Erica,
It is a very controversial film and like every
controversial film it admits many readings. Those
viewers focusing on the portrayal of the Pharisees'
leaders will automatically accuse the film of
anti-Semitic.
Those focusing on the Roman soldiers in the
exasperatingly long torture scene, will say that it is
a sado-masochist, "snuff", film.
In the end, each one will probably respond to it
subjectively. In spite of the sea of blood,
inacuracies and poetic licence with the gospel story,
what stood out for me in the film was this man
immersing himself in a suffering beyond all
comprehension and emerging out of it untainted by the
least desire for revenge or hatred.
