"Prayer" might be a word in need of defining, from 
various "relevant" perspectives, especially as it seems to 
have a somewhat varied history. Another word came to 
mind that might be seen as somewhat related: 
communion. So how about, say, "communion with one's 
higher self," for instance---not that those words can't 
potentially lead to just as many tangents as any other 
words, but ...

And then there's Whitley Strieber's book "Communion," 
if anybody's interested in a somewhat different 
perspective.
