Never heard this story, but they were well-matched for size.  He was
(is, I believe) a little guy.  If he really had to go through all the Hindu
purification rites before being allowed back into Holy Mother India,
maybe he thought (note "maybe") he might as well have plenty to get
purified of.

As I used to say, catholics *have* to sin regularly every week,
otherwise there would be nothing to atone for on Sunday, and the
confessional would have to be abolished.
