ALUMNI IN NEW JERSEY TO HONOR COLONEL OLCOTT
Colonel Henry Steele Olcott Memorial ? 2-5 PM, September 10th, 2011
I am writing to you on behalf of an alumni group of a school in Sri Lanka founded by Colonel Henry Steele Olcott. Colonel Olcott, originally from New Jersey, was the founding member of the Theosophical Societies. In October 1875, Colonel Olcott was elected President of the newly established Theosophical Society, delivered his inaugural address at Mott Hall in New York City on November 17, a date therefore taken as the founding of the Theosophical Society.
In 1885, he and Madam Blavatsky formed the historic,Theosophical Society of Sri Lanka. Subsequently, this society established a number of schools in Sri Lanka. The foremost of them, Ananda College in Colombo,is the school referred to above. We are an alumni group of this College, based in New Jersey and have a number of members from the Tristate area.
We have made plans to commemorate this great American by installing a life-size statue of Colonel Olcott to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the establishment of Ananda College. The statue is to be installed on the grounds of a Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple in Franklin, Route 1 South, New Jersey. We think it is a fitting tribute to this illustrious member of the Theosophical Society for the tremendous services he rendered globally in the field of education and Buddhism.
Because Colonel Olcott was from Orange, New Jersey, we think it is very appropriate to install the statue and provide appropriate permanent documentation including large engraved granite plaque in central Jersey.
Four years ago, we organized the centennial death anniversary of Col. Olcott at the UMDNJ-RWJMS in New Brunswick, in which some of your members participated. We write to invite your organization to participate in this exciting venture of honoring Colonel Olcott. We are planning to have this opening and the ceremonial event on Saturday, from 2 to 5, 10th September, 2011.
As a member of the organizing committee, I will be the liaison person from this end with the Theosophical Societies about this project. We will be honored if you participate in the opening ceremony and the exciting celebrations on behalf of the Theosophical Society. Your suggestions are welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you,
