The numbers 4320, 8640, 12960, 17280 and other numbers related to long
Hindu cycles are all produced by a fundamental scientific theory of the
universe which I call the Harmonics theory. From a single simple axiom
the pattern of energy which produces all the structure in the universe
is calculated. The axiom:

That a single 3D wave produces harmonically related waves and each of
  these does the same.

A harmonic is an exact frequency multiple and the harmonics are produced
because the fundamental universal law is non-linear. It is that simple.
The part about the harmonics themselves producing harmonics means that
harmonic numbers which can be factorised in many ways receive more
energy because there are many paths for energy to travel to that wave.

The very strongest harmonics are 1, 2, 4, 12, 24, 48, 144, 288, 1440,
2880, 8640, 17280, 34560 ...

The number 34560 (2*17280) is especially important, and dividing the
size of the obserable universe repeatedly by this number gives the
distance scales of galaxies, stars, planets, moons, ... cells, atoms and
nucleons. Many predictions of the theory have been verified.

See Harmonics theory - http://www.kcbbs.gen.nz/users/rtomes/st201.htm
and the graphic http://www.kcbbs.gen.nz/users/rtomes/rt-ha-nm.gif which
shows the relative importance of harmonics from 1 to 1000000.
