The following quote may add to the discussion. It's from
BEING, EVOLUTION & IMMORTALITY by Haridas
Chaudhuri, Chapter 11, "The Principle of Individuality".
Theos. Publishing House, 1974
The individual in his wholeness is not be equated with the
mind-body complex with which he is normally identified
in his empirical life. There is a depth-dimension of human
personality. Non-mental and transpersonal factors are present
in the depth-dimension of being. The individual is also not to be
equated with the ego-principle which is an organizing
principle of man's conscious experiences. The ego is the
principle of exclusive polarity. It is that which separates an
individual from other human beings. The nonpersonal factor
in him is that which unites him with the universal and the
eternal without abrogating his individuality.
