Yes

"can only be experienced"
Much can be taught to a willing student. However the human sentient being is a bridge between three realms. This physical realm of this now-ness, the conscious psychological realm which greets us all each morning and the sub-conscious realm which greets us when we enter trance, dream scape or sleep. There are areas within these realms which overlap but generally we exist in one or the other.

The great teaching is always to encourage the student to look deep inside them-self. With practice, patience and perseverance (through many lives) the student will arrive at self-awareness. Altruism occurs in the heart of the enlightened. Because, we come to know that we are all one and whole being. The welfare of our fellow creatures is the welfare of the universal self. The big self.

Altruism occurs naturally in the hearts and minds of the Goood.

Science have in the later years in the Western countries proven that more knowledge about psychology - can - ("can" is emphasized) help people become more compassionate and altruistic. In the Eastern countries this has been taught for centuries. Buddha was as I see it one of the eksponents of this doctrine. The end of suffering.

Not all flowers of visdom bloom at the same time. They need water, food and nursing as they say.

Thias happen due to Maya.

My guess is that most voluntary members of theosophical , philosophical, spiritual and mystical communities have similar doubts of themselves from time to time.
