Christina, If you have used that e-mail as contact e-mail on other web sites, then  you might lose control of those other online accounts of you.
That means you need to remember in which official and other communications you have provided your old yahoo address and change contact address at all places. Otherwise hacker will have control of your other accounts as well. 
Another thing you should do is contact yahoo and tell them that your yahoo address was hacked. Perhaps they will give control of old e-mail to you by allowing you to reset the password. Then you will be able to use your old address again.
