	There are many aspects of ULT work which need time and
concentration from volunteer associates so that mundane affairs can be
handled.

This will be found to include, generally, but not limited to :
correspondence; cleaning the Lodge rooms; advertising the meetings;
publishing books, pamphlets and a program of local activities; editing a
magazine so that those who are in remote places are contacted if they
desire; accounting for donations and expenditures as required by the law;
complying with such laws as may pertain to maintaining assembly locations or
rooms; opening and maintaining a library; etc... These are all
opportunities for ULT volunteers to work in and through, when a need exists,
and cooperation is served. They are however, side-issues. They are only
undertaken out of view that energy spent by individuals in that work enables
Theosophy to be more widely broadcast. No one need apply, or demand any
kind of work, but he can offer help.

12.	The ULT sets no criteria from time to time as to what is
Theosophy or what is not. It does limit itself to the studying and
broadcasting the teachings of Theosophy as found in the writings of HPB and
WQJ.

ULT is not in the world to give a forum for individual views of what
Theosophy is, or how to work for it, unless they are in line with those
already covered by those universal and impersonal principles contained in
the ULT Declaration. No one other than HPB and WQJ can stand as "bridges,"
or "filters" between us and Theosophy, nor, need we divert our respect for
them and the Masters, on whom, finally, the whole Movement depends.

13.	Personal traits are discouraged at ULT, especially those
that are disturbing to the study of Theosophy, such as procrastination,
inaccuracy, unreliability, and personal opinions, all of which discourage
brotherhood.

The purpose of existence for ULT is that it affords among its associates an
opportunity to define, each to themselves, those traits of personality that
they can control. They, alone, know of, and can appeal to, their
Individuality to become active, through the self-purification of their
personal lives. A subdued and well-controlled personality is therefore our
goal. We alone have the power to do this. It is done from within. All
appearances are deceiving.

14. Any responsibility assumed in ULT represents many years of
impersonal and unselfish work, dedicated to the needs of others.

15.	No one may ask for any responsibility, but when a need is
seen or sensed, assistance can be offered. Acceptance or implementation is
not to be expected or demanded. ULT offers no "rewards," or "recognition."

16.	ULT, as an association of volunteers is amorphous. It can
have no "relations" with other organizations. Its DECLARATION precludes
this. An associate of ULT is welcome at all ULT Lodges. No associates are
"local."

17.	ULTers, to the extent that they have time and are able, as
individuals, may participate in any activity that their conscience permits.
They are not responsible or answerable to "ULT" or to any other associate.

18.	Gossip about others, their presumed attitudes, knowledge,
devotion, performance, etc... are attempts to destroy unity anywhere,
including ULT.

It would be wise to change away from such personal considerations to
impersonal and universal concepts. Why not look into Nature around us, and
see if we cannot find the working of the Three Fundamentals there:

The Spiritual Soul--which is One with the ABSOLUTE, incarnates for the
benefit of the personality and its elements ( skandhas, "little-lives,"
monadic-essence, force-fields, "sheaths," atomic entities--whatever the
designation used ) now under the guidance of a mind, a self-conscious
entity, us, so they can have the benefit of living and working with an
intelligence, older and wiser, that operates as a "father" to assist them
because of its greater experience. This assistance is and cannot be an
"iron hand" that forces compliance with a superior will--that would be
misapplication of knowledge. But, the careful and generous application of
persuasion, and an induction of educative self-reliance in them, according
to their needs and at their level of understanding. Is this not precisely
what Theosophy does in its being diffused to the "masses ?"

It is expected, in the economy of Nature, and under the law of Karma, that
we will assist them, without causing additional delay and hindrance, in
their evolution towards their eventual individuality and independence, and
thus they may eventually rise to become "men-minds" in their turn. It is
for
us, our duty to protect and help those, and safeguard their integrity.

Contention

We cannot do this by contention. Harmony, dynamic harmony, is the on-going
force that rules the Universe. Every being has its place, we are here to
see that we do not lose our hard-won "place" in this economy of the whole.
If we deny the accuracy of such a wonderful view, we only delay ourselves
and the rest of living sensitive Nature. Adverse Karma results from that.

