I first became acquainted with the work of Rene Guenon when reading the
biography of the Russian Orthodox monk, Seraphim Rose, written by
Damascene Christensen.  According to Christensen, Guenon had a great
influence on the thought of Father Seraphim.

Guenon is described as a French metaphysician who died in Cairo in
1951.  He is viewed as a critic of modernity, as one who upheld
ancient tradition.  He believed that rejection of traditional spiritual
principles has led to the present state of degeneracy.  Guenon wrote
that since the beginning of Kali-Yuga "truths which formerly lay within
reach of all mankind have become more and more hidden and difficult to
approach; those who have access to them grow gradually fewer and
fewer."

His criticism of modernity is expressed in his book:  "The Reign of
Quantity and the Signs of the Times".

It is interesting to note that Mahatma Gandhi was also a critic of
modernity and an upholder of traditional values.
