Re: theos-talk Newsweek Going All Digital - Theosophical Publishers need to understand why?

In the case of periodicals sold on a circulation and making money, a pdf
file will kill the income stream. So you have conflicting situation. On the
other hand, with books, I doubt many of them make any profit at all. With
print on demand technology, books can be made available both as pdf as well
as print edition, thus meeting the needs of all segments of readership.

There is another issue we have to address. Some publications contain
several hundred pages and storage and transportation is difficult. I have
run into a book containing nearly 1,000 pages and a two volume collection
with nearly 1,000 pages each. Who wants to lug around such heavy books even
if the contents are priceless.

It makes no sense to continue with old-time business model when more
efficient one is available today. Some knowledgeable individuals may have
to launch an education campaign to enlighten decision makers understand
what is going on in the publishing world today and what changes in
direction is direly needed before the whole model collapses and creating a
great lost opportunity.

PS: I have seen personally how the movers and shakers have shunned
technology in furthering interests of theosophical organizations. Even ten
years ago when faxes and email were widely used, I found that the movers
and shakers have always resorted to snailmail in correspondence even when a
fax machine is sitting in their room or next room. Snailmail gives a lot
float to react; but they could have saved printing and mailing costs if fax
and email were used. Simple folks cannot understand the logic behind
situation!!!!
