Re: [bn-study] Theosophical Teachings vs. Theosophical Movement

To Sufi, Dallas, Dennis, Reed, and everyone else interested,

With reference to my previous contribution on this Subject -- I wish to make
the following correction, and clarify some of the history behind the theory of
ABC that may be interesting to serious students of theosophy (especially
those waiting for the new "Messenger," or thinking that he hasn't already been
here and gone. :-)

The name of the scientist who first taught me (beginning around 1975 and
lasting until around 1984) about the scientific connection between mind,
consciousness, and the cutting edge theories of modern physics, up to the level of
Superstrings and M-branes, which completely synthesizes quantum and relativity
theories (as also explained and modeled in my ABC theory**, which also relates
directly with the theosophical metaphysics) -- should be spelled, Dr. Philip
Sebastian Perchion. (NOT "Percheron")

As I said before, from what I know after a long and close friendship with
him, this man, known as "Doc Perch" to his friends, had been instrumental in the
design of the trigger mechanism for the Hiroshima A-bomb (which also blew his
mind by loading him with a lot of bad karma) -- and was a graduate of MIT with
a doctorate degree in physics and chemistry. His uncle was Dr. Philip
Sebastian, who was (as part of the Manhattan Project during WW2) a colleague of
Enrico Fermi, Robert Oppenheimer, and Albert Einstein, and the half brother of
Georgi Ivanovich Gurjieff, the famous Master and mystic who wrote "Beelzebub's
Tales to His Grandson." By the way, Dr. Perchion assisted with background
information for the science and the Secret Doctrine section of Sylvia Cranston's
biography of HPB.

Before he died, Dr. Perchion (also being an initiated Lama of the Nyingmapa,
and completely familiar with some of the teachings in the Kiu Te, namely the
"Book of the Golden Precepts") demonstrated to me that he had Adept control of
the astral realm and could perform psychic phenomena such as "action at a
distance" by influencing the function of electronic equipment, such as switches
and transistor gates, at distances as great as from Jersey City (where he lived)
to New York City (where I lived).

As an example of this capability... Late one night, around 1982, he phoned
and told me he was piqued with the Telephone Company who had overcharged his
business phone, but refused to acknowledge their error... And that, in a few
hours, using what he called his "cold rage technique" (usually said with an
enigmatic smile) he was going to teach "them and all the rest of the greedy money
grubbers a lesson they wouldn't forget." He said I would hear about it on the
TV or radio news the following day, and he hung up. (I should also mention here
that Doc Perch had a kind of child like sense of humor -- much like the
prankishness of Dr. Feynman, whom he had worked with on the Manhattan Project, and
possibly, like the pixyish humor they say HPB had. :-)

The next morning it was all over the News channels that the New York Stock
Exchange had to delay opening for 3-4 hours because the telephone central office
exchange in lower Manhattan had a power outage that short circuited their
emergency power supply. (Talk about prophesy and fulfillment... This convincing
psychic act, out of pure impishness, certainly takes the cake. :-)

Unfortunately (although it served to further convince me of his psychic
powers) I may also have indirectly contributed to this bit of sabotage... Since,
when he questioned me earlier -- I told him (as a former central office wire
chief in the US Army) how an entire telephone exchange could be temporarily shut
down. By overloading and shorting out the batteries of such a DC dependent
system through the blocking or diverting the output of one vacuum tube grid or
plate in an old fashioned electronic power control relay (or one transistor in
a modern digital switch). I also remember telling him it might take a few
hours for a repairman to trace the trouble, replace the burned out transistor or
vacuum tube circuit, and recharge the system. I never imagined he would use
that information in one of his psychic tricks. (Of course, no one could have
gotten physically hurt from such a prank, so I don't feel any guilt over it.
:-)

He apologized later for getting me involved in his "white magic"... That, he
said, was mainly done to convince me that he knew what he was talking about
during the two or three hours each night -- when he called me on the phone (at
least three times a week) to, uninterruptedly (except for an occasional
question) drone in my ear everything he knew about post modern physics, from
zero-point-instants, quarks and atoms, to hyperspace fields, quasars, black holes and
wormholes (much of which, incidentally, was contradictory to what I had been
taught in college more than 30 years earlier) -- as well as load me with much
esoteric Tantric magic and the details of the alignment of psychic paths for
activating and controlling the siddhis that he learned as a Nyingmapa. (That,
incidentally, I made no attempt to practice, then or since, on the advice of
both Perch and HPB, along with Gopi Krishna and others who .)

