Back in the 1990's I was a camera man shooting Ragamala Dance Performances which are most amazing to see. The performers are trained for many years from childhood. The finished product is a performer that can create dual contenance of male on one side and female on the other side and maintain it in complex intricate canon of motion , movements, expressions, eye movements, hand, foot , finger movements and many different ragapada rythm and cadence changes seamlessly all of which communicate by the symbolized movements the historical story told in the dance that is performed by the Dancer. The Japanese and Koreans also have their own version like the Japanese Kabuki Dances that are theatrical story's performed according to a codified canon that rigidly controls movements, facial, hand , body and foot movements. 
The young women that I have been favored to see were most excellent talent and precious to see, it is a most difficult extremely demanding art.

Basically it is part of the Bharata Natya and I believe it may have been