" It is a contest of smiles if we only know our business."

Where does contention reside other than in the sphere of opinion ? Opinion
arises from personal views. The intelligence that we call personality is
not yet wise. Part of our work as the Spiritual Soul in incarnation, is to
encourage the embodied soul, the feeling-mind, to become wise. This is the
most difficult and delicate of works. It is remodeling our house, while we
live in it. We have to use the materials already bent and shaped into uses
by us, and improve them. We have to show them the reasonableness of the
change, thus educating them into developing in themselves the mental
faculty. In Transactions, HPB (p. 23-4) speaks of those entities which we
look on as the hosts of the Dhyan Chohans, and then leads us to see that
they incarnate presently, as men, to work at this level of materiality. I
would conclude that in earlier times and ages, we were them, and have for
the moment forgotten our real selves, and are laboriously regaining that
knowledge, while "raising the whole mass of manifested matter up to the
nature and stature of conscious good-hood." Ocean. p. 60.

19.	Every ULT Lodge endeavors to present an opportunity for the
same kind of dependence/independence under Karma. So apparently, on a
larger scale, do "races" and "nations" in the vast "body" of entities that
make up our Earth in its evolutionary cycles, and so on.

Personality and Individuality

We need to make a clear distinction between our personal natures, and our
immortal Individual natures. The personal changes like a weather cock,
blown around by the winds of emotion. The Individuality remains firm and
unmoved in its immortal condition as the One Consciousness. [ Gita Notes,
p. 98-9 ] In view of our own immortality, and of the great goal we aspire
to, we cannot afford to be distracted by the way in which we presently feel
about things. Always try to take the long-view.

Attacks on Theosophy or HPB:

Alerting others to such is important. The time factor is also important.
Advice to others of how these can be dealt with is important, the whole
matter has to be exposed. But the response then becomes a matter of
individual responsibility and cannot be pushed or urged into action. This
gives none of us the right or the responsibility of "exposing" publicly what
we may feel may be wrong with any one or anything else. Complaints, as said
above, are to be solved promptly and personally, direct with those with whom
we have differences. No third parties need be involved.

Technology

If accurate and true, it has been called "Western Esotericism." Its
parentage is that materialism which freed the masses of men and women,
historically, from theological nonsense, "authority," and domination.
However it is tainted with the idea that there can be nothing beyond the
material rind.

Although constantly refined instrumentation has in the last 75 years, pushed
the barriers of measurement both ways to an almost infinite extent: into
smaller as well as larger limits, it still remains to be seen as the
operation of various scales of intelligence. HPB and the Masters in the S D
predicted this change. Mr. Judge reminds us in Letters, p. 68, that HPB
"came to change the Manas and the Buddhi of the race." Einstein, Plank,
Sheldrake, Margulis, and others are doing it. We have a whole roster of
such evidence.

On-line	has value, but needs discrimination. There is a vast and
overwhelming mass of information (and opinions) pouring in all the time.
How much is fact, and how much is opinion or speculation ? Our task is to
winnow all this without getting swamped in details that lead to waste of
time and dead-ends.

In ULT, at least, we have the Three Fundamentals and the Three Objects, and
the Seven Principles in Man and Nature to serve as a basis for answering.

Also HPB gives in the Key the Four Golden Links: Universal Unity and
Causation, Human Solidarity, Karma, and Reincarnation.

If we develop all responses based on those facts, and have a good knowledge
of Theosophical History, we can handle almost any question. It is calumny,
slander and innuendo that have to be exposed for their baseness and
cowardice. If sources and proofs are asked for, and not provided, this has
to be exposed. There is no stronger or more potent weapon. Like all good
swords it has 2 edges, so the user has to be most careful and skilled.

Five Questions

One should never forget to use the five W's: Who, When, Where, What, Why
and 6th: How ? Of these the Why is the most valuable. Hypotheses are
evolved to enable new facts to fit into older models. Revision is slow but
steady.

