Dallas offers the clarification (please read what the KEY TO
THEOSOPHY has to say on the subject of the SOUL (Mind) that is
at the core of any human being).
As I read and understand it, Theosophy offers the following
propositions:
1. The Soul is immortal. [Soul is a Triune MONAD: consisting
of SPIRIT + Wisdom/Discrimination + MIND].
2, The after-death states of the soul (between births) are
effect states that depend on the moral content and motives that
any human (embodied Soul) generates during their embodied life.
3. Moral quality depends on understanding of, and voluntary
action with the LAWS of NATURE as a whole. All decisions are
free-willed. All decisions carry a moral quality depending on
whether the person makes a decision that is selfish and
isolationist, of whether the person decides to act in cooperation
with Nature and with a brotherly consideration of the rights and
needs of others as a component of such decisions. [ All our Laws
(legislation) is based on this principle as a practical ideal.
All virtues are based on this. Ours is essentially a MORAL
Universe. Its laws are universal, impersonal and ever-active
Karma.]
Nature contains everything, and WE, as Souls, are a vital part of
Nature. Every "Atom" is a potential "Man-soul." The
"Life-atom" has been described as an "eternal perpetual motion
machine" by Science. The immutable "Laws of Nature" form the
basis of all Science and philosophy.
Man's progress is the progress of the Soul-understanding [which
results in Wisdom] and, which eventually embraces every aspect
of knowledge concerning all aspects of nature in all its
departments. We are (as mind-souls) at the threshold of
Universal Wisdom.
We, (as souls) are the eternal pupils in the School of Experience
and that is Universal -- hence each life is like a day at school.
The immortal soul carries the record of our advance in terms of
character and capacity.
Aptitude, proficiency, talent and genius are the result of
protracted studies in some particular area we chose in past lives
to develop. All choices carry a moral impact on ourselves, on
our character.
This is a synopsis of the Theosophical view concerning the Soul
and its many incarnations as well as the ultimate goal of living
and learning.
Brotherhood is the basis for all true progress -- it is sharing
our acquired knowledge with others, and it includes a willingness
to learn from them the fruit of their experiences.
Best wishes,
Dallas

Thanks for your "take" on this Dallas. My only point was that a
life steeped
in a mundane materialism, does not necessarily translate to the
loss of one's
soul. Even using your example above, it is hard to imagine a
whole lifetime
spent without ANY redeeming qualities whatsoever. It is almost
impossible for
me to imagine the innocence of youth distorted in such a way that
spiritual
ideals or aspirations have been completely abandoned. And If that
did happen,
I would suggest it is a personality defect to be corrected by
karma and not
the loss of ones soul
The loss of ones spiritual identity as outlined by Eldon, seems
to be the
outcome of some very special and rare exceptions. It is not the
common human
experience.
In my opinion, materialism itself is simply another mechanism to
be found on
the physical plane which is intended to test the human
personality and its
potential for enlightenment. Have we lost our ability to envision
a physical
dimension pervaded by ENLIGHTENED materialism?
