IMHO Dallas offers with reference to the SD and the KEY to THEOSOPHY:
1. HPB refers to 3 lines of evolution intertwining SD I 181.... The 2nd is
the "Intellectual."
2. HPB refers to the 3 (types, levels, kinds) of Manas (Mind) activity
KEY, pp. 136, 176, 90 118-122, (and many more definitions therein).
3. Consciousness observes the variances of every change in our
consciousness and assigns to them as "index" a fresh "aspect." It is only
in our memory that we recall the past and those "aspects." The living,
experiencing and choosing MANAS is always operative in the "Eternal Now."
4. Eternity and immortality are concepts which we create in terms of 1.
Memory and 2, Anticipation.
We live NOW, and as we say or think NOW, it is already passed into memory.
"We" are like the head of a comet, and we leave a trail of memories, which
the "head" recalls as desired, when it seeks to review where it has been
and what was experienced at that time.
Duration is an idea of timelessness. Time is an idea of limitation, as it
is assigned a beginning and an end. Our Universe, our Solar system, our
earth, ourselves are all limited in TIME -- or rather as "Aspects of Being
caught in the Events of a Time-passed."
But to enable us to perceive our memories, and the time of their existence
there must be "something" which is not subject to the limits of TIME. It
is for this reason that the idea of "immortality" is posited for the MONAD
(Atma-Buddhi) or "life-atom" which in man's mind is referred to, using
Theosophical terminology, as the "HIGHER SELF."
IMHO it is for this reason that HPB in the SD (Vol. I pp 14-18) presents
the ideas of the THREE FUNDAMENTALS. From those ultimates and metaphysical
concepts are developed the idea of unlimited progressive and educative
experiences broadly called "evolution." And in regard to us, as mind
beings endowed with "consciousness of self," we are provided with several
ideas:
1. There is an immortal EGO (MONAD) which is rooted in the immortality and
eternity of the ABSOLUTENESS. The "HIGHER SELF,' in other words is a "ray"
of THAT. (SD I 570-575).
2. A "ray" or "Reflection: of the MONAD lodges itself as human
intelligence, as your and my "mind" in every personality into which it
reincarnates -- (reincarnation being the process of education and
experience which is continuous--just as successive days in our lives or at
our school)--
Such education is not only the acquisition of knowledge, and developing
talents in its usage, but implies the deeper perception of the moral
quality. To define the "moral quality" of life and experience, the "golden
rule" is the criterion: treat others, high or low, near or far as
brothers, and offer assistance when needed.
"Good" is acting in harmony with the WHOLE. "(Obeying the laws of
nature)". "Bad" or "Evil" is a deliberate breaking of the Laws of
brotherhood and harmony. It is adopting the concept that we are
"isolated," and that we can "own" things, and, that we need to "protect our
ownership against any intrusion."
Whether these teachings are of the Yogacharyas or of the Prasangha
Madhyamikas, makes no difference, but, in fact both schools, seem to have
taught these. One must recall that the teachings as we now have them are
only the external rind of the inner and true concepts which some students
have attempted to pas on, using words, to their successors. Every
developing man-mind has to mull over these ideas and see if they fit the
great picture which he or she sees of the universe/world and its purposes,
and of his/her present existence.
The fact is that there is room for both independence and dependence in
fact and philosophy.
I hope these ideas are found to have some value Dallas
