Email accounts getting compromised

In the recent days, many of my friends have had their email accounts broken
in and the breaker steals all the email addresses and posts a msg to
everyone as if the owner is in financial difficulty in a major City overseas
and needs help and try to mislead the recipients to send money by western
union. The first indication is when you are unable to sign on to the
account, because the breaker has changed the password.

I ran into the problem of not being able to sign on to my gmail account and
suspected some one had broken into it. If such a situation arises for
anyone, the first thing to do is to request change of password. Usually, the
email service provider has a secondary email address for you and they send
you a link to reset the password and it can be done immediately and this
will prevent the breaker to access your account. I was able to reset the
password immediately and if there was a break-in, it has been taken care of
quickly.