Also, about one day every week, he would come into the city and we would
spend many hours sitting or walking in Central Park -- (probably on some of the
same benches and paths, by the way, that HPB sat and walked with WQJ).

We spent this time talking about modern science and its relation to
metaphysics, and looking up references in the Secret Doctrine. (With occasional forays
into what two curious middle aged guys usually do while hanging out in the Big
Apple -- such as wandering through Museums, libraries, and the like, and
sometimes, just watching the girls go by. :-) Doc's semi-blindness, by the way,
only affected his central vision (due to the flash of the Trinity test
A-bomb)... So, he could partially see, peripherally -- although it was difficult for
him to read.

Doc Perch, who apparently, during this time, only spoke about such things to
me (and several other students with more or less scientific background or
interest than myself) had the unique ability to explain all that advanced physics
(without resort to mathematics) using interesting word analogies and verbal
pictures only. This analogous method of teaching, for at least some period of
the time that my ear was glued to the phone during his daily dronings, would
keep me from falling asleep...

For example, when he first started his teaching, he pictured our experiential
space-time continuum as an endless blanket woven (as individual strings of
its warp and weft) out of individual dimensionless lines of positive and
negative energy. (Thus, assuring that these opposing forces would always be in
balance at every point on the blanket.) This blanket had wrinkles in it, and each
wrinkle was also wrinkled, and had wrinkles in them. The biggest wrinkles he
said represented galaxies, the next smaller represented star systems, the next,
planets, etc... With the smallest wrinkles -- after those getting smaller and
smaller representing bodies, cells, molecules, atoms, fundamental particles,
quarks, etc. -- ending finally, in the wrinkles and loops of the primal energy
"strings" themselves.

[Can we see how that implies that cosmic intelligence or universal
information could be carried holographically in the vibrational wave patterns of the
strings and also on the waves of the wrinkles? And, also doesn't this conform
with HPB's teaching that everything in the universe is electrical in nature and
based on the laws of cycles and periodicity?]

He also said, going deeper, to imagine this blanket as an endless surface
that circled around its center to form a sphere that was so large that any
section of it would appear to be flat to any observer from any point on it. And, as
this sphere expanded, all the largest wrinkles would seem to any observer to
be moving away from each other. He also said to imagine the lines of positive
and negative energy (the warp and weft of the blanket) each converging at
opposite zero-points (black holes? poles?) on the surface of the sphere, and by
turning inward, eventually, following a twisting cyclic path -- joining with
each other at the zero-point center of the spherical blanket, and, in the
process, forming two additional inner spheres, like bubbles within a bubble. He
said to picture this ("as above, so below") as analogous to the magnetic lines of
energy that encircles the Earth, entering and exiting at its poles and
crossing through the zero-point at its center (which was where those opposing lines
of force appear to effectively originate from). We can picture this by
examining the symbolic cross sectional diagrams of the initial universal field
involution's at:
http://users.aol.com/uniwldarts/uniworld.artisans.guild/chakrafield.html
http://users.aol.com/leonmaurer/Invlutionfldmirror2.gif

How's that for a word picture that -- through a further extension of this
model, along with a subtle understanding of how spherical fields of consciousness
can be both coadunate (in the same place) but not consubstantial (of same
density) --- can take us straight back to the primal beginning or Tai Chi (a void
zero-point singularity surrounded by endlessly circulating abstract positive
and negative forces in closed circles with no beginning and no end). And,
lead to a direct intuitive understanding of not only the genesis of the seven
fold Cosmic fields, and their relationships with the hierarchies of cosmic
consciousness focussed at their zero-points, but also of the fundamental roots of
both karma and reincarnation?

Of course, the real involution and evolution of the universal fields that
ultimately resolves into our visible 4-dimensional space time universe (only
partially explained by this blanket model) -- is much more subtle and complex than
that. And, although it can be visualized symbolically and understood to a
certain degree by means of the above model -- (as there is really no "inside "
and "outside," since we can see that the lines of force are both inside and
outside of our "blanket" of space-time) -- it can only be fully realized in the
deepest meditation... When we can center our individual awareness in the
zero-point-instant, or "laya point" itself. Then, we can look outward from inside
the closed circle of the seven layers of abstract motion or "spinergy"
surrounding it. Mount our center of awareness on the first "life" ray emanated from
it. Become that "light." And follow the entire cyclic involutional process
through time and hyperspace, step by step, and fractal involution by fractal
involution, up to the beginning of cosmic evolution -- from the inside out --
rather than from the outside in (as conventional science observes it). That's where
our subjective consciousness on an intangible, non-dimensional ray of
spiritual force can meet the objective, tangible, or metric one dimensional "string"
of Superstring/M-brane theory. (Of which, its M(em)branes are possibly
analogous to the outside-inside surface of Doc Perch's blanket.)

