Although it may sound too categorical and dogmatic,
the theosophical teaching does identify Atma (the true
Self) with wisdom, as in the following passage from
"Practical Occultism":

"ATMA-VIDYA, a term which is translated simply
“knowledge of the Soul,” true Wisdom by the
Orientalists, but which means far more."
certainly.

In Vedanta, for example, Atma is defined as pure,
unconditioned consciousness, free from any taint of
separateness. It is the "One without a second". HPB
also mentions that the "I"-sense, the daily me, is
centered in kama-manas, the desire-mind. Every
identification with form, name, personal history,
spiritual "status", etc. naturally come from this
level of our being, including impressions about "past
lives". Atma has no past, no future, as it is the
eternal now.
Atma, as I have seen it defined (hah hah), is that expression of the One which individualizes as a monad, yet is consciously one with the One. Although it has no past nor future, it manifests as us within the fabric of time/space for its own purpose. That purpose has been defined ( satisfactorily to me, anyway) by Blavatsky, Bailey, and my own Master as "evolution of Spirit through form and substance"...whatever such terms may invoke.

In my posting I used the expressions "perhaps" and "it
is possible". They were intended to show that my
opinion on these subjects is tentative. But these
words are also expressions of a mantra I find very
useful (and which I try to repeat on a daily basis):
"I may be wrong."
That's a wise pov on the general face of it.
To reiterate, in my experience, Atma is our personalized "atom" of consciousness which does grow in conscious experience and performance. That growth is achieved in the field of mind, acting in form.
These concepts are not my discovery, rather I concur with them. In fact, I believe the esoteric teachings of Christ are all about that.
In any case, our "personal", for lack of a better term- Atma reincarnates here on this planet as each of us. We have longstanding relationships with others at all levels of energic expression, imo. If an advanced soul says he/she was a certain personality and another person was a different one, it could theoretically open up a can of ego-worms to deal with- but I wouldn't categorically limit what an advanced or wise person will or will not do in such a scenario.

regards-

Ali
