Dear Nicholas and Daniel,
Thanks for making me look more carefully at the words I use. In general, the
word "monastery" implies celibacy in the West, but there are many suchlike
fraternities in Tibet that are not necessarily celibate. The Nyingmas and
other schools are not required to be celibate -- in which case I should
probably choose a different word for their fraternities. So let me re-phrase
my comment, which is then very well proven by Daniel's OUTSTANDING quotes
(saving me several days of searching):
Rich: "It is known that both her principal Masters were working in Tibet,
apparently highly placed in Tibetan fraternities as their EXOTERIC
employment."
Now Nicholas -- how do we know that M and KH were UPASAKAS? I thought that
was Their word for HPB, because she was out in the worldly world -- but I
assumed (perhaps wrongly?) that the two Masters Themselves were celibate?
This is an important point, and will strongly affect my dissertation!
Thanks.
Rich
