Re: esoteric succession - within or without ....

Hi Frank,
Well, it is quite simple as far as I am concerned. The
quotes say that we have to walk on our own two feet. That
in fact, our spiritual development depends on that - not on
any messenger. So I tend to think that no - de Purucker was
not a messenger. He was an inspired writer who knew a lot
about theosophy and for instance hinduism, not a messenger.
And yes, I do tend to believe that H.P. Blavatsky was a
messenger. I found two more quotes on my website ;-), about
this *relying on extraneous help*:
Coll. Wr. Vol. X, p. 96:
>> It is this pernicious doctrine of ever relying upon
extraneous help that leads to the collapse - physical,
mental, moral, and spiritual - of well-meaning, but weak
and unbalanced minds. It slays the patient of the
mesmerizer and the mental healer, the neophyte of the
sorcerer, and the dilettante of Reform. Neither success nor
safety is to be found outside self-development.>>
Which to me means that the first time we could expect a
messenger was when HPB promised us one (though whether
he/she/they appeared is a matter of debate), namely in the
last quarter of the last century. Before that, we were left
swimming. Being tried and developing what we had. That we
developed into leader-worshippers (Besant, Bailey,
Leadbeater, Tingley, de Purucker, Judge, Crosby, Wadia,
H.P. Blavatsky and Jiddu Krishnamurti), is obvious. Why
would the white lodge want to strengthen that trait in us
by garuanteeing a *messenger* to come physically to keep us
well on our paths?
Seems to me that to suppose that is to suppose them
childnurses:
Damodar, p. 605
[letter from one of the Mahatma's to Franz Hartmann, I
cannot make out from the context which Mahatma.]
>> We [the mahatmas] are leaders but not child-nurses. The
weak ones, not the strong ones, are in a constant need of
definite 'orders,' and at times our chelas satisfy their
wishes. This is willing slavery, but no healthy growth.
Step forward and try to see clearly yourself what is most
needed for the Society. Seek out what your duty may be, and
carry it out. If you do the right thing, I will be at your
side; but I will not give any advice, and will not involve
myself in anything, unless it be unavoidably required, and
you were in great doubt. >>
Seems to me that what goes for an individual (lay-) chela,
goes for the whole Theosophical Movement as well.
Anyhow, these quotes came from:

(advertising my own website, I am afraid).
