Dear Steve:
Yes there is a danger in too much reliance on texts, if one does not
think over the materials and the ideas given.
But is it not better than reading and wasting time on sensational TV or
novels of no continuing worth?
How does one satisfy the karmic and skandhaic inclinations of a whole
spectrum of newly born independent and free minds? How does one direct
them inward to seek inner truth? How is that INNER TRUTH made clear?
There is no one way, but a multitude of paths.
The Buddha came at a specific time (500 BC) and put forth his teachings
that reverberate strongly -- but were banished again from India by the
action of the Brahmin community who sensed in those their loss of
control.
Buddha (500 BC) thus came to an ancient people who already had the
BHAGAVAD GITA given for all by Sri Krishna (3,100 BC) or, 2,500 years
before his incarnation.. It is sad to note that that message was not
widely diffused, but was concealed as were most of the Upanishads and
the Brahmanas and the Aranyakas -- attached to the Vedas which were
incomprehensible without a key to their meaning.
Look at the disputes between HPB and Max Mueller for instance. But that
was necessary because in India those had been hidden and not made a
matter of general knowledge and common practice. The Brahmins
sequestered the Sanskrit texts and refused to share them with the lowest
castes. This is what has brought on the downfall of India as a nation --
the oldest of the Aryan sub-races (the first).
If you think that the knowledge of India lies only in the few texts we
have seen translations (?) of, then I wish to say there is a whole grand
pattern is still there and well known to real Sanskrit scholars ad those
are in the brahmin community. A close study of the issues of
THEOSOPHIST between 1879 and 1895 reveals this. Here is a partial
survey

[ Theosophy is a statement of facts in Nature. As a philosophy
it is eclectic and includes all in its purview. It investigates all
phenomena, and relates those observations to its lore, constantly
checking and verifying independent observations, and comparing those
with the records of the past.
[Theosophy is the combination of all of these, considered in
their interrelation, the entire system of learning and knowledge leading
to all-inclusiveness. It is the 7th System: Sanatana Dharma, which
unites them all.
Mote: Modern versions of the Upanishads, owing to abridgments in
Akbar's reign may be inaccurate.

Theosophy dos not advocate parroting but recommends strong independent
thinking. (see Key on EDUCATION)
Those attracted to reading and thinking about Atlantis, etc. are rebels
at heart -- who distrust the foreshortening and obliterating theories
and dogmas of our present "Science authority" -- preferring to follow a
sense of eternity even if uncertain , and these are based on a
reminiscence of reincarnation and Egoic continuity.
Also no extremes are recommended, but rather the "Middle Way." In such
case the act of choosing is a plus.
Present duty and assistance can be balanced by an attempt to grasp the
whole of the knowledge available. Ask yourself why was it that ISIS
UNVEILED was first published. Then after many questions and discussions
as can be followed in the magazine articles, the SECRET DOCTRINE was
then issued to satisfy the inquiring minds (of all kinds) -- many are
the paths to wisdom, but released as information already is, it takes
the desire to know -0- which students have to take what is already
there.
It has always been so. The information is there, but it takes
persistence and a building up of interior knowledge to recognize and
make use of it. This is a self-generated effort and cannot be enforced.
As you observe the "open forum" generates the best environment for
interests of all kinds to meet and secure the thought of others as to
their worth.
Best wishes as always,
Dal

Dal-I find all that you say quite reasonable.
My concern, in my response, is that students learn to allow a text
like the SD to work on their interior natures so that we become that
which we are after. I feel that that process is impeded through too much
reliance on Theosophical texts. We need to be looking for that in
ourselves which validates the Truth in such texts and then giving that
sense of Truth more and more power in our lives.
I think that that is the precursor to practical Theosophy.
Otherwise, in passively giving our assent to the literature, we will
never internalize and find our own way to express that which we hold
true.
This is especially true regarding ideas about Atlantis and other
subjects like that which are over dramatized in New Age (movies, tv
shows) thought in our culture. It has become clear to me that people
come to Theosophy for many reasons, and chief amongst them is that
Theosophy is the obvious repository for all that has been published
regarding these concepts. Unless students temper their attraction to
these subjects (Atlantis, Lemuria, giants, etc.) with liberal doses of
the need to clarify their own natures and the true Universal concern of
Thesosophy for the welfare of Humanity, this information will go wrongly
used and remain just dramatic stories about other people. Then we have
exculded ourselves, from the work therefore required to "right thy
wrongs", as participants in the far distant past.
I think the issue is to become truly holistic about Theosophical
writings so that we are constantly putting all that we read in the
greater context of the Teachers motive for releasing such information to
begin with. I know how presumptous that may sound, but surely we have to
consider the Buddha's sense of philosophical need for our welfare which
exempted much metaphysical and historical issue from his presentation.
Now we have Theosophical writings including this huge gamut of
information. It seems therefore incumbant upon ourselves to tread very
carefully where these subjects are discussed, and beware of jumping to
conclusions about the use or application of such knowledge. This seems
especially true in our times and would seem to be a test of our ethical
and mental integrity.
Obviously an open forum such "Theos talk" is the place to have
open discussion. I guess I am just being conservative and trying to be
careful we don't become just another New Age group which has taken
Theosophical Teaching for granted-
