Dear Peter:
Re: S D I 71 - 72
Let me place some comments in the body of your inquiry below:
Dallas
===========================
S D I 71 - 72
7. BEHOLD, OH LANOO!* THE RADIANT CHILD OF THE TWO, THE
UNPARALLELED REFULGENT GLORY, BRIGHT SPACE, SON OF DARK SPACE,
WHO EMERGES FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE GREAT DARK WATERS. IT IS
OEAOHOO, THE YOUNGER, THE . . . (whom thou knowest now as
Kwan-Shai-Yin. --
================================
DTB From the UNMANIFEST ABSOLUTE the manifested Universe is
reborn on the Highest Plane as UNIVERSAL SPIRIT -- but this
"glory" or, "Bright Space" contrasts with the "darkness" of the
ever-unknown OEAOHOO -- a SOUND which acts as a symbol of the
ABSOLUTE ALL. The "sound" of the vowels is used to indicate the
all inclusive aspects of we in Manifestation think of as Spirit,
Matter and Mind united in ENERGY the DIVINE and indefinable
TETRAKTYS of the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, and Hindus (who used
the undefinable OM) -- and for the Chinese, who used the ever
indefinable "Tao." In this system the whole of manifestation is
symbolized by the PRIMORDIAL MAN as the MACROCOSM.
When we deal in Metaphysics, we have to agree on terms. ATMAN in
Theosophical terms is the WHOLE ONE UNIVERSAL SPIRIT in
Manifestation. It is a radiation from the ABSOLUTE
(indescribable background -- the causeless cause). If we attempt
to describe it (Spirit) we can only say "perfection."
But Spirit does not "manifest" without its contrasting aspect
PRIMORDIAL MATTER, or BUDDHI. Also named Mulaprakriti or
ROOT-MATTER. Buddhi is WISDOM -- the ACCUMULATED RECORD OF ALL
EXPERIENCES. Hence it responds analogetically whenever a matter
of choice arise with individuals (who share in this internally
through their individualized Monad -- Atma-Buddhi)
In The SECRET DOCTRINE Vol. I p. 15 H P B speaks of passing from
the non-manifest into Manifestation. Duality and contrast arises
in many ways. This is illustrated in the diagram on p. 200 Vol.
I. Note that the 3 top "planes" are not defined except by a
cryptic TRIANGLE. Thereafter the 4 succeeding planes have
dualities except for the 4th which is the "turning point."
This 4th plane ( 7th) is found to be the location of the 4th
"Globe" -- the balance point the 5th, midway between the 1st and
th 7th. It is marked "Globe D" and, we as humanity, in the
present Manifestation are located there in the 4th Root Race
(named "Noble" or Aryan) and the 5th Sub-race.
We could also make an analogetic comparison between these (the 7
Stages, periods of time, cycles and the "Globes") and the 7
Paramitas (Virtues) detailed at the beginning of the 3rd fragment
of the VOICE OF THE SILENCE ( pp. 52-3) -- which gives us a
relationship between these successive "Globes" and the kind of
development of soul-quality which can mark the best of
acquisitions we can make in those relative periods.
"Brightness" requires a Light Source and a screen on which the
Light can be reflected through some medium ( manifested SPACE.).
Hence one has a further analogetic picture symbol of Brahma
within the Hiranyagarbha -- the UNIVERSAL EGG. This is the
Universal Monad.
It is produced by the ever-active and never-passive KARMA of the
UNIVERSE. A universal and an individual FORCE, that drives the
successive waves of manifestation and non-manifestation ever
onward, and individually drives the incarnating Monads ever
forward. This "Divine" (collective) Karma in Manifestation may
be considered to be the FOHATIC Power. It is Universal, and in
its uncountable divisions it is at the core of every Galaxy, Sun,
Planet, Man or Atom. These are in a way the "sons" of Fohat.
and as they develop the individual power of choice, every
movement generates a further "son of Fohat," as potentials change
and Monads assume different "positions." Thus individual Karma
is generated and set for adjustment in the future of limited
time.
Obviously there is in the idea (and word) MONAD the inclusion
(philosophically) of many divisions.
If one takes the 10 and the 7, then the 3 and the 4, as H P B
does, we can see reproduced in our circumscribed time and space
and in our own experience the different ways in which personal
experience can be transformed into spiritual and universal
harmonies. This sound very mystical and indefinite, but it can
only be resolved into actual living facts by our lives and
choices.
Each Human Ego is so to say composed of a galaxy of Monads ( or
"little-lives") The Human Monad thus is responsible as a
"Universal MONAD -- in a minor sense -- for countless
"skandhas". We are indeed a Microcosm of the Macrocosm. So too
one may speculate that each individual "atom" is a MONAD for
countless minor "monads -- of still lesser experience. The
discovery of FRACTILES illustrates the universality in both
directions of this fact.
=================================
DTB It would seem that the GREAT DARK WATERS is a symbol used
as a basis for our mental extension and to consider the enormity
of SPACE.
==================================
Comment) (a).
"Bright Space, son of dark Space," corresponds to the Ray dropped
at the
first thrill of the new "Dawn" into the great Cosmic depths, from
which it
re-emerges differentiated as Oeaohoo the younger, (the "new
LIFE"), to
become, to the end of the life-cycle, the germ of all things.
