True, but the deeper meaning was that he was an antinomian, which is
one of numerous reasuns to believe he studied in Egypt. The
underlying idea of the antinomians was that all the Jewish ritual
stuff had an esoteric meaning, and that the literal observance was
not important and even displayed ignorance of the deeper
significance. Philo of Alexandria, who was an eminent student of the
esoteric hypothesis, wrote against antinomianism in one of his books,
for which reason it is apparent it started at least by the beginning
of the first century, probably long before. The point was not merely
to eat with unwashed hands but to flout the ceremonial rules
regarding eating. J also made a point of healing on the sabbath,
etc., all of which was part of the antinomian thing.
