A Continuing Story of Advancement in Human Thought and Way of Life

There is a âUniversally Ancient Wisdom Religionâ and this unfortunately got eclipsed in almost all the nations of the world. The key to this wisdom is not âlostâ altogether but is carefully guarded and protected from misuse and abuse. Those who are keen to know the âsecrets of natureâ were and are all time encouraged to pursue the path of knowledge, benefit themselves and others in the manifestation. The seat of the Teacher is never vacant but it has to be approached with humility and hesitancy. Because humility leads one to wisdom and having obtained the wisdom one is still humble. The wisest is always the most humble. The door to the wisdom was opened each time and certain portions of the hitherto hidden knowledge are revealed. In the end of the 19th century, in the beginning of the last quarter, a corner of the veil was lifted to Madame H P Blavatsky (1831-91) and she was instructed to fuse the knowledge of physical and psychic sciences with the spiritual sciences. This has become a historical necessity, and otherwise it was afraid that the humanity would get divided into two segments led by the scientific dogmatism and religious orthodoxy. She, with the consistent help of Col. H S Olcott (1832-1907) and several others initiated a new association of men and women of the world under the name and style of The Theosophical Society. Instructions on matters of spiritual impost, human conduct and ultimate, philosophy of Life and Consciousness started flowing from Madame Blavatsky and her spiritual teachers. This knowledge soon got widely spread over different nations and the organization very soon became an International entity, volumes of literature have flown in, very many subsidiary institutes and unions sprung up, and intellectual men and women of the world found their way to the higher faculties of Intuition and Intelligence. Madame Blavatskyâs effort was to show to the world that Space is the Eternal Parent for all the manifestation, Life is the undercurrent, it has its eternity and continuity along with matter, humanity has a definite role to play in the scheme of evolution of the worlds and that can be done only by engaging a âconstant eye to the ideal of human progression and perfection which the Secret science depictsâ.
The teaching named âtheosophyâ though available everywhere is now ârestatedâ couched in a language and idiom, radically and rationally sound, easily comprehended and viable for adaptation. The volumes of Madame Blavatsky were read by men of religion, philosophers, scientists, thinkers and all classes of intellectuals. She had, acknowledged and unacknowledged, followers in thought in all walks of life and literature. With the explosion of written word, the original work became somewhat eclipsed and very many presentations â too often described as parochial or misinterpreted â appeared. Though these add value to the human understanding, they cannot be the substitutes for the original work. An honest reader is all the time referred to the root or source literature. There would decidedly be much loss to oneâs creative understanding if the original texts are not perceived and comprehensively realized. For example, in certain countries theosophy is taken to be a scientific understanding while some others feel it is a philosophic restatement; where as it was pointed again and again by Blavatsky and her teachers that theosophy is an integrated understanding of Truth through a synthesized approach of science, religion and philosophy. It is intended to be continuously used to advance on right lines the humanity forward. Providing pointers for thought and discovery, Madame Blavatsky gave out very many ideas. To illustrate we can examine the matter of divisibility of atom. In Blavatsky's time the predominant view of the atom was that it was some sort of ultimate, indivisible billiard-ball. Blavatsky said in the Secret Doctrine, that this view was wrong, and that the atom was a composite of other particles and was "infinitely divisible" - which is obviously true as the number of sub-atomic particles seems only limited by the ability to detect them. She wrote:
"It is on the doctrine of the illusive nature of matter, and the infinite divisibility
of the atom, that the whole science of Occultism is built. It opens limitless
horizons to _substance_ informed by the divine breath of its soul in every possible state of tenuity, states still undreamt of by the most spiritually disposed chemists and physicists."(SD-I.p.520) In her time, the electron wasn't discovered yet, and she predicted that the source of "electricity" was such a sub-atomic particle, and probably in a
more metaphysical meaning, the life-atom, or whatever is the basic physical manifestation of the phenomenon that causes Life. She wrote:
"How do they know that those very bodies now called 'elementary atoms'
are not in their turn compound bodies or molecules, which, when analyzed with still greater minuteness, may show containing in themselves the -real,- primordial, elementary globules, the - gross- encasement of the still finer atom - spark - the spark of LIFE, the source of Electricity - MATTER still!" (BCW. IV. p 216)
Keeping these views in perspective, Prapti Bools of Chennai (Post Box no.5018;Chennai 600 020) have brought out a series of approach books on Theosophy, prepared by Dr N C Ramanujachary, a keen student and a scholar. The books under notice are:
Awakening to Truth,
In the Light of Magic,
Sources of our Existence,
Understanding Krishnamurti,
Words of Wisdom,
True Path of Theosophy and
Significant Factors in Theosophy.

They are not treatises on the original texts but are introductory notes aimed at inculcating the readers get in touch with the subject. The essays are packed with much information, not in current circulation, but essentially needed for appropriate appreciation.
