Two comments:

Before the Zionist movement was started, the people of the Diaspora 
called themselves people of Israel, even though Israel as a country 
had ceased to exist in Roman times/

Second, when the ancients made contact with Greek thought they were 
incluned to make invidious comparisons with the OT. In due time they 
decided Moses had a "secret doctrine" which was much more profound 
than the surface meaning of the OT and that Plato had stolen this and 
put it in his dialogues. Therefore Moses was the teacher and 
superior of Plato. This was the root of the later Kabbalah. It was 
also considered that Pythagoras was the student of Ezekiel. I am not 
saying that any of this was true, only that it was believed to be 
true. So Kabbalah comes from Plato, who got his ideas from 
Pythagoras, who according to some legends studied in India. I think 
that is how Blavatsky traced from Kabbalah to India, through several 
intermediaries.
