reincarnation II

I wrote the following when I was 16. Haven't given it
much thought since until I stumbled upon it just after
I sent my previous reincarnation email. Does provide
food for thought.

A LIESURELY WALK THROUGH THE MALLEE SCRUB

a leisurely walk through the mallee scrub solitary
only the mallee around the wind through the leaves a
reminder of a distant ocean soothing and alluring
mallee old and stunted ragged and worn interspersed
with blue bush and spinifex the smell of eucalypt in
the air i come to a clearing it is large no life can
be found there is only the red sand beneath my feet
another reminder of that distant ocean i approach the
centre of the clearing and now everything has
disappeared no mallee can be seen the air is calm no
movement without scent there is no sound there is
nothing here i lie on the sand believing i am the last
remaining vestige of life in the universe i find
myself sinking into the sand i sink until i feel the
sand almost touching the corner of my eyes there is
sand entering my mouth i can no longer hear but i can
still feel the earth see the deep blue sky breathe the
air soon i find myself floating above my body that is
now fully embedded in the sand somehow i see all these
bacteria and microscopic organisms devouring my
clothes i see my body naked in the earth all these
ants beetles worms centipedes different sizes
varieties crawling slithering over my body they are
everywhere my face my hands entering my mouth my nose
some crows fly down and begin pecking at my ribs a
pair of goannas gnaw at my fingers the crows are
scared by a dingo that starts eating my intestines my
liver my heart another dingo joins the first and
assists abolishing my internal organs the bacteria and
microscopic organisms return to finish what remains
soon i am just bones a shallow skeleton embedded in
the sand	grass begins to grow around my remains herbs
begin to grow among the grass roots from all
directions entangle themselves around my bones soon i
cannot be differentiated from the sand the earth i am
humus one with the soil and the ever growing plants
treat me as such my remains are taken up into their
roots nourishing them giving them life i am a part of
many thousand different roots stems leaves flowers i
see a kangaroo bounding along and eating a part of me
i am now incorporated into that kangaroo a butterfly
drinks nectar from a flower i have provided and now i
provide the butterfly with nutrients other parts of me
are left to waste futile excrement my futility soon
diminishes as i fertilise a seed it is a seed of a fig
tree i now provide the nutrients for an expanding
rainforest i float above this rainforest i can see
different animals and plants that all have something
in them that was once a part of me i am the beak of a
bird a hair on a possums back a wing of a dragonfly a
scale on the body of a fish i am a million different
pieces scattered throughout the earth i watch these
pieces for what seems like an eternity roam the earth
they are never constant forever changing forever
moving they move from organism to organism as life
interacts with life some are taken away from other
pieces of me whereas others are drawn closer together
i watch them and i am bewildered by the diversity i am
perpetuating i have transformed a barren earth into a
fertile paradise gradually through time and
randomisation my pieces are drawn ever closer together
i now float over an apple tree where all of my pieces
have created an apple the apple does not look human
because my pieces have been rearranged they have
condensed transformed diversified specialised i see a
man pick this apple from the tree he begins to eat it
a woman stands by him and he shares this apple with
her i then see the woman place a naked child on a lush
patch of grass as this child grows he appears to draw
in the fertility around him the nutrients are soon
depleted from the grass and the child draws in those
nutrients from the soil the rainforest slowly
diminishes as the child grows in to a boy and then
into a man no longer am i providing a rainforest i am
systematically destroying it as i grow into an adult
the earth once again turns red i am now floating over
my naked body that is embedded in the sand i find
myself walking through the mallee the wind blows
through my hair carrying the scent of eucalypt i
survey the mallee old and stunted ragged and worn
creating the sound of a distant ocean interspersed
with spinifex and blue bush a leisurely walk through
the mallee scrub
