I cannot prove it, but have always suspected Morya WAS the Maharajah
of Benares, or a senior member of his family. His motto ("There is
no religion higher than truth") was adopted by HPB for the TS, after
all. She tells us that Morya was a nobleman of high rank, and I
believe K. Paul Johnson once said that Morya was the actual name of
the Maharajah, in which case it would not have been a pseudonym, as
KH was. Morya, as you know, is the name of an ancient dynasty which
united much of India. If there was a Morya (some say the mahatmas
were all fantasies) it would be impossible to make a positive
identification because red herrings were thrown into the record to
prevent their worldly identities from being known.
