Dear Chris and Adelasie:
Re: 7 Principles as aspects of each-other
Thank you for your comments.
In my study of Theosophy I have found the KEY TO THEOSOPHY by
H.P.B. to be most helpful. Also I found THE OCEAN OF THEOSOPHY
by W. Q. Judge to be very helpful in unscrambling the 7
PRINCIPLES of a human being.
As I gather it:
One of the interesting views is that each of the 7 principles has
a relationship with the other 6, so one might say each principle
being so related has itself as a plane or a principle and 6
others deriving directly from it which are included (attached) in
each of the other principles (making a 7 x 7 = 49) plane.
The Astral Body (or Linga Sarira) thus serves
1. as a lattice work (electro-magnetic) for the organization of
the Monads, atoms, molecules and cells of the PHYSICAL BODY. (To
make such a pattern or mold, the inherent intelligence of those
building blocks of Nature are considered. Then, the impulse and
the power to frame on the physical plane such forms and patterns
originates on the plane of Necessity where Manas and Buddhi take
the resulting Karma (of this act) into view and project the needs
and karmic future of any action taken.
[Can you imagine the amount of forethought and planning needed to
launch again the Theosophical MOVEMENT into the World? The karma
of the hosts of monads, and of the whole interlocking mass that
forms a Universe has to be considered in detail as well as in the
mass, then only can the work of construction be started and
guided till full independence comes into play.]
2. The Linga-Sarira of itself has 7 divisions associated
particularly with that aspect of living that relates to the
personal physical existence of one life time. Essentially it
corresponds closely to the work of AKASA, as it retains (for the
operation of Karma on the physical and emotional planes) the
impressions of all that takes place on that electro magnetic
plane of impressions closest to the physical plane of desire,
passion and personality.
3. That aspect of the Linga Sarira that relates to Prana
(life-energy) is particularly associated with KARMA (good and
bad) and the inherent nature of the Skandhas (the little lives,
monads of lesser exp[erience) which we impressed with our motives
in the past (of this life and of past lives).
4. Part of the Linga Sarira is also associated with KAMA
(passions and desires) which is very personal to us and, when,
without control and direction, may be called the selfish,
egotistic, desire and passionate nature of each of us. It then
frames the basis for the PERSONALITY. In this capacity it then
serves to connect KAMA with MANAS and thus it creates the bridge
between the controlling MANAS and the desires we all have
KAMA. -- Our Kamic desire-nature. (KEY p. 144
5. LOWER MANAS or KAMA-MANAS. This is where the Personal
Selfish sense essentially resides. Manas has for the period of
one life, been made the slave of our KAMA (passions and desire)
principle. This is the Lower Mind, bound to desire and giving to
passion its ability to ratiocinate. The Linga Sarira here
provides layers of memory and recollection relative to experience
in this life, and sometimes (for rare individuals) of some events
experienced in earlier lives. If it has been purified by "right
livelihood"(good thoughts good words, and good deeds) so as to
attract to it those superior aspects of that link which bridges
death. (KEY 180-1)
6. MANAS -- as H.P.B. points our in the KEY, Manas is 3-fold:
1. LOWER MANAS or Kama-Manas the Selfish Personality; usually
associated with the isolation of vicious concepts, goals and
attitudes; (KEY pp. 91 124 128 130 144-5 179 261 266.)
2. MANAS without motive other than to discover the TRUTH of
things in one's self or in Nature -- pure thought, recollection,
reason -- used for instance in mathematics, science, the study of
Nature and her workings, philosophy, metaphysics, etc... An
examination of the Law of KARMA and of the CAUSAL aspect of all
beings, individual, universal, spiritual and selfish;
3. Higher Manas or BUDDHI-MANAS -- spiritual, universal,
impersonal thinking, intuition (checked and verified by universal
principles, and universal verities such as the Virtues, and their
practical use in daily life. The intuition may be recollection
of dialog between the Lower Manas of this personality, in
relation to its Superior Source: the Buddhi-Manas and the
Higher-Self, the ATMA. It should be noted that the Brain-mind
Lower manas) has to purify itself of all vices and bad motives
if it ever hopes to recollect its nightly dialogs with the Higher
Ego (Buddhi-Manas) and the HIGHER SELF (ATMA). H.P.B. discusses
this in the TRANSACTIONS OF THE BLAVATSKY LODGE [ ULT EDN PP.
64 - 78; BCW. Vol 10, pp 250 -263 ] This seems to me to be a
very meaningful passage. (KEY, p. 158-165).
7. BUDDHI As above mentioned this is approached by the Higher
aspect of the LOWER MANAS. To do this, the Lower mind has will
to make itself "purified" of all selfish or personal desires. It
has to be thoroughly the altruistic, virtuous MIND. Buddhi is
associated with AKASA the highest aspect of the Linga-Sarira. In
the MONAD, Manas is associated as the "son" with its parents
ATMA-BUDDHI -- KEY P. 188-190)
Dialog between the Highest Aspect of the Lower Manas (that aspect
which seeks to become virtuous and universally honest, sincere,
and true), is said to occur nightly during the "deep sleep" phase
of that unconsciousness of the brain-mind -- which is asleep.
Buddhi is one of the poles of the MONAD, the other pole being
ATMA --
8. ATMA. Or a "RAY" of the UNIVERSAL SOUL ( MAHAT ) which is
the Spiritual Pole of the Universal MONAD -- the Manifesting
LOGOS -- when viewed as the synthesis of the 7 COSMOCRATORES,
or, as the Primeval BUILDER, which, under the KARMA of the past
Universe, now being re-created from the monads and skandhas of
that past is also called THE GREAT SACRIFICE. (S.D. I 207-8)
Best wishes,
Dallas
==========================
Maybe a better way to think of expanded consciousness is like a
light going on in room after room of a vast mansion. All the
rooms
are already there but we don't see them until our consciousness
evolves in its ability to illuminate them. It is probably
misleading to
suggest that our astral body "travels" to other planes. It could
be
said that the human entity is composed of seven "bodies," and
that
it is the individual consciousness that does the travelling.
As for altruism, this is simply devotion to considering the
benefit of
others before oneself. No great or earth-shaking deeds are
required.
One need not be a tyro in occultism to be of service to humanity.
Do the deed nearest your hand, be it washing the dishes, handing
in
homework on time, giving a friend a lift to work, whatever
presents
itself. We are given many opportunities every day to forget our
own
selfish needs and desires, even for a moment, and pay attention
to
the needs of others. Each time we decide in favor of the other,
we
place one more stone in the foundation of our own evolution, and
that of the whole human race.
We can worry about being used, but we can also remember that
karma provides perfect justice. If we put ourselves in such a
position, it is because we need to learn something related to
what
occurs. We only learn through experience. But holding back from
helping another because we fear some consequence is like
standing in the river bed as a flood races toward us. We can make
the lessons easy or we can make them hard, but learn them we
will. It is the evolution of humanity that we are talking about.
Right
now we are working on Brotherhood, which leads to Unity, and our
most important lesson is to begin to put the welfare of others
before
our own. Personally I would say that it takes a LOT of practice.
Best wishes,
Adelasie