Once we can center ourselves for an extended period of time at this
motionless and timeless zero-point-instant (after long meditative practice following
the path laid down by Patanjali) -- and, subsequently, experience the first
change from emptiness to fullness as we awaken our higher consciousness or
spiritual awareness out of its dormant spinergy -- we will then KNOW "the ultimate
division of time" that Patanjali speaks of as being the "subtle knowledge" that
is the precursor of final "emancipation of the soul," or enlightenment.

... However, to get back to how all this came to me, Doc said it wouldn't
matter even if I did fall asleep while he droned on about these ideas and
concepts in my ear... Since, such sleep would merely become a trance state (which he
called "Mesmer sleep") -- with all my senses turned off -- while my inner
hearing and visual channels, along with their resultant mental imagery, would be
kept open and active by his voice and their word forms.

Incidentally, he also told me that everyone passes through this Mesmer state
between waking and sleeping. It is also the state when we dream as we awaken,
as well as the state when we can consciously connect with the Astral world
just before we fall asleep. And also, incidentally, that hypnotists can use to
place our psyche under their control.

Since, we also can become totally aware of our body and its functions at that
time (as well as the higher states of consciousness that could connect us
with all our inner "lives") -- we can use it to heal ourselves (if our illness
wasn't a necessary result of our karma). He also told me that we could know
when we entered such a "Mesmer" state, if the color we see (sometimes,
unconsciously, when our eyes are shut in a dark room just before falling asleep) is a
deep dark red. [Could this be what HPB called a "brown study" whenever she
"consciously" went into a trance state before writing the SD or performing one of
her phenomena? See: Henry Olcott's "Old Diary Leaves."] By the way, I was to
verify this state by my own personal experience before this period of learning
was over. And, it has served me well, in combination with the Vipassana
healing meditation techniques I learned from another direct teacher during this
period.

Nevertheless, to get back to Doc's phone messages -- one of his tricks was
to, every once in a while, suddenly inject a pointed question that would jerk me
awake. As soon as he was satisfied I had understood, he would go on to
another topic to hold my interest. Although, I sometimes questioned him, and he
patiently answered me by going off on an entirely different track that always
circled back, eventually, to fully clarify his original line of thought.
(Doesn't that remind us of the way the SD was written?) Another trick would be to
use inflectional word patterns that wouldn't make sense literally, but would
generate clear visual images in my mind -- whether I was awake or asleep. In
the latter case, I thought that I was dreaming. (Although, not like my usual
dreams -- these always made good sense -- even after I woke up.:-)

Incidentally, Dr. Perchion told me he had also worked for the CIA during the
cold war, and was part of an experiment in "action at a distance," where a
group of psychics in a submarine were to attempt shutting off the engines of a
jet fighter plane flying overhead, by interfering with it's electronic flight
control system (much in the same manner, I suppose, that he shut down the phone
system). During these experiments, he said, they also used psychedelic drugs
to enhance the concentration of the psychic operators. According to him, the
experiments were successful, but the CIA said they had to abandon the idea, as
they concluded it was not very reliable. Since, he explained, it depended on
the use of unwilling agents, some of whom knew of the personal mental and
physical health dangers resulting from their use of psychic force and, thereby,
were easily distracted. Actually, he told me, the CIA were afraid that the
Soviets could use the same method as a weapon against them, and their research was
actually to find a defense against such possibilities. Later, he said, they
switched over to "sight at a distance" or clairvoyance -- which would be more
useful for espionage purposes, and requires far less psychic energy drain.
These experiments, he said, while they actually worked, also were abandoned due
to their unreliability (some of the psychics, who weren't as trained as he
was, became "burned out") ... Although, the experiments resulted in the use of
Faraday cages around all CIA confernce rooms, such as the War Room at the White
House, where secret information was discussed -- since they still feared the
Russian's had continued using such techniques (and, possibly, were better at
it.:-)

Apropos, since Dr. Perchion was also in direct contact with Russian
physicists, he told me that they were very advanced in the fields of psychic studies.
When he had introduced some of them to the Secret Doctrine at an international
physics conference at MIT during the early eighties, they said that it was
already used as a textbook by the psychological scientists, but were quite
surprised when he pointed out the correlations with modern physics. One of them
took a notated copy of the facsimile edition back to Moscow with him. (Who knows
what contribution that will make toward coming up with a final scientific
proof of theosophical metaphysics?) Does anyone know, specifically, how far the
Russians have gone in these directions since the fall of Communism?

