Hi Cass,

I was thinking about your above post on this last weekend. On Saturday my wife and I joined some Buddhist friends chanting the Heart Sutra. Then on Sunday I was in a Victorian country town for a conference. The small town has a Benedictine Abbey so at 5pm I joined the three monks & three nuns for sund Vespers & Benediction. It was there that I thought of you & your desire to make your study of religion only academic. Thomas Acquinas wrote tomes of theology that can be studied but unless one experiences the 'feeling' underlying his hymns that form this service one will never understand his religion. If there is divinity within a religion then it can never be found through the writings of its exponents. Tonight I am giving a talk at the melbourne lodge on Kashmir Shaivism which, as you probaly know is very, very close to Theosophy. One cannot really come close to it unless there is some experience of its impact on the lives of individual practioners - or at least so it seems to me. Perhaps we could discuss this some time face to face?

regards

Brian

I found out a great deal about Hinduism by joining in the morning puja at the Hindu shrine in Adyar or about Mahayana Buddhism at the Yun Ying Temple Narre Warren worship. It would be like trying to understand Theosophy without actually using Theo Voice of the Silence and HPB's Diagram of Meditation.

You may be interested to know as well, that inside the main hall of the Adyar headquarters are bas-reliefs of current and extinct religions.

I studied in Adyar in 1994/95 with Ravi Ravindra at the School of the Wisdom. I returned to Adyar again in December 2007 after completing my PhD, where unexpectedly, I got engaged to Sushma Sreenath, whom I first met in Adyar in 1995. Pedro Olivera conducted an engagement blessing for us in Adyar, at the Church of St Michael and All Angels.
