CONSTITUTION AND RULES OF THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
[The following paper on CONSTITUTION AND RULES OF THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY from 1890 needs a few words to go with here in the year 2009. The Theosophical Society was founded in november 1875 by H. P. Blavatsky, H. S. Olcott and a few others.
First. The below text was the last Constitutions and Rules OF THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY laid down before the Masters main AGENT H. P. Blavatsky died and her physical departure. In that sense the words are interesting.
Second. After H. P. Blavatsky's death the Theosophical Society (TS) never was the same. This is clear from most of the historical evidence left to us to read and contemplate. Before H. P. Blavatsky's death in 1891 there had been a lot of turmoil within the Society. It can with good reason be said to primarily have started with the socalled Coulomb-Affair. Mr. and Mrs. Coulomb - a very non-theosophical couple of servants at the TS Headquarters in Adyar, India - went against the TS and primarily H. P. Blavatsky and published false claims about Blavatsky being a fraud and falsifier of the Masters with the help of Christian Missionaries in their Magazine: "Christian College Magazine" in 1884. (Se for instance: "The Coulomb Case" - http://blavatskyarchives.com/coulombcase.htm). A few month later the scientific body the Society of Psychical Reasearch (S.P.R.), a present day sort of Parapsychological scientific group, send the young 29 year old R. Hodgson from London to examine the claims in India. He got a report (The later famous "The Hodgson Report") published in the beginning of 1885 with the official backing of the S. P. R., containing in it extremely negative claims about H. P. Blavatsky. The report has later been retracted or annulled by S. P. R. and it was and is obvoius, that it was filled with errors and undocumented claims. (Se for instance: "An Examination of the Hodgson Report of 1885" by late S. P. R. member Vernon G. W. Harrision. - http://www.theosociety.org/pasadena/hpb-spr/hpbspr-h.htm) But these events had the consequence, that a great number of members turned against H. P. Blavatsky and considered her a fraud. H. P. Blavatsky left India, so to avoid being put before the judge in a trail accused of being a Russian-Spy and a fraud of phenomenon, forseeing a likely result and outcome of damaging the Theosophical Society's cause if she confronted it all in a public and heavily biased trial.
The Theosophical Society was at that time a Society, which disallowed certain persons membership when their ethical behaviour were not within certain limits - and its magazine was promoting the theosophical cause as it was given mainly by H. P. Blavatsky and in part H. S. Olcott. A split almost occurred because H. S. Olcott started to mistrust Blavatsky. He had tendencies of following brewing camp withi the TS, which wanted more secrecy about the teachings. A camp supported by for instance the prominent and learned member the esoteric Vedantist Subba T. Row and others. - In august 1888 H. S. Olcott got a letter from one of the Master onboard the ship S.S. Shannon A/S giving him some important info about his mistreatment of H. P. Blavatsky activities.(See Blavatsky Collected Writings volume 10, Page 134) That changed a lot of things. The Theosophical Society was changed into a Society primarily concerned with compartive studies. And since it had followed such a teaching for the last three years, not much new happened. But, the letter from the Master led to the creation of The Esoteric Section in october 1888, with H. P. Blavatsky as its leader. (THE ESOTERIC SECTION OF THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY -http://www.katinkahesselink.net/blavatsky/articles/v10/y1888_082.htm ) The Esoteric Section was a group with the purpose of offering the Seekers of theosophical teaching to learn even more than they could within The Theosophical Society, and that under guidance of H. P. Blavatsky, a official agent of the Master. The Esoteric Section was to be totally indedependent of The Theosophical Society so to keep The Theosophical Society the inter-religiøs atmosphere of comparative studying alive within its activities.
Interestingly it seems that H. P. Blavatsky admitted at least in part some guilt with regard to the whole spectrum of the above events. The guilt was, that was she being responsible for revealing to much about the existence of the Masters and thereby resulting in their names being dragged through the mud of the daily press and S. P. R., and She refers to these issues in her book "The Key to Theosophy" from 1889/1890. - http://www.phx-ult-lodge.org/aKEY.htm
Third. After H. P. Blavatsky's death, the Esoteric Section was not the same. The Theosophical Society was sought to be sort of "melted" together with the Esoteric Section, because Annie Besant was later in 1907 leader of both groups. Each leader of a Theosophical group was now also truned into a member of the Esoteric Section. This lead later to the emotional cult with the alleged Messiah named J. Krishnamurti, known as a World Teacher. J. Krishnamurti was calimed to have been singlehandely discovered in 1909 by C. W. Leadbeater a prominent author and lecturer within the Theosophical Society, who only thre years earlier in may 1906 was thrown out of the Theosophical Society by H. S. Olcott. The German Section of the Theosophical Society broke with the Theosophical Society and its lead named Rudolf Steiner (d. 1924) created a new group named Anthroposophy, because he distanced himself from the J. Krishnamurti cult. Annie Besant required that each member of the Theosophical Society should also be a member of the Messiah cult named The Order of the Star in the East, which lead by J. Krishnamurti himself. (Se for instance: "Krishnamurti" http://www.alpheus.org/html/contentindices/krishnamurti_index.html . And also: "Revelation or Realization: The Conflict in Theosophy", by J.J. van der Leeuw http://www.alpheus.org/html/source_materials/krishnamurti/leeuw.html ) Today, we have a Theosophical Society, which are not understanding that it has deviated, and which condones the deviation from the teachings given by H. P. Blavatsky about Universal Brotherhood and comparative study, seeking to promote the reliance of the Divine within each human. Later of-shoot have referred to this. One of the being various groups from the W. Q. Judge branche, which sprang from a huge disagreement between W. Q. Judge and Annie Besant about ethics. - Today the most prospering off-shoot of the original Theosophical Society is the Alice A. Bailey groups. Yet, their problem is of another kind, and have been touched upon in article by me elsewhere. One of them is: "Are the books by Alice A. Bailey dangerous?" by M. Sufilight
