Re: KARMA AND REINCARNATION -- Our INNER "GOD"
Dear J-----------,
Glad to read that you have at last received the KEY TO THEOSOPHY
( by HPB) and are profiting from its reading.
In regard to your questions: Theosophy teaches (and you will
find this explained in the KEY TO THEOSOPHY) that :--
The ONE ABSOLUTE SUPREME CONSCIOUSNESS is within us. It is also
within every other being. It is equally in the "atom" as in the
"Galaxy" which is endless. So, "space' is not a factor. Time
does not relate to it, for it is DURATION (timeless). One may
call it endless LAW. Included there are sympathy, love, harmony,
and the resolution of inequities and discords. It is the actual
BROTHERHOOD which Theosophy holds to be its first "Object."
It is the "God" that is within us. It is the "Father in secret."
It is LIFE itself.
The best prayer in the world to make is to take our personal
(lower) selves in hand, and gently but firmly make a reform in
our own thinking. It is to recognize and to honor "God" who is
present in all beings and in all humans. Hence "war" between
people is an error.
This is because it is the same "God," only we, humans, because
of our several "religions," may give IT different names. It is
the "priests" who create the religions for their own benefit and
have failed to realize and practice Universal Brotherhood as
their own Prophet or Great Teacher originally taught.
This can be demonstrated by reference to their original words.
It is the priests that have made for all the differences and the
anger and hate. Their Karma is very heavy. Where are the
"Apostles of the Good Law?" Look for those teachings that unite
universally and impartially all men and things. It is the
teachings that will clue you on. It is the freedom to do your
own study and research at your own pace that will enable you to
have a growing confidence in your own self-given powers of
"commonsense."
If we try to act and live like "Gods" who are incarnated on
Earth, then we will give respect, comfort, assistance, and love
to all others. This is what Jesus has taught in the SERMON ON
THE MOUNT.
If you have the great book of the Master Teacher: Krishna, who
came 5,000 years ago to the Indian people, called the BHAGAVAD
GITA ( "The Song of the Lord"), you will find he has given the
same teachings then, as Jesus gave to the Jews 2,000 years ago.
Again if you look at the DHAMMAPADA ( "Footfalls of the Law") by
Gautama Buddha, you will see that when he came to the Hindus,
2,500 years ago, he again taught the same ethics. Pythagoras,
Quetzal Coatl, Zoroaster and Lao Tse who were His contemporaries
also taught the very same.
All great reformers, prophets and teachers come to help mankind
by teaching the same thing. This is the basic teaching of
Theosophy. It is because of this that Universal Brotherhood is
made its first object. It encourages the study of all ancient
religions and philosophies so as to demonstrate this fact.
There is a disclosure to us of the existence of a Grand and
Original Lodge of Great Adepts which has existed from all times
and is in the world today. Hints as to its existence will be
found for instance in ISIS UNVEILED Vol. II pp. 98-103, in The
SECRET DOCTRINE in the Introduction, and Vol. I, pp. 207-210.
Those Great Adepts: Dhyan Chohans, Buddhas, Rishis, Mahatmas,
etc... are the true Scientists of our World. Their essential
teaching in Universal Brotherhood, and they ask us to prove it
for ourselves. The hallmark of TRUTH is always this free
request: "Prove it for yourself."
Note: There are many who lure the lazy, the thoughtless, and
those who are impatient, feel they have no time to spare, or are
"in a rush" -- to acquire spiritual or psychic "powers" at the
cost of a learning fee. Beware. Wisdom can never be bought. If
those persons were WISE, then they would not offer it for sale
but would give it away like all true Teachers of the "Good Law"
have ever done.
Wisdom for sale is always questionable. That is how religions
ruled by unscrupulous priests are born. They are created as
sources for money and power. They are designed to keep the
populace ignorant and fearful. They hate, and seek to destroy
all Prophets and "Teachers of Wisdom." That is because their
perfidy is revealed. An example of this is given in the way
Jesus is reported to have been treated by the Jewish priests of
his days.
Universal Brotherhood, in action everywhere, is KARMA . It is
the universal LAW, and no one escapes it. It acts to restore
harmony whenever disharmony or chaos is caused by selfishness.
It works so as to create a harmony of discords. Nature (or the
divine God-Principle) is omnipresent and its omniscience and
omnipotence manifests as KARMA, which reaches all, from minute to
greatest. Karma brings back to every originator the exact
consequences of that which they chose to create in the past (of
this life or of earlier ones).
Personally, as we think, feel and act, as we love or hate, we
make KARMA for our personal selves. This is the Personal Karma
that we are responsible for, and which the ancient Jews referred
to as "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." But if you
examine carefully the context of this saying, you will not find
that it says we (as humans) have to put this into practice. Man
is not permitted or asked to judge and practice this on other
men. Nature wields Karma as needed.
KARMA, the "Great Law of God" which is everywhere, does that;
and we, as humans, have only to live righteous lives and not to
try to judge or correct others. It is for this reason that Jesus
said: "Let him who is without sin throw the first stone." He
meant that none of us is sinless. We have to remember that Jesus
came as a prophet and reformer FOR THE JEWS and not for the
"Gentiles." But it is the Gentiles who have made of his sayings
a "religion." Unfortunately those who call themselves
"Christians" do not honor Jesus fully because they do not
PRACTICE what he taught.
Please realize that WE ARE ENTIRELY UNDER THE GREAT LAW OF KARMA
and that WE CANNOT ESCAPE it in any way.