All that we may have learned from Theosophy could probably be reduced to
seven sentences, seven Key Ideas. Can they be identified ? Brotherhood is
the final and single word that epitomizes all the rest.

Science and Wholeness

Now, what will happen to these scientific constructs the various hypotheses,
when now confronted with a deeper view of the holistic nature of the real
structure of the Universe, and evolution therein as presented by Theosophy.
You and I and most others have to unlearn so much that has been given to us
as education, and which limits our vision.

For instance, according to Science the "solid matter" we were made familiar
with, is now seen to be the intelligent aggregation of minute force-fields
of an electro-magnetic nature, which "somehow" (Karma says the Theosophist)
come together to form atoms, cells, crystals, plants, animals and finally
us, as mind-men. What their relative intelligence and stage of evolution
is, no one can define yet, since the concepts of consciousness remain to be
developed, and unfortunately Theosophical doctrines are still unacceptable.
When Patanjali is recognized again as the Master Psychologist, we will have
some advance in understanding and treating Man.

Suppose that all that we call the "little lives," or the skandhas, are
embryonic humans, undergoing evolution while under the "control" and
"assistance" of more advanced minds, that they and everything within our
horizon of sensing is a cross section of many types of
"immortals"--atoms--perpetual motion machines, of which intelligence is a
component. Once we, now feeling-minds, were like them; and those that we
today call our "Masters," were at one time humans like we are now. The
whole process of individual sensitive and all-encompassing evolution is
Universe-wide. This occurs as what we call evolution proceeds. But, it is
an evolution where no entity is unimportant or can be carelessly excluded,
or neglected.

Perfection

There is no final end to perfectibility. Now this requires from us, each of
us, a mind-stretching leap to grasp far beyond our limited one-life
experience, and to realize that all the detail that we have from
Theosophical doctrines, the Three Fundamentals, the 7 Principles of Man,
Karma, Reincarnation, Universal Unity, Human Solidarity, Sleep, Dreams,
After-Death States, etc...Perfection as a Goal--all that and more on planes
we are still unable to penetrate or sense, is a fragmentary description of
the reality of the Whole.

A further consideration is that if all emanate from the ONE SOURCE, under
the impulsion of the Causeless Cause, we are innately brothers, and are also
"perfect" in our innermost nature. There is to be found the ever present
eternal, and immortal HIGHER SELF (Atma-Buddhi). Perfection then requires
that the "outer" consciousness in contact with diversity alter its
orientation, and seek the inward center where peace, understanding, wisdom,
compassion and true discrimination reside.

Free Access	This is outside the ULT purview, since it is limited
to Theosophy as found in the writings of HPB and WQJ.

If this "free access" to opinions and contention is proposed to be
published, then it cannot be distributed or used in ULT. Under the
Declaration, there is no place for it.

The ULT platform and its book-tables cannot be used as a forum for
debate, or the exercise of the so-called "democratic process." If anything
you might describe ULT as "patriarchal." It is for this reason I draw your
attention to the Declaration, since that covers all the parameters of work
and reason for existence. The ULT does not operate on a voting system,
where a 51 % majority shuts our opposition and imposes autocratic rule and
methods. No, that is what ULT is designed to avoid entirely. To seek to
re-impose it there is foolhardy and ridiculous, and will certainly be
resisted by all free-thinking associates. Lets spend our time on Theosophy,
and let time heal all wounds, if any.

Individual Lodges	ULT has centers, but the Lodge is One, not
many. Any associate is automatically an associate of all ULT Lodges.
Problems in individual Lodges can only be resolved by the use of impersonal
and universal principles. These should be identified. I try to place some
of these, as I have found, or see them, before you.

If everyone has good-will for all the rest, and is not working for
himself, then everything becomes "a contest of smiles," instead of those
"hurt feelings" you referred to.

Hurt Feelings

Feelings belong to the emotional, kamic nature, not the impersonal Divine
Self of All. If feelings have been hurt, don't you think it is the
immediate duty of the one who did the hurting to resolve the problem, even
if means to part as friends with a difference that cannot be resolved ? It
is exactly in that area that we have to help each other. But, principles
cannot be "bent" or else everything begins to topple and dissolve and
disappear, and "ULT" will be empty.

