There's a good reason why the Lodges are independent (or at least supposed to be). People learn better if they are taught in terms they can understand. True, theosophical lodges should not be about psychic fairs, but the people who would be interested in Theosophy who have not yet found out about it are often attracted to things such as psychic fairs. True, most of the people attending are looking for somebody to tell them the Truth(tm), and they're not going to find it (unless it's an Alice Bailey dominated Lodge, in which case, the Lodge members will be more than happy to tell everybody the One and Only Truth That Supersedes All Others You Dirty Adyar Idiots(tm)). However, those who are interested in finding for themselves will find like minded people with whom they can associate.

You ask some great questions, thanks for your comments. Well my personal "opinion" is a Theosophical Society Lodge or Center should not be a "Psychic Fair" which is a very popular thing here in the USA, many are scheduled, usually week-ends at leased facilities and get good traffic of both curious and serious individuals. They can walk the booths and investigate all the "New Age" idiosyncracies and practices collecting bags full of flyers and business cards and such. All this is "Off the Purpose Lines of the intent of a Theosophical Lodge Center even though the topics may be subjects of Guest Lectures and Members may have proclivities of interest individually amongst themselves. It seems to me that the "Charter" is the determinator that defines the Purpose.
