Dear John:
What I think is: you are doing fine.
As time passes and as one studies regularly, a recall of useful
aphorisms and statements make themselves available. This of
course depends on the continued effort and patience of any
student as the sources and texts are the same. One must remember
that the qualities of universality and impersonality are the
disciplines needed by the Personality for its own purification.
It is the PERSONALITY who decides to use and to study
THEOSOPHY -- then works even harder to pass it on.
Each offers help as best they know. In dealing with Theosophical
questions, one ought to be always be ready to back one's self up
with some statements or quotations from the PRIMARY writers. The
information concerning student articles is great and THEOSOPHY
MAGAZINE has some of the best as also THE THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT
from Bombay. Specially the period from 1930 to 1970 -- 40 years
of wonderful material in that.
Te only thing one ought to do with regularity, if time permits
(or is allocated for this) is to continuously read through (and
STUDY) the basic texts -- HPB : ISIS, S.D., KEY, VOICE, and,
H.P.B. . and JUDGE ARTICLES, and by Judge : OCEAN, EPITOME,
ECHOES, GITA, PATANJALI, LETTERS THAT HAVE HELPED ME, etc...
until one compiles an index of sources to which to refer in case
of need.
If one makes notes, then these ought to be filed ABC so as to be
able to insert more and retrieve needed ones on demand. It is a
hard discipline to force ones' self to record and compile, but it
has to be done.
The second thing is to set down the nature of the FUNDAMENTALS
and be sure one understands how they fit into and around each
other. This is the deeper study of Nature and of Man. It is
essential.
A third thing is to study and record analogies, correspondences,
symbols and their many meanings, as the kind of "short-hand"
needed to keep track of detail and reduce it back to the
simplicity of fundamentals.
I also use the THEOS. GLOSSARY as a base to store many more of
the "old and foreign definitions" H.P.B. and others have used in
the "Literature."
But no two persons work in the same way. The objective is to
make Theosophy "A living Power in One's Life. 2nd, to make sure
it passes on to other unaltered. 3rd. to tell others where they
can go to such original sources as are available, and dig it out
and prove its value to themselves. There ought to be no
"authoritativeness" in any of this if possible. Let THEOSOPHY
prove itself.
No one can "teach" anyone, they can only open doors and expose
ideas. The recipient has to do all the work. Self-induced and
self-devised ways are the rule. We lift ourselves by our won
"boot-straps." And no one expects or takes any credit for this.
Theosophy is no one's property, but it is for ALL. Our job is to
see that some part of it gets there.
If one uses the KEY and the OCEAN as a base for such references,
then one can widen out to the S.D. and the Articles. Those give
the arguments with which we also should gradually become
familiar.
Best wishes,
Dal

Dallas,
Thanks. As far as your suggestion goes, that I should sometimes
add
"snippets" from the articles that I point to, I must admit that I
do not
have your great skill and know-how, as well as no affinity, or
energy, to
attempt this much more detailed way of operating, that you are so
good at.
All I can do to play a somewhat useful part, within my many
limitations, is
to do what I do, and that is to grind away scanning and
proofreading
articles, and do my best, when I see an opportunity, to point to
articles
and series of articles that may touch on general subjects and
topics that
are being discussed, as well as pointing to a reasonable place
for newcomers
to add to what they study, for starters, early in the game, so as
to get
well grounded as to what Theosophy truly is.
Fraternally,
John DeSantis
