John, I would stress something with you about this, that if the
Theosophical Society set a standard of vegetarianism it would be that a
standard, something desirable to achieve or strive for... eventually it
would be hoped people would find it to be also a better, economical and
more ecological way for humans to survive... No one to my knowledge has the
power to compel the world to one philosophy ... only through kindness and
compassion can humanb beings change for the better... The practice of
Ahimsa is one you should consider,,, it refers to non injury ... mentallly,
emotionally and physically... that we would have thoughts of love and
kindness to our fellow creatures...

The way meat consumption is handled in the West takes a great toll I think
will agree... consider the mad cow disease that occurred in Britain... Cows
were being fed unnatural products from dead animals to increase their
size... it worked... it also led to humans contracting a deadly serious
disease. The whole lifestock industry had to destroy all the stock of cows
and start over... With new experimentation in genetics and use of hormones
a new repertoir of dangerous practices is in my opinion going to be
unleashed on the public...Meat consumption just doesn't make a lot of
sense... but it will take time for this to really sink in and probably a
few more mad cow disease scares...

The above question on vegetarianism is part of a larger question that I
think you could have some valuable input... being the multidimensional
being that you are, what goals should the Theosophiocal Society have in the
next century and how should it proceed... what is worth preserving in it
and so on..
