Here is an account of Anagarika Dharmapala who was responsible for revival
of Buddhism in Ceylon and the West.

He started as a interpreter for Col Olcott when he travelled and lectured
in Sri Lanka. Olcott's contribution to Sri Lanka is well known. What is
significant is that in addition to managing the expansion of theosophical
society world-wide, he spend a lot of time in reviving Buddhism in Sri
Lanka. His relocation from NY to India was triggered by the well known
meeting he had with his Guru in NY. I have no doubt that he should have
received some information or even direction from his Guru on the need for
revival of Buddhism. When we look at the current emphasis on
intellectualism and yogic exercises in many parts of theosophical
organizations, one wonders if lack of emphasis on activities related to
improvement of conditions of common man and woman is the root cause of
shrinking of membership world-wide.
