Who and where was HPB's "torch-bearer of Truth?"

Dear Daniel,

I'm not contesting that there are some discrepancies between HPB and AB concerning the metaphysical status of Maitreya, but ... at the same time HPB stated in "The Key to Theosophy" the following, which Besant thought to be applicable to the WT Project, with which I concur:

"If the present attempt, in the form of our Society, succeeds better than its predecessors have done, then it will be in existence as an organized, living and healthy body when the time comes for the effort of the XXth century. The general condition of men's minds and hearts will have been improved and purified by the spread of its teachings, and, as I have said, their prejudices and dogmatic illusions will have been, to some extent at least, removed. Not only so, but besides a large and accessible literature ready to men's hands, the next impulse will find a numerous and united body of people ready to welcome the new TORCH-BEARER OF TRUTH. He will find the minds of men prepared for his message, a language ready for him in which to clothe the new truths he brings, an organization awaiting his arrival, which will remove the merely mechanical, material obstacles and difficulties from his path. Think how much one, to whom such an opportunity is given, could accomplish. Measure it by comparison with what the Theosophical Society actually has achieved in the last fourteen years, with out any of these advantages and surrounded by hosts of hindrances which would not hamper THE NEW LEADER. Consider all this, and then tell me whether I am too sanguine when I say that if the Theosophical Society survives and lives true to its mission, to its original impulses through the next hundred years--tell me, I say, if I go too far in asserting that earth will be a heaven in the twenty-first century in comparison with what it is now!" (CAPS ADDED)

Either 1) something went wrong in the TS that it could not welcome its new leader around 1975, or 2) the project was moved foreward with K and he succeeded, or 3) the project was indeed moved foreward with K, but both K and the TS failed, which 4) did not hamper the Master's XXth century effort to work through another person or group around 1975.

Sometime ago on Theos-Talk, Murty gave some helpful extracts from
H.P. Blavatsky's writings showing her teaching on the Maitreya.

  See:

  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theos-talk/message/45557

Theosophical students might want to compare and contrast what HPB
wrote with what, for example, Annie Besant said as follows in 1925:

"And now I have to give you, by command of the King, His message,
and some of the messages of the Lord Maitreya and His great
Brothers. . . what I am saying, as to matter of announcement, is
definitely at the command of the King whom I serve.

His taking possession of His chosen vehicle . . . will be SOON.
Then He will choose, AS BEFORE, HIS TWELVE APOSTLES. . . and their
chief, the Lord Himself. He has already chosen them, but I have only
the command to mention seven who have reached the stage of Arhatship,
  Who were the 'Arhats'?

The first two, my brother Charles Leadbeater and myself, . . . C.
  Jinarajadasa, . . . George Arundale, Oscar Kollerstrom, . . . Rukmini
  Arundale....

I left out one and must leave out another. Naturally, our
Krishnaji [Jiddu Krishnamurti] was one, but he is to be the vehicle
of the Lord. And the other is one who is very dear to all of us, as
to the whole Brotherhood: Bishop James Wedgwood. He had borne his
crucifixion before the seal of Arhatship was set upon him by his King.
Those are the first seven of the twelve whom He has chosen, with
Himself as the thirteenth. 'Ye call me Master and Lord, and ye do
  well, for so I am.'

Now the wonder may come into your mind: H.P.B. was the only one
who was really announced as the messenger of the Master. Since then
the world has grown a good deal, and it is possible that while the
few may be repelled, many thousands will be attracted to THE
CHRIST. . . . Whatever the effect, SINCE HE HAS SAID IT, it is
  done. . ."

The Theosophist, November, 1925. CAPS ADDED.

Now please compare and contrast Mrs. Besant's statement with what HPB
wrote in 1889 about a certain Pseudo-Theosophical group:

  ". . . A new and rapidly growing danger. . . is threatening . . . the
spread of the PURE Esoteric Philosophy and knowledge. . . . I allude
to those charlatanesque imitations of Occultism and Theosophy. . . . "

"By pandering to the prejudices of people, and especially by adopting
the FALSE ideas of a personal God and a PERSONAL, CARNALIZED Saviour,
as the groundwork of their teaching, the leaders of this 'swindle'
(for such it is) are endeavoring to draw men to them and in
particular TO TURN THEOSOPHISTS FROM THE TRUE PATH."

  ". . . A close examination will assuredly reveal. . . materials
  largely stolen . . . from Theosophical writings. . . [and] DISTORTED
and falsified so as to be palmed off on the unwary as revelations of
new and undreamed of truths. But many will neither have the time nor
the opportunity for such a thorough investigation; and before they
become aware of the IMPOSTURE they may be led far from the Truth."

". . . Nothing is more dangerous to Esoteric Truth than the GARBLED
AND DISTORTED versions disfigured to suit the prejudices and tastes
  of men in general."

Quoted from Blavatsky's E.S. Instruction No. I., 1889. CAPS ADDED.
These extracts are omitted from the version of Instruction No. I as
found in HPB's COLLECTED WRITINGS, Volume 12.