To try "all methods under the Sun" is an interesting phrase, because it
indicates that those who are so oriented, whether in ULT or not, may be
forgetting THEOSOPHY and looking for the kind of "results" they think are
evidence of success. Why not find out how to present Theosophy, simply and
clearly. What methods "under the Sun" are truly valuable ? That needs to
be precised. No sense scattering seeds on infertile and hostile ground !
Energy has to be concentrated not wasted. Simplicity and accuracy are the
keys.

Language Change

We do have a great need to know about true psychology.

Modern jargon can be obstructive to clear thought and to wisdom. for
instance there is no clear distinction between the "feeling" man, the
"believing" man, and the "thinking" man. Thinking as a process is not made
precise. Disentangling feelings from thoughts is not clear. The fact that
there is a steady and clear power of consciousness (called vaguely "I," or
"me.") shows the existence in each of us of something that Theosophy calls
the Spiritual-Soul which is changeless and immortal. Listen to how often
people will say "I feel" -- this is an indication of uncertainty, which only
the focused mind can solve. Let us show that there is firm and unshakable
wisdom, knowledge and order to be secured, which, being universal and
eternal is sure.

Simplicity and honesty are needed. The idiom of truth is logical sincerity.
None of us are of that caliber of linguists, that we can decide to alter the
presentation of the original teachings.

ULT is dedicated to their diffusion.

That is our present task. We are not asked to translate as though we knew
as much as the Teachers did. But in dealing with others we can find out
their mind level and then make the principles of Theosophy accessible to
them by putting it in their language. We have first to question, using the
wise Platonic method. If we can educe the wisdom that is inherent in all
persons, we will have awakened them to the study of themselves. No one can
"teach" another, but each can open doors and windows !

The Future

The Masters know what will be happening to all of us. They can read our
karmic records, and the Akasic records where Karma traces the results of all
causal acts and thoughts. They hope that we will have the wisdom to steer
free of the confusions of our days and hew to the line traced for us in
terms of keeping Theosophy alive for the future. This development of trust
in the Law, and in Theosophical doctrines is, for us, the test which we are
undergoing.

Every movement in the past: Mysteries, Academies, Groves, Neo-Platonism,
Gnostics, Alchemists, Theurgists, Pythagoreans, Reformation, Essenes,
Nazarenes, Therapeutae, Rosicrucianism, Fratres Lucis, Templars, Sufis,
Masons, Free-Masons, etc..., all show the touch at source of the profound
and universal Wisdom-Religion. The vital continuity has always suffered on
the physical plane, while remaining unaffected on the spiritual plane. Our
Theosophy originates there.

HPB pleaded with us to "bridge the gap" between centuries. Judge averred
that HPB would be the One to return to continue Her work. Has this
happened? Will it happen ? Have we the wisdom to be ready, and the
humility to assist as needed ? We alone can answer these questions. They
are constantly in my mind.

Our job is to spread Theosophy and not to dignify any of its exponents. I
can think of at least a dozen persons, in the last 60 years that I have
known, and watched working with ULT, who deserve the highest praise--but ULT
platform and its book-tables are not the place for noticing their work.

The fact that pure Theosophy is still available is their reward. The claim
of HPB and WQJ to our respect exceeds our ability to qualify them or
apostrophe. We need to get rid of this enchantment with personalities and
get on with the work of spreading Theosophy. All else is time wasted. Who,
but us, cares at all for our hurt feelings ! Why are they hurt ? Who is
responsible for the response evoked ? What have we omitted to foresee ?
Let us agree that in all cases the faults are largely our own, and we will
have made a tremendous step to rectifying things. It is evidence to us of
their limited wisdom. Any time that there is argument, it is indicative of
uncertainty.

Only the lower mind argues. The Higher Mind does not. It knows what is
true and valuable, and where our duty lies. The lower mind is constantly
wavering.