As part of his Nyingmapa initiation, Perchion told me he had to be capable of
visualizing external images that could be materialized and seen by others, or
photographed. To demonstrate this, he showed me a Polaroid picture of him
standing beside a New York Taxicab, with a wispy translucent image of his guru
sitting in the lotus position on the cab's roof. This picture, which he had
another chela take as a joke, was quite convincing. And, he laughingly said it
was the final proof his guru needed to ordain him as an initiated Lama.:-)

BTW. I could write a book about what he told me of the austerities and the
drug treatments, along with chanting, bell ringing, and drumming, they had put
him through to accelerate his psychic development over a period of less than a
few months on his trip to Nepal. (He told me that one of the other scientists
who were with him on that expedition, actually died from the treatment.)
Compare this to the lifetimes it might take for an ordinary chela, by meditative
means, to arrive at such a state. I wasn't surprised at any of this, since
some of those drug treatments he described were almost the same techniques used
by Native American shamans chronicled by Carlos Castenada. Coincidentally (or
was it karmicly?:-) -- some years ago, I serendipitously met another one of
the supposedly fictional "Don Juan's" disciples, a Yaqui Indian Rock musician
and shaman named "Rainbow," who also confirmed these methods and the accuracy of
Castenada's books. (By the way, it's easy to recognize such a shaman by his
animal "ally" fetish symbol necklace, along with his "medicine bag" and smoke
pipe. :-)

Also, incidentally, strange meetings like that often happen to me. One day,
some 15 years ago I was accidentally blessed personally by the Pope, when I
was casually walking home from work, and his open touring car stopped in front
of me just as I was waiting on a Fifth Avenue corner to cross the street his
caravan was traveling along. I had no idea he was even in town that day.
(Unfortunately, this didn't teach me anything, other than that I might have some sort
of karmic affinities with apparently mystical minded beings. I also met one
of the leading gurus of the Arya Samaj, Swami Suresh Chander, about 20 years
ago in Central Park -- the first day he arrived in New York. He roomed with me
for the next three years after I walked him, barefoot (he not me :-) to the
ULT Lodge that first Sunday evening we met. After sitting through a Lecture,
he never went back, because he said, they wouldn't appreciate his teaching
method -- which was pure Vipassana Yoga mixed in with Hatha and Rajah Yogas -- and
he was satisfied that I could teach him all he wanted to know about
theosophy. :-) Over the years he lived with me, we spent much time together exchanging
Vedic and Theosophical ideas with each other (and sometimes arguing about the
differences between them :-). BTW, In case any of you ever visit NYC, Swami
Suresh (without the black beard which came down to his navel when he first
arrived) is selling fruit from a pushcart outside the Citibank Building a few
blocks from the TS Lodge and Quest book store -- (except for a few months during
the coldest part of the winter, when he goes back to Dharamasala to visit his
family at their Mehr Ashram).

BTW, the contrast between Suresh and Doc Perch was fascinating to me. While
both had vast stores of knowledge in their individual areas of expertise -- one
never stopped talking, and the other rarely spoke, except when asked a direct
question. While they were both around me during the same period of time, and
knew of each other, they never met personally. The parallel was that both of
them had broken away from their religious schools and maintained their
independence as direct teachers of individual students with no thought of
compensation for such teaching. In all my many years of experience with theosophical
organizations and independent Lodges, I never met a teacher with as much esoteric
and adept knowledge as these two.

