Dear Christina and Friends:
If we refuse to take the action of KARMA into account, this
can never be explained other than by the whimsical action of
some personal God, and we then, we tend to run to the
priests and try to pay them to intercede. It still remains
to be proved they have any real or actual power. But there
is always a "doubt." and they have learned to play on our
fears and ignorance.
What I have learned from Theosophy is:
The Higher mind always sits in judgment over the Lower mind.
It is impossible not to. We all have both of these active
in us. The Higher Mind reminds us of duties and hence the
playful and amusement loving Lower mind objects and seeks to
evade. Life under those circumstances is felt to no longer
be "fun."
A moment of consideration says to us: Do you want fun now
and pain in the future? Usually we answer: We want fun now
and fun in the future. Then the rest of our life we try to
evade the consequences of injudicious "fun" snatched now
from the needs of DUTY.
Let us ask what is actuality? Are so isolated we need not
consider anyone but ourselves? Are we the personal isolated
selfish man? If s, why do we pretend to be dutiful, honest,
sincere, loyal, friendly, when in fact our inner (lower mind
and desires) are quite the opposite? How is it we know
about this duality at all ? Does one prove the existence of
the other?
Consider that the Higher Mind is an inextricable part of the
MONAD ( ATMA -- SPIRIT and BUDDHI - WISDOM).
ATMA is a synonym for the UNIVERSAL -- like the concept we
have of God -- OMNIPRESENT AND IMMANENT in everything down
to the least atom. This tells us we are related to
everything in our bodies (that makes them up, and gives them
animation and purpose), and all around us. On examination
we find everything works in very good order -- laws are
everywhere enabling harmony of diversity to flourish and
continue. One wonders why this is so, the, if we compare
ourselves with others we find we are both "same" and yet
"different." Why ?
The whole UNIVERSE of so many forms, large and small, near
and distant, old and new is made up of the embodiments of
thoughts and feelings for aeons past. One can say that the
Universe is embodied consciousness. AWARENESS. It is
always the immovable and undying SPIRITUAL RAY in us that is
the witness and the observer, and also the INNER JUDGE.
What is the basis for judgment: It is to be found in the
Bible, in the sayings of Jesus and of the great prophets?
For some reason, few Christians pay attention to those, as
they place restraints and disciplines on the PERSONALITY
( the Lower mind,) which rules, along with thee desires and
passions our embodied, earthy life. And the Personality
desires to be FREE. Lawless and then, responsibility-free.
But it turns out not to work that way. Why ?
It is unfortunate we have not been taught ton think in those
terms, soothe concept is new and difficult to handle.
So all of us are two INDIVIDUALS. We have the HIGHER which
relates to DEITY, to GOD, to TRUTH and to GOODNESS. And we
have the Lower Self, also strong, forceful, wilful,
determined to be free and happy. It has many ideas about
making things easy for itself: luxury, money, a pleasant
place to live, no troubles, recreation any time, etc... and
above all no cares. No fears for a troubled future, etc.,
etc.
If we watch closely those who use that concept, we find they
presently get bored. No challenges, nothing constructive to
do, so they start dabbling with sensations: induced states
made by drugs, alcohol, ... weird rhythms and music, going
into danger, excesses of speed, rashness, etc... (Have you
ever watched the TV ads for car selling?) (Have you noted
the "NEW AND IMPROVED" this and that? Do they encourage
thinking? )
Theosophy presents an age-old view: that all life has
purpose. There are rules and laws that make for the
cooperation of NATURE and the UNIVERSE. We are a part of
that, and have a place (logically) to fill. Do we know that
place? Are we willing to find out? Are we willing to
change some of our ways of life?
Theosophy points to the ordered ways of all Nature. We are
"free," and also "not-free." We have as point of reference
all the wisdom of our own past experience stored up in
BUDDHI. Are we going to take advantage of that ? What
awakens us to that fact ? Is it boredom, pain, an accident?
Where have we acquired a sense of danger -- as occasionally
we listen to warnings from the voice of Conscience. And
what is Conscience, except the voice of Buddhi ?
What tools do we already possess that we are not using ?
If "Jesus," as the Christos -- the highest Sage -- (just as
Buddhi can be called he "son" of the Atma) represents in us
our own HIGHER SELF, then our lower mind (the personal and
fragmentary mirror of Mind embodied in the daily rat-race of
life), represents the average person with more or less
perception of life and living, but not seriously interested
in finding out. It is an attitude of " "don't bother me."
"Leave me alone." "Let me continue as I am." Not very
ambitious or aware of anything, but content to go along and
is rudely shocked when awakened with circumstances that are
accidental, unaccounted for, unforeseen .. Then: "Why me
?"
For those of us who have met such conditions, the value of
theosophy is manifest.
The presence and universal operation of laws that lead to
eternal personal responsibility ought to be plain by now.
But, there are those who would rather believe they are "Owed
a living." and "There are no Laws I was ever taught of."
For them the discovery of the responsibilities of joint,
family, and community life are an annoying surprise. Few,
again, are those who set to work to discover those. and
perhaps fewer still are those that work on improving their
condition as a result of that discovery.
We always gets what we pay for. If we are indifferent, then
why do we expect to be coddled and cosseted and given a
cushy environment with nothing for us to do in return?
Only a study of Karma gets us any useful answers. Or so it
seems to me.
Best wishes,
Dal

=) I am afraid that I do not know how to only observe. How
do we stop
thoughts that are judgement? How do we not judge ourselves?

I am sorry Christina!
Judgment is just that. I do not believe Jesus ever said that
a
particular type of judgment is good. I am sure he would have
said so if
it is true. Judgment is only the doing of ego and
personality. It is
purely Karmic.
