Friend: There are
three quick sources for distinguishing the meaning between SPIRIT and SOUL to
help you: 1. THE
KEY TO THEOSOPHY -- H.P.B. 2. THE
THEOSOPHICAL GLOSSARY -- H.P.B.
(p. 306) 3. THE
SECRET DOCTRINE -- H.P.B. Broadly : SOULIntelligence,
mind, vitality, anima, and relates particularly to an Individual EGO (MIND). SPIRIT
universal Consciousness -- a homogeneous and unadulterated emanation. It is formless and immaterial, yet it
is said to partake of the most divine, highest, spiritual substance (named in
India SUDDHA-SATTVA) SOULand
SPIRIT Whenthe
human (higher, pure and moral) Mind is indissolubly linked to BUDDHI (Wisdom)
it BECOMES a “SPIRIT.” In the
sense that it reaches the stage when it consciously shares in Universal Wisdom
at will, at choice. Further we
read: “…each individual
spirit--this individuality lasting only throughout the manvantaric life-cycle
-- may be described as a “center of consciousness” a self-sentient and
self-conscious center: a state,
not a conditioned individual. “ Hence the
great number of words used in Hindu philosophy to express the quality and
nature of the Soul when it is working THROUGH one or other of its VEHICLES. These seem
to be most fundamental
explanations. Bestwishes, Dallas ========================== -----Original Message----- . . . . and I wonder, particularly from a
theosophical perspective, if there is a distinction between one's
"spirit" and one's "soul" or are they two words having,in
essence, the same meaning? Jim Rodak ----- Original Message