Actually, Doc. Perch thought that the whole idea of religious schools with
secret teachings on the inside and exoteric teachings for the outer world was a
big joke -- since he knew that a group of his Tibetan "brothers" worked for
the Nazis during WW2, and that some of them would, he said, "sell their magic to
the highest bidder." And, he told me, a few of them even worked for the CIA
(and the KGB) in their psychic experiments. Thus, he had no compunction about
breaking his vows and revealing their "secrets" to me (and even told me to
spill them whenever I thought the time and place was ripe). Actually, he said
his breaking of vows couldn't give him any karma worse than what he already had
:-). Nor could it affect me for that matter, since the vow I inadvertently
made when I signed on as a ULT associate, was sufficient to make me at least a
probationary Chela of any initiated Adept or Master I could find. And, didn't
HPB say that loyalty to the Master was of the highest priority? (Of course,
I took that seriously, and this commentary doesn't reveal the actual methods
of any of those psychic "secrets" I learned from Doc Perch -- since no one
here is an avowed Chela of mine. :-) Even my theory of ABC has some missing keys
that I have to skirt around -- since, like any scientific knowledge, it can be
used for selfish purposes that might be harmful to others.

Besides, he admitted that he got his own initiation by bartering for it. He
said he told the Tibetans at their monestary in Nepal that if they gave him
the accelerated initiation into their secret Eastern science, he would give
them the secret Western science of atomic energy. (Today, that's all public
knowledge anyway, so what difference did it make?) But, they bought it then, and
he went through the same treatment that turned Dr. Richard Alpert into Baba
Ram Dass in less than a year at the same Nyingmapa temple in Nepal where Dr.
Perchion had also spent some months before he finished his training in New York.
BTW, Perch said that his Tibetan Guru told him that in order to wipe out his
karma from Hiroshima, he had to chant Om Magne Padme Hum one million times
(and if he miscounted, to start over from the beginning). As an additional
penance, he was also assigned as the nurse/guardian of the old (late) Panchen Lama
when he was in New York under medical treatment for cancer at the Sloan
Kettering Institute. It was at that time, incidentally, that I had the unique
privilege of handling and examining the diamond centered Dorje, yellow silk and gold
embroidered ceremonial scarf, Tantra paintings, and the leather covered and
golden sealed Book of the Golden Precepts owned by that high Lama. I must say
that all those sacred artifacts had an unusually penetrating aura, and that
the 20 odd Tantra paintings on a bamboo scroll, besides being very beautifully
crafted were, to say the least, most illuminating. :-)

Also, in the course of our collaboration, Dr. Perchion thoroughly explained
to me the mind concentrative visualization methods leading to realignment of
the brain's neurological connections, whereby the will can be focussed, and such
psychic phenomena can be controlled -- either after long and arduous practice
(or by the accelerated secret methods used by the High Lamas). He also
explained to me the dangers of such practices damaging one's physical and astral
body. He said that the energy must come from the astral body -- either from
oneself or from from someone else -- which is unethical and forbidden by his
Buddhist teachers (One, among other good reasons, why I have never explored the
further application of these techniques personally.) In fact, he told me that
the only reason he was willing to demonstrate these abilities to me, which
actually helped shorten his life, was that he was already dying from the radiation
exposure he contracted when he was partially blinded (looking through a
defective periscope) by the first atomic bomb tests of his trigger design at the
"Trinity" site in Alamagordo, New Mexico. Incidentally, Dr. Perchion died at
age 60 -- the same age as HPB. (If that means anything. :-)

BTW, one of the other things he taught me was that the Secret Doctrine could
be much better understood if it is read out loud and chanted -- guided by the
diacritical marks and typographic keys that HPB used in her careful writing
and editing of the completed typeset folios. I found this out, when Dr.
Perchion, being semi-blind, first asked me to read the SD to him over a period of
several months, and he instructed me on how to inform him of the different
typographic modifications of the text by using a different voice inflection or tone
for each different word form or diacritical mark. When I did this, the
meanings of the sentences became far clearer in my own mind -- since, as he pointed
out, the tonal chanting relates directly to visual images formed directly in
the higher mind by the word forms and their interrelationships. Could this,
then, be one of the "blinds" used by HPB that, as she said, "only intuitive
students would understand?"

I suppose the point of all this, is that "you can't judge a book by its
cover," and that an Adept could look like a nobody, talk like a nobody, and act
like a nobody (until you get to know him). Since, that was the way "Doc Perch"
looked, acted, and talked when he was playing his janitor role and sweeping up
the bar in Jersey City called "Popeyes', and later "Fox's" (that he owned
anonymously, and lived in a tiny apartment above it during his later years). The
same goes for Swami Suresh in his role as a poor fruit peddler. It also makes
the point that the path to enlightenment must be as different for everyone as
is their karma, and that Adepts and Masters could be as faulty and full of
foibles as the rest of us.

Best wishes,

Lenny
