Dear Keith:

Why not refocus attention on the condition the whole world, and each of us
as individuals are in ?

We as individuals are the result of an evolutionary progression that has
been going on for more aeons than we can count. If what Theosophy states
concerning the evolution of the MONAD ( SD I 170 on ) is accurate then the
immortal Unit of Life (Atma-Buddhi) now the Real Individual that resides in
us (the HIGHER SELF) is the "tutor" of our embodied consciousness, the
Intelligence of our personality which has "feelings, urges, desires," and
also "thinks".

Now you or I may disagree with the way in which Theosophy brings all these
diverse sections of the evolutionary process together (see SD I 181, the
3-fold division) but, I would say after quite a few years of thinking and
studying that they seem to be the most reasonable.

In the opening pages of the SD, HPB has put together the essentials of
those propositions that relate to the enormity of the process of evolution
in terms of space, movement, intelligence, and time-- ideas and numbers
that our minds cannot encompass as "things." And yet, as "ideas" they
appeal somewhere to our imagination -- at least, to mine.

Finding myself in the midst of apparent confusion, it is nice to know that
someone or something has a concept of order. I notice that Science in all
its departments of study and analysis relies at every point on the concept
of order and continuity in matters of phenomena, qualities, properties,
laws of interaction, etc... a path to order out of the welter of diversity
begins to show itself.

Speculative Science, then, has evolved theories as to causes when they
cannot yet determine with exactitude the earliest facts, causes or the
beginnings of manifestation, evolution or the formation of that
intelligence which is now our specific power. Some of the theories have
been given a rigidity which does not reflect later findings which show them
to be inaccurate, specifically as to the origins of human consciousness,
psychology, and the formation of religions and customs

As to position and responsibility of those Learned and wise Men whom we
call "Masters of Wisdom," what portion of blame would we fix on the
Presidents of Universities for the confusion of politics and the foolish
behavior of THOSE who are supposed to uphold law and decency (whatever that
may be) ? These wise individuals have passed through our stage of search
and experimenting. they have discovered the laws of nature and dedicated
themselves to using and applying them. We are beginning to get some idea
of what those are. Why hold them responsible for the wisdom and
information that they offer as a possible cause for our ignorance,
laziness, and fear ?

If we invoke the infinite sensitivity of Karmic law which offers every
life-unit its integrity and continued existence, and adjusts distortion by
re-forming the distorted, then we might see that it is we who voluntarily
invoke this power of restoration because we created by selfish actions the
conditions that made others suffer unnecessarily.

Our real problem, mainly here in the "west" is that we have been brought up
with the idea that we are the owners and because of our might, we are the
irresponsible manipulators of all forms of MATTER lesser than our own
species: by that I mean the minerals, soils, plants, forests, animals,
insects, and humans of less social development or of weaker defense than we
may have developed for ourselves.

The practice is that the "strong prey on the weak." And, they also
strongly resent the moral/ethical concept that the "strong" have to afford
a fair protection to the weak. Fortunately for us the environmentalists,
and ecologists have shown that humanism ought to be protectively extended
to all such weaker elements, because, surprisingly, most if not all of them
have a strong place of life and work in the vast chain of life -- which is
found to require the presence of all those forms so far evolved.

Some religions have gone so far in their theological sophisms and their
resulting dogmas, to provide the idea of a "personal god" which can be
appealed to by prayer or praise. As a result of his whims in these
matters, occasionally some undeserved favor is granted to the unrepentant
but fearful ill-doer. The idea of "confession" results from an innate
sense of justice, and the fear of having to pay for ill doing. This is a
matter that deserves a deep investigation. Theosophy provides answers in
this regard. It offers the proposition that the whole of Nature, and all
evolution is based on harmony and that harmony results in fair and just
laws of life and behavior which involve all beings, including man, who is a
self-moving and self-deciding entity, who is learning to exercise his
creativity with fairness and justice to those around him.
So "sin and evil" would be the result of breaking the great ethical laws of
Life. And "good" would be the result of obeying them. But in our present
culture we ought to be able to define those with accuracy. The "Golden
Rule" is perhaps the closest and best as well as the simplest definition of
righteous behavior.

And where and how the "Masters of Wisdom" may or may not interfere in our
petty politics and situations is really regulated by the Law of karma to
which they claim to be entirely subject.

This is as I understand it. Dallas
