New Zealand Defence Force releases UFO documents

The Defence Force today released thousands of previously secret documents
on unidentified flying objects (UFOs) covering sightings by the military and private individuals, investigations, newspaper clippings and letters from people who claimed to have been in contact with alien craft.The 12 volumes date from 1952 to 2009 and were released under the Official Information Act 1982. Access to the original files, held by Archives New Zealand, is restricted until 2050 for personal privacy reasons.The documents released today have had personal details removed, as well as the names of service personnel and civilians involved in investigations.

	Mystery continues to shroud one of New Zealand's most famous UFO sightings.The Defence Force has released 60 years worth of files on UFO reports including one concerning the mystery lights observed during a commercial airline flight along the Kaikoura coastline in December 1978. The documents shed little new light on the event but include written statements from Air Force personnel. None identify what the mysterious
lights were although theories suggest they came from aircraft or helicopters. Other documents suggest the lights were from fishing vessels, or even that they were the planet Venus, all theories that have been canvassed before..