There are no "forbidden" ideas, but there are a lot of unnecessary ones.
Discrimination is the key to all this. Where does the power to discriminate
arise?

Brotherhood is fostered, as Judge and HPB did, by focusing on principles and
work derived from these, not from a discussion of personalities. The
magazines they edited focused on the philosophy, and not on people. Why ?

The proof of its value lies in its integrity and longevity, which has
exceeded that of any of the "Theosophical Societies" including the original
"T S," and the "T S in A," both of which have passed through many changes in
names and objects. ULT remains with the same basis in active effect.

Hi Dallas and all,

I am not in anyway suggesting a prescribed way of studying for
individuals.

I think the issues I am addressing here relate more to the Adyar
society as it has had issues regarding what is and isn't appropriate
for lodges and branches to be venue for.

Some say they should allow anything and anything that loosely fits
being called 'theosophy'.

For example would a Paul Twitchell (Ekankar) study group be allowed
in a theosophical centre?

If people come in off the street they may leave thinking this then
represents theosophical teachings.

Healing groups have been another touchy issue many members want to
use lodges as hands on healing venues.
Are the healers qualified and what if someone has kundalini
prematurely aroused as a result ?

Is this appropriate use of a theosophical venue?

The big question is if the parameters for what is and isn't
appropriate material for study in a theosophical centre is so wide
the TS will simply become some kind of new age society with no
definable reason for being.

(unless that is its reason for being?)

Is this what the founders intended?

To say the society is there to promote the 1st object is without
doubt true however this leaves the doors wide open to lodges being
taken over by all sorts of different activities.
So the issue is more related to what is appropriate use of
theosophical society lodges.

Are they healing centres?

Are they yoga centres?

Are the Jungian psychology centres?

Are they psychic development centres?

This has been the source of endless bum fighting in branches and imo
wastes valuable resources and time.

Anyone who's been on a TS committee will be able to relate to this as
being a problem.

What people do outside the Branch however is their own affair and not
the business of any anyone.

We are of course at liberty to pursue any line we may choose to.

I don't know if ULT or Pasadena go through these same issues but it
has been an ongoing issue in the Adyar society.

I'd be interested to here what other think on this.

Before the advent of Internet mail lists, it was very difficult for those
interested in theosophy and belonging to any organization or no
organization to "meet" and discuss issues of interest. It all changed with
the advent of Internet.

The first e-mail list theos-l was launched by a member of TSA and was quite
active ( and still active even though not as much as theos-world) and
provided a forum for everyone across the world to talk about issues of
common *theosophical* interest. By the way I learnt about theos-l not from
any organization (those days there were few search engines) - I don't think
organizations looked favorably on the list because no one could control
them -- organizational leaders are used to be in control of flow of
information to its members (and they saw it as their duty, perhaps) and
this medium is so foreign that while I suspect they were reading the msgs
(perhaps even today) but none of them participated in any discussions -- It
was a casual teleconversation that led me to the theos-l.

Even today we have rarely seen any of the organizational leadership elected
or appointed -- participating in any of the un-moderated (uncensored)
lists. This makes one wonder whether any of them even today understand the
potential power of Internet and what it can do to further theosophy, even
though I have seen some of the organizational leaders talk a lot about
Internet. It is quite understandable since much of the top leadership are
old and grew up in pre-Internet era.

As I see it, with the coming generation growing up in Internet "culture",
it is very likely that maillists such as this supplanting the traditional
organizations for furthering theosophy, and traditional organizations being
relegated to the role of publishing and holding copyrights and other
property and assets.

Personally speaking, I interact with the "theosophists" on a daily basis
here and much more than what I do with local branch members and am very
happy with the situation.

One of the problems that all organizations face with Internet is that there
are facts and rumors - past and present - that organizational leaders do
not want to come out or discussed. Internet, being an uncensored medium
allows this to happen and there is nothing anyone can do about it, other
than face the reality and put up with it. This is an issue that
organizational leadership needs to address sooner or later head-on for the
best interests of the organization and theosophy.