===============================
DTB Under Karma the UNIVERSAL MAN as "SPIRIT" emerges ( S D
I 271-3)
and from this the ADI-BUDDHA, emerges the hierarchy of the great
"Creators" or "Builders" who supervise the re-evolution of forms
out of "chaotic matter -- monads of lesser experience."
In the S D I 207 -210 we are given an illustration of the Great
SACRIFICE. As I read it the hint there is that this WISE
INTELLIGENCE sacrifices its "status," and placing itself
voluntarily in the midst of "chaotic matter" (along with others
of its kind) starts to organize the re-structuring of Chaos into
KOSMOS and thence into minor Cosmos-es.
=====================================
DTB I think these explanations (given by H P B in the
footnotes) contain all that is needed. I have underlined some
of them. If one uses the INDEX and considers the references
further a larger picture emerges.
---------------------------------
He is "the Incorporeal man who contains in himself the divine
Idea," -- the generator
of Light and Life, to use an expression of Philo Judaeus.
He is called the "Blazing Dragon of Wisdom," because, firstly, he
is that which the Greek
philosophers called the Logos, the Verbum of the Thought Divine;
and
secondly, because in
ESOTERIC PHILOSOPHY this first manifestation, being the
synthesis or the aggregate of Universal Wisdom, Oeaohoo, "the Son
of the
Son," contains in himself the Seven Creative Hosts (The
Sephiroth), and is
thus the essence of manifested Wisdom. "He who bathes in the
light of
Oeaohoo will never be deceived by the veil of Maya."
Kwan-Shai-Yin is identical with, and an equivalent of the
Sanskrit
Avalokiteshwara, and as such he is an androgynous deity, like the
Tetragrammaton and all the Logoi** of antiquity. It is only by
some sects in
China that he is anthropomorphized and represented with female
attributes,*** when, under his female aspect, he becomes
Kwan-Yin, the
goddess of mercy, called the "Divine Voice."**** The latter is
the patron
deity of Thibet and of the island of Puto in China, where both
deities have
a number of monasteries.***** (See Part II. Kwan-Shai-Yin and
Kwan-yin.)
--------------------------------------
DTB
Island of Puto may also be related to the "Grotto of Zarathustra"
S D I 464.
2nd Para. Glos p. 384; [ see also S D I xxiv; xxxviii; II
337-8, 403, 416fn, 503]
This probably relates also to the legends of the "Sacred island."
and to the mysterious "Shamballah."
It appears to be a place of inviolable refuge where the Divine
Sages have their isolation from our kind of chaotic world when
needed by them.
--------------------------------------
[FOOTNOTES]-----------------------------------
* Lanoo is a student, a chela who studies practical Esotericism.
** Hence all the higher gods of antiquity are all "Sons of the
Mother"
before they become those of the "Father." The Logoi, like Jupiter
or Zeus,
Son of Kronos-Saturn, "Infinite Time" (or Kala), in their origin
were
represented as male-female. Zeus is said to be the "beautiful
Virgin," and
Venus is made bearded. Apollo is originally bisexual, so is
Brahma-Vach in
Manu and the Puranas. Osiris is interchangeable with Isis, and
Horus is of
both sexes. Finally St. John's vision in Revelation, that of the
Logos, who
is now connected with Jesus -- is hermaphrodite, for he is
described as
having female breasts. So is the Tetragrammaton = Jehovah.
But THERE ARE TWO AVALOKITESHWARAS IN ESOTERICISM; the first and
the second Logos.
*** No religious symbol can escape profanation and even derision
in our
days of politics and Science. In Southern India the writer has
seen a
converted native making pujah with offerings before a statue of
Jesus clad
in woman's clothes and with a ring in his nose. When asking the
meaning of
the masquerade we were answered that it was Jesu-Maria blended in
one, and
that it was done by the permission of the Padri, as the zealous
convert had
no money to purchase two statues or "idols" as they, very
properly, were
called by a witness -- another but a non-converted Hindu.
Blasphemous this
will appear to a dogmatic Christian, but the Theosophist and the
Occultist
must award the palm of logic to the converted Hindu.
THE ESOTERIC CHRISTOS IN THE GNOSIS IS, OF COURSE, SEXLESS, BUT
IN EXOTERIC THEOLOGY HE IS MALE AND FEMALE.
**** The Gnostic Sophia, "Wisdom" who is "the Mother" of the
Ogdoad (Aditi, in a certain sense, with her eight sons), is the
Holy Ghost and the Creator of all, as in the ancient systems.
The "father" is a far later invention.
The earliest manifested Logos was female everywhere -- the mother
of the seven planetary powers.
***** See "Chinese Buddhism," by the Rev. J. C. Edkins, who
always gives
correct facts, although his conclusions are very frequently
erroneous.

It would probably help us if we gathered together some of the
statements
that are made with regards "OEAOHOO". See some of the previous
slokas, for
example. Who would like to offer something from the SD on this or
on
"Kwan-Shai-Yin"?
Likewise what are "the depths of the Great Dark Waters"? Would
anyone like
to offer something on this? Try doing a 'search' through for
"waters of
space", something we came across only a few weeks ago and see it
that helps.
all the best,
Peter
