"Empty vessels make the most noise."
Many pages of talk can be put into a simple saying like the one above.
It requires a rare and scarce commodity.
Here are a few meanings and examples.
You can place a stone (note the alchemical reference also) into an empty
vessel and shake it around and it will make a lot of noise, e.g.:
an enobling thought in an empty mind/personality mind can shake it around
and it will protest like mad. Sometimes the enobling thought stays.
Take a baby or young child with little developed mind as yet. Many will
shout and scream to try and get attention, i.e. they are noisy.
A work like "The Secret Doctrine" with many pages, a very high content of
mind, + ... = a full vessel. Not much interest is shown in it.
the voice of the silence - the spiritual sound. . . . . . . . . .
~~~ ~ ~~~
a mind darkened by personality - tends to an empty vessel, although this may
seem to be the reverse.
"a mind clear and undarkened by personality" - tends to a full vessel, or is
it in fact something quite different?
some believe that when meditating the mind should be emptied - .....
Can anyone add some more . . . . . . . . ............?
Some definitions of empty from the OED:
Containing nothing, void of contents or of specified contents: opp tp *full*;
of space, etc.: Unoccupied;
lacking knowledge and sense; frivolous, foolish;
wanting solidity and substance; unsatisfactory, vain, meaningless.
