SCIENCE AND THE SECRET DOCTRINE
================================

A PRIMORDIAL AKASIC "SOUP."
---------------------------------------------

A report in LOS ANGELES TIMES, Feb 10th 2000 [on a Gluon-Quark plasma
"soup" at First Manifestation] is titled:

NEW STATE OF MATTER EXISTS.
===========================

The authors are: U. L. McFarlane & K. C. Cole, two of the L A Times
Science Editors. [A similar article is in U S NEWS & WORLD-REPORT for
Feb 14, 2000.]

It is stated there:

"A coalition of nuclear physicists is announcing today [from CERN in
Switzerland] that it has gathered evidence of an entirely new state of
matter--one that may have arisen in the first split second after the big
bang.

The finding, still hotly contested, would...help explain how the stars
and galaxies that make up the universe were formed."

The evidence centers on...quarks [discovered and first described in
1974], which are considered to be the basic building blocks of matter
...

All quarks are tightly bound together in what physicists metaphorically
describe as "bags"... [They are considered to be in] the clutches of the
gluons that trap the quarks inside the bag.

But theorists, [theorizing] and, describing the state of the forming
universe say that at extremely high temperatures, quarks would have been
free-floating in a "quark-gluon plasma." This plasma is thought to be
the origin of all matter in the universe."

It is then observed:

[Work of CERN - European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Switzerland
using their particle accelerator to impact targets with the result that
high temperatures, 100,000 times hotter than the Sun's interior, are
secured during which such a plasma is created for a brief instant.
Other scientists believe this theory to be premature for lack of direct
evidence. The present theory is based on "an accumulation of suggestive
evidence gathered over several years." There are many critics of this
theory who state that evidence secured is not precise and clear, nor is
it yet easily distinguishable from the mass of data so far collected and
which is to be considered.]

The article concludes:

"It is hoped that the new accelerator being built at Brookhaven National
Laboratory, Long Island, N.Y. will provide further evidence under James
Neagle of Columbia University. In this regard, it is further stated: ]

"Thomas Ludlam [of Brookhaven says] "They have seen phenomena that are
new , but they have not made a direct observation...The signals could be
stronger, and CERN has not seen them...We'll be able to deconstruct
quarks and look at how they behave. This is probably as close as we're
going to get to the beginning of the universe."

THEOSOPHY offers:

In the Secret Doctrine (SD II 149) Mme. Blavatsky wrote: "the whole
issue of the quarrel between the profane and the esoteric sciences
depends upon the belief in, and demonstration of, the existence of an
astral body within the physical..."

If we consider the duality that is represented by these components of
the atoms that science speaks of -- of quarks restrained by a
corresponding force of guardian and circumscribing gluons, we might be
better able to understand the nature of this pronouncement.

The Secret Doctrine in describing the beginning of manifestation speaks
of Fire as the first pure element. It is said to appear universally,
spontaneously and simultaneously over the whole plane that is to be the
manifested Universe. (SD I 16, 87, 113-4, 216, 253, 338,) It is called
energy, force, primordial matter, Maha-Buddhi, and Akasa. It is
described as a living magnetic substance, the One Element, the
primordial element, the progeny of Kosmic spiritual Electricity.

These terms used in esotericism and Occultism, appear to correspond to
the theorized description of a kind of "universal plasma soup." This
would be the basic "world stuff," the "kosmic dust," the "skandhaic
aggregates," from which the manifesting worlds are refashioned after
their long sleep in Pralaya.

In scientific thought there seems to be the growing idea that an
"akasic," or an "astral matter" that exists within, and it would be a
prelude, to all gross physical forms.

The occultism of the Secret Doctrine observes: "The Monads (Jivas) are
the Souls of the Atoms, both are the fabric in which the Chohans
(Dhyanis, gods) cloth themselves when a form is needed." ( SD I 618)
But, in theorizing a primordial plasma-soup of gluon/quarks, at that
level, they must be dealing with primordial force-fields, conceptually
as CAUSES for subsequent material phenomena that ensue in time and
space. These centers of Force then form the basis for all subsequent
densification of forms around them over the entire period of
"evolution."

Such fields appear to be entitative. And their cause and original focus
remains as elusive as before. But the individualized force-fields and
their components of focus and periphery are to be treated as a
reasonable necessity.
( SD I 515 may refer to this.)

The "Secret Doctrine" states that the entire manifestation of
differentiated matter (emanating from the ABSOLUTE) consists of vast
hosts of MONADS (Atma-Buddhic units of "Spirit" conjoined to "Primordial
Matter"). These fill the Universe (SD I 289), and being both spirit and
matter conjoined, every degree of Intelligence, Consciousness and Form
(which, taken together are evidence of their individuality. In turn
this indicates the level of their "progress" on the "pilgrimage of the
Soul." The spirit-soul is ever the focus for, and potentiality, present
within the diversity of monadic material that is drawn around them to
form their "vehicles." "To occult Science, force and matter are only
two sides of the same SUBSTANCE." (SD I 623)

Additionally, the philosophy of Theosophy indicates that the Universe is
a vast cooperative of interacting powers, forces, structures and that it
is produced, periodically as a "manifestation," as a necessary part of a
Manvantaric and Universal "form." Patanjali states: "The
Universe...exists for the sake of the soul's experience and
emancipation." (Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, p. 25)

The Universe is infinitely sensitive and each "part" or "unit" is subtly
related to all the rest. HPB quotes Leibnitz approvingly: "Every monad
reflects every other. Every monad is a living mirror of the Universe
within its own sphere ...Every monad or Elemental is a looking glass..."
(SD I 631)

Matter to the Occultist is an illusive thing, and HPB says the atom is
"infinitely divisible." (SD I 520) Earlier (p. 514) she writes:
"Matter, to the Occultist...is that totality of existences in the
Kosmos, which falls within any of the planes of possible
perception...'Masters' in the Occult Sciences perceive the CAUSES that
produce ethereal vibrations."

"But infinite divisibility of atoms resolves matter into simple centers
of force, i.e., precludes the possibility of conceiving matter as an
objective substance."
(SECRET DOCTRINE I p. 519) And that covers a vast area.

In another place (Lucifer, Vol. 8, p. 116fn) HPB observes: "the atom is
not a mathematical point or a fiction; but verily an immutable Entity,
a reality within an appearance--the molecule being in occult philosophy
not a figment of that which is called maya, or illusion. The atom
informs the molecule, as life, spirit, soul, mind, inform Man.
Therefore the atom is all these, and Force itself...[atoms] in their
collectivity, [are] simply the (spiritual) sparks on the manifested
plane, thrown out by Anima Mundi, the Universal Soul or Mind
(Maha-Buddhi, Mahat) from the plane of the Unmanifested. In short the
atom may be described as a compact or crystallized point of divine
Energy and Ideation...With us "atoms" are the inner principles and the
intelligent spiritual guides of the cells and particles they inform.
This may be unscientific, but it is a fact in nature."
