Hi. Sorry for the delay, I am on holiday currently and on the other side
of the world (UK). I have not been keeping up with my email.

The mantra OM (AUM, HUM ...) is indeed a very strong one and when used
correctly with the right intent then I am positive that it is of great help
to any genuine student. From my studies I understand that this mantra is
one of the root sounds which has a relation to the formation of our current
manvantra. It is said that if one correctly sounds this mantra (along with
the right concentration) then it can indeed take us on a great inner journey.
This sacred word when used regularly also has an effect on our Samskaras as
I understand it. It helps us to neutralise them so that we can truly deal
with them or "burn" them as some of the commentators on the Sutras suggest
we need to do.
Practically any sound brings about a vibration. The vibration of OM is so
strong that it seems to overpower those that are not in harmony with it but
to be able to do this we need to make sure we create the correct
environment for this mantra which is done through the perfection of Yama
and Niyama according to Patanjali. It is not necessary to be perfect but
if the right effort is put in place and we use this mantra regularly then
the effect can be definitely seen by the student.
One of the books I studied recommended that we should repeat our mantra
whenever the mind is free. That is when we are sitting at our desk at work
or walking down the street, then there is an opportunity for us to bring
our mind under the control of the Will by the repetition of the Mantra and
the meaning behind it.
OM can be said many ways. I understand that the correct pronunciation is
to say it as "AUM". That is Ah-U-M with emphasis in the M which turns it
inwardly but in truth I have no great knowledge of this.
I understand that the word is also significantly more powerful when used at
certain times of the day this being sunrise, sunset and midday.
I have hear of Albert Pike but have not read any work by him. I will have
a look and see if I can find anything in our local TS library when I return
from holiday in January.
Regards
John
