Bruce: The "and" in between the two clauses merely means that two things
happened. There is no causal connection indicated in the sentence. You
could have said, "A friend of mine ate a beef sandwich and died," but that
wouldn't mean that the beef sandwich killed him. He could have been in a
car accident.
