The Return of Separate But Equal

Those who thought separate but equal had gone away for good are
amused lately to see that the Bush royal family seems to have revived
it. The royal family has asserted the position that drug users are
not pathetic characters in need of medical treatment, but
terrorists. Hammering these characters is not medical malpractice
but a war on terrorism. This is only true, however, if the patient
is not a member of the Bush royal family. Members of the royal
family are subject to a completely different standard of justice than
non members. The Bushes resolve this absurdity by proposing what
amounts to separate but equal systems of justice. If you are a Bush,
you get a completely separate standard of justice which is equal for
all Bushes. If you are not a Bush, you get a separate standard of
justice which is equal for all non Bushes. These two systems are not
equal or even remotely comparable to each other, but they are equal
within their respective classes. What is embarrassing about it is
that members of the druggie underclass have an annoying habit of
complaining to polcie about members of the Bush druggie upper class.
What is encouraging about this is that even though the royal family
considers lower class druggies to be "terrorists" they are asserting
a more sensible attitude toward royal druggies and declaring them to
be medical patients in need of medical care. It probably will not
happen, but the possibility at least exists that what is sauce for
the royals may become sauce for the scum of the earth as well. We
don't insist that diabetics or heart patients are terrorists (unless
of course they are royals). Why shpuld we declare that mental
patients are terrorists unless, of cpurse the patient's name is
Noelle?
The problem of course is that we simply cannot treat Noelle the way
we treat low life scum who were not born into the right families.
There are easy ways to fix that, though. Maybe she could shoot up
using a golden needle, or maybe the Surgeon General could be told to
administer her drugs. Now that limited sanity has crept into the
system in the form of special treatment for addicted Bushes, perhaps
the royals can be persuaded to find some other way to put the stamp
of privilege on their noble birth and generalize a sensible social
policy toward this problem.
In other news, retired Brigadier David Grange was interviewed on CNN
tonight. He says he believes George has just about all the forces in
place that he needs for his war with Iraq, or as some of us think of
it, his personal self enrichment program. Donald "Rummy" Rumsfeld,
who is one of the likely beneficiaries of the war, has made it clear
it makes little difference what Saddam does or doesn't do, or says or
doesn't say. There will be war no matter what. If the forces really
are in place, with Rummy grinning and Georgie drooling over those oil
wells, it seems reasonable to expect war no later than January. That
will lead to at least a tmeporary stock market crash, which could be
a good investment opportunity if you have cash to spare and are very,
very nimble. It would be worrisome, but news reporters have assured
us there will be no Yalies likely to die in this thing. Just a lot
of low status grunts and ragheads. That is a big relief to those of
us who think human life has value so long as it is Yalie life (but
not otherwise). The question now is whether the next oil acquisition
will be in Iran or Venezuela. Some commentators think George will
deploy troops in Colombia and use that area as a base for seizing
Venezuela's oil wells before attacking Iran.
What I don't understand is why not attack Iran first, then Venezuela,
then Iraq. Iran's oil reserves are not as large as those of Iraq.
But its armed forces are incompetent, and since it is not an Arab
country, it will get little sympathy from the Arab World, which is
well aware of Iran's ambition to restore the Persian Empire. Or then
maybe that is the real plan. Maybe George is going to do a Patton
and make everyone think he is after Iraq's oil, then - surprise! - he
attacks Iran instead,
Another possibility would be to discover some "problem" in Mexico,
then attack and denationalize Pemex. Once the "problem" is
identified, it could be resolved by merely Bushwhacking Pemex's oil
fields. Mexico is closer to Bush country than Iraq and more
accessible. It is easier to keep an eye on. It is also closer than
Venezuela. He could declare a new form of Manifest Destiny. It
would not be necessary to take over the whole country, since only a
portion of it has oil.
I think George is getting bad advice. We need to send Condoleezza
Arroz back to Stanford and replace her with someone who has a better
grip on the opportunities.
