When did the Masters stop speaking?

The question of when communications with the Masters ceased (and why) as
far as Adyar is concerned is an interesting one. The history of such
communications in Theosophical groups apart from Adyar is a different one
(and in some communications have a longer history).
Certainly there were claims of Mahatmic communications up to Arundale,
and possibly Jinarajadasa. There is some evidence of such communications
during Sri Ram's time: this is found in his statements in ES documents.
It would seem that "official" communications ceased thereafter, although
some individuals (notably Hodson) claimed to be in contact with the
Masters. Hodson's published "ocult diaries" give details of this but it
is unclear how the Adyar authorities regarded Hodson's "communications".
Various other individuals associated with Adyar have claimed to be in
communication with the Masters; the wife of one prominent Theosophist is
said to be currently a recipient of such messages.
Any suggestions as to when and why the Masters stopped speaking to Adyar?
Is there an official explanation for the mahatmic silence?
