Actually, the official name is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, and was so incorporated under New York State law on 6 April 1830.
"Mormon" and "Mormonism" were indeed pejoratives used by non-members but
turned into a badge of honor. Latter-day Saints is the correct term but
Mormons often just refer to themselves as "the Saints" and to the
organizations as simply "The Church" as we New Yorkers usually refer to
NYC as 'The City" as if there were no other or at least none that
matters. Of interest is the idea that the word "saint" originally meant
only a member of the church as in the Bibical "to the saints at Ephesus"
and not the usage the Roman Catholics came to give it.
