Dear Dennis:
I am aware of this in regard to Mr. Crosbie. No claims on his
behalf or by him have been made.
His writings ( The FRIENDLY PHILOSOPHER ) speak for themselves.
I trust you have been through them ?
As far as I know he has had no "Successors." What is a
"successor ?"
It is on such claims (generally unsupported) that religions have
been based down the ages. They produce opinions, traditions,
dogmas, beliefs and divert students from actually studying the
PHILOSOPHY or the words of the original TEACHERS.
Mr. Crosbie, you will notice, if you read what he wrote,
continually effaced himself as a person and always pointed to HPB
and Judge as the "Teachers."
The ULT exists for only one purpose and that is to see that the
ORIGINAL TEACHINGS of THEOSOPHY are preserved and promulgated.
Associates of the ULT agree with this sole objective.
In this regard they pioneered in the revival of the out-of-print
ORIGINAL editions of the Theosophical philosophy (reproduced
either photographically from the "first" edition or reproduced
verbatim in re-set type.
For this purpose the magazine THEOSOPHY was started in 1912, so
that the out-of-print magazine articles of HPB and WQJ could
again be made available to students. Additionally to this, the
printing and publishing of books was undertaken.
Theosophy then is that which for our era and age comes through
Mme. Blavatsky. Without her work and effort, there would be no
Theosophical Movement today, here.
The question that at some time confronts all students is: Do I
study Theosophy or do I study the history and the claims made for
those who were responsible for it? Of course both are necessary.
But it is THEOSOPHY as a philosophy that explains Nature and her
Laws and Works that is of primary value. The history is
something that has happened and which is irreversible and not
subject to our reconstruction, interpretation or evaluation. In
other words, what individuals may have said and done is not very
important as compared to THEOSOPHY as a body of knowledge. This
is my opinion on the subjects you have raised.
If you desire to read about the history of the Theosophical
Movement, then I would recommend THE THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT --
1875 - 1950. ($ 6.50) -- Available through: Theosophy
Company, 245 W. 3rd St., Los Angeles, Ca., 90007. It is entirely
based on documents.
Best wishes,
Dallas

DTB Yes this he did say in 1901.
>From what I hear, subsequently he had reason to change his view
and support.
He resigned from the TS at Point Loma and left it.
------------------------------------------------
This is filling me in somewhat on the history of Mr. Judge and
his
successors.
Could you tell me who, or what Mr. Crosbie was? Was he an
official in his
organization?
DTB The United Lodge of Theosophists was organized by him and his
friends in 1909.
He was not an "official" in it. The ULT has no "officials."
It is a group of volunteers, of students of Theosophy who have
come together to study Theosophy.
The DECLARATION of the ULT is the sole document for this
association. I am sure you have read it -- have you? It gives
the only basis for its existence.
-----------------------------------------------
I recall that HPB and HSO met at the Seance held at the Fox
family that HSO
reported on at the time.
Was Mrs Tingley a medium? - or anyone else of her associates?
DTB I have heard her so described. As to her associates, I do
not know anything beyond what they have written or said. I leave
Mrs. T. to "speak for herself." -- By words and actions.
I do not respect "hear-say" very highly. I place reliance
whenever possible on documents and the actions of persons.
I am not interested in trying to categorize people or to
interpret their motives. I let their words and actions speak for
themselves.
Personally I would rather spend my time in studying Theosophy
than in dealing with matters such as these, which belong strictly
to history, and which we cannot reverse or change.
Fortunately, Theosophy, as a philosophy, does not depend on
either opinions or on history, and certainly not on anything that
I (or anyone else, today) might say or write.
Best wishes,
Dallas
