The U.S. has a coalition of 90 countries behind it. It will NOT go to war unilaterally. In addition, failure to go to war will send a message to the terrorists that terrorism works. Giving in to a bully NEVER reduces the bully's level of confidence.

ii) the Iraqi army is a spent force and poses
absolutely no direct threat to US security. If the
argument is that Saddam has WMD and he will be willing
to give these to terrorists, and he is in contact with
such terrorists, then why don't these terrorists have
these weapons already?
How do you know they don't? In addition, Hussein is interested in personal power. He will not just give out weapons of mass destruction to terrorists; he will expect something in return. He IS giving money to terrorists, currently, while crying that there is no money to feed his people.

These weapons can be used to blackmail his neighbors, which could give him de facto control over the Middle East oil supply. His past invasion of Kuwait shows that this is one of his goals. And THAT is a direct threat to the United States.

As for the right to invade, well Saddam Hussein GAVE that to the United States, when he lost the Gulf War. It was part of his conditions of surrender.

iii) if the US goes to war without UN backing, what
will the US do if China (as a hypothetical) decides to
claim back Taiwan?
Honor its treaties with Taiwan. What if Taiwan decides to claim back China?

iv) the US is the only super power left on this
planet.
What is China? Chopped liver?
