Yes.
Crystallized thought-patterns aught to be avoided. By thinking in other kinds of thought-patterns much can be accomplished. And by seeking out those experiences and actions, that PRIMARILY INTENDS to help the whole world to the highest degree, and not only ourselves, we can do much good and wiise.

We can say, that theosophical teachings among other issues differ from some cult-watching organizations, most religious and philosophical groups - and other more ordinary groups in that it doesn't label a group a cult simply because of its "theological" beliefs. Rather, groups should be judged by their behavior and the motives behind their behaviour. 

Only unselfish people will understand compassion and visdom. Even if some more or less selfish persons claim that they understand it, it will also be a fact that their views are not true or within any realm of reality.

First we will have to study hard and learn, and open our hearts . "Before the soul can stand in the presence of the Masters its feet must be washed in the blood of the heart"; (from the buteauful book: "Light on the Path") - Then the Master arrives.
It is also said, that the Master find you, when you are ready. It is not you who find the Master.
I am referring to the Master-Chela relationship mentioned by Blavatsky and others.