KARMA and REINCARNATION
At the end of our days in this life, when the great mystery of
the death of the physical man comes to all, Theosophy teaches
(and you will find this explained in the KEY TO THEOSOPHY),
that all the memories good and bad of our life pass through the
physical brain, and enter and lodge in the "astral brain." Then
follows for a few days or weeks a period of sorting out the
"Good" from the "bad". Once this is done, the "bad" memories are
left by the SPIRITUAL EGO (the INNER GOD) to die out and
dissipate in the "astral" realm. There they remain until the
next rebirth of the immortal Ego. They are then re-attracted to
that living center and form the astral and physical vehicles for
a new "life."
Now the "Good" memories and choices during life, the noble,
altruistic, refined, generous, charitable, virtuous, and
universal ideas, feelings, that relate to the practice of
Universal Brotherhood go with the INNER GOD into a condition
called "Devachan (the Land of the Gods)." There, they are
reviewed, and the "fruit of the Tree of Life," is absorbed into
our character -- and then it becomes a part of our talent and
genius for our future life and lives. The period spent there may
be from a few years to thousand of years depending on the
quantity and the depth of those virtuous and noble, unselfish
choices. The average is about 1,500 years.
Reincarnation then takes place according to the combined KARMA of
the "Good," and the "bad" choices we have made in the creation
our own personal Karma. This we cannot escape. It is ours and
it provides the conditions and the circumstances we meet in our
lives, from the time we are born up to the present.
You will find this explained in the KEY TO THEOSOPHY.
Falling in love between men and women follows a pattern of trust,
and of give and take, set up during many lives, just as
incarnating in a particular family and with parents, family,
friends, community, the members of which will either help or
hinder us, also does. All these are the result of how we have
treated or thought of others during our life now and in previous
lives -- it is all one vast and eternal chain of cause and
effect. Our today is linked with yesterday, and our "tomorrow,"
will also be linked with our "today" and all our past days. We
are all learning from each other all the time.
The place where we incarnate will always depend on our Karmic
affinities, and these are as a matter of course adjusted with the
Karma of others. Nature makes those fine tuned adjustments.
Then it leaves us on our own, as it respects our FREE-WILL, and
lets us make further choices based on whatever motives we adopt
when making them. This is the vast and continuous chain of
karmic linkage we have with all others around us.
We may not see it all, but nature never "sleeps" and serves as
the Universal WITNESS and PERCEIVER. It also carries as part of
its program the universal SCRIBE and RECORD (Akasha), and there,
all we and others think, or feel or do, in private or in public,
are kept recorded for all time. We do not yet realize it, but
every living atom in or around us, is such a recorder in and for
Nature, and the carrier of a portion of our personal Karma, as
well as the general Karma of the Universe, of our Earth, and
Galaxy.
Just as each day a pupil who goes to school will find new lessons
that relate to others that he has learned, so will the place and
family into which he will come to birth again, vary so as to
provide us with the result of our present living, both god and
bad.
Some "mental confusion" arises because we study things that we
have not yet thought of in this life.
Or, maybe we heard of them learned them in part and have for the
time being "forgotten" them.
In such cases we can go back to certain basics: --
1. We, as SPIRITUAL GOD-ENTITIES are immortals and we exist
and reincarnate many times as we progress towards the goal of
SUBLIME PERFECTION ( All-Knowing-ness).
2. Nature runs entirely under LAWS. Our Life brings the
results of our choices as KARMA (good and bad) always to us in
the exact measure that we have treated others. Science is
constantly examining the Laws that nature has already established
and put into place. Nature (or GOD) contains all and is all.
3. We are all PUPILS in the GREAT SCHOOL of LIFE. We are
brothers to the grains of sand and to the atoms, to the blades of
grass, and to the insects and the beasts of the field, and the
sea. All these have inherent in them their own spark of the
INNER GOD, which is EVERYTHING and is EVERYWHERE..
4. The idea of Universal Brotherhood is a natural one. Love
and sympathy for all others is a natural sentiment. We are not
born to hate and wage war. That is done by the foolish ones who
do not realize they are IMMORTALS (ATMA-BUDHI) and will have to
pay for every sin and hurt which they commit on others.
We should never judge others or raise our hands or voices against
anyone else. We have to "make our own house clean." We have no
interest in the lives and houses of others, as they have trouble
enough managing their own affairs, and yet, we have to be ready
to assist with advice and the hand of friendship, when asked.
5. "God" is in all SPACE. We are also there. We are a part
of SPACE, and a part of GOD.
6. WISDOM is the sum total of all experience. Our INNER GOD
(ATMA) exchanges this information with all other INNER GODS
impartially. In Spirit we are all Brothers. Wisdom is no one's
personal property and it cannot be made a secret for personal
benefit. If we do that it become selfishness and is "black
magic."
7. Ignorance is a lack of understanding, and an inability to
practice these great ideas in daily living. The cure for this is
complete honesty and sincerity and a profound love for all
mankind.
8. Every experience, and all we learn, is forever carried
forward by the INNER GOD and it forms the basis for every new
incarnation. No experience, good or bad, is ever lost or erased.
We all have the opportunity to redress any wrong we may have done
to any one. "Wrong" or "Sin" is a violation of Law, a breaking
of the trust that others have in our integrity.
9. The voice of the INNER GOD (ATMA-BUDDHI) is to be heard
in the "intuition." It is sometimes called the "Voice of
Conscience." It is the same for all humans.
10. Each human being is on their way towards DIVINE WISDOM
and the final Goal is the Goal of SUPREME PERFECTION -- SPIRITUAL
UNION WITH UNIVERSAL DEITY.
What happens then? We have transformed our personality into an
IMMORTAL INDIVIDUALITY and our duties will cause us to return to
be of assistance to bringing others up to the divine condition we
have achieved. We become pupil/teachers and work with all
mankind --- you will see this in action if you look within
yourself with your own mind and find the DIVINE INNER SELF
present there.
H.P.Blavatsky explains this in her book the VOICE OF THE SILENCE.
Do you have a copy of this?
Best wishes as always,
